As a full time busker - i confirm that YOU CAN live of busking but IT IS NOT a easy job.
You need to invest in equipment, your voice/instrument/performance and practice / inovate too keep it fresh. You need to withstand all weather conditions, have plan, have big repertoire and be creative. Sometimes you busk for hours without toilet. Sometimes you get harrased by some bum.
And yes, there is always a guy on some corner who plays one song (wonderwall / knocking on the heavens door etc..) , who is dirty and smells bad and can really put bad reputation on us, buskers. Then there are alcoholics, drug users etc. that use "busking" as a cover for begging.
But, on the other side , there are wonderful , talented colleagues - musicians/performers and there are some wonderful people ready to support your passion and love. Fortunately , majority of people like buskers , not many people think we are beggars or homeless BUT only when you put yourself 100% , when you have good manners, when you are clean, polite, when you smile and make other people smile.
It is not easy. It is not steady income. For some , it is even not a real job !
For me - it is the only way of life, my dream , my passion. If someone told me a decade ago how hard busking can be , i woud never go this way but with such love that i feel for (in my case) music, everything is easy.
    Thank you for this video.

Busking is a job your being paid for your talent, some people are so backward and miserable that they have a backward stereotype of people who are brightening our town centres city's seafronts etc great video.

Your videos are so inspiring! I'm a full time busker and yes, even with a permit restaurants and cops can be annoying. What keeps me doing it is the kind people who supports my work and the fact that every day I'm becoming a better musician and a confident human being. Also love, all the unique/crazy stories that are happening to me that I've decided to write a book about it.
My best wishes for you in your music career.

Nice list. :) I’m a full time busker. Busking is my only job. It’s tough. But the amount of positive feedback I get from all the ppl I touch keeps me going. Living in a city, music is needed. Music that is not centralized, and governed. When everything was shut down two years ago, and I was busking in NY, at least 10 ppl a day would tell me how my music is saving their sanity.
Don’t ever underestimate the power a live performer has. Especially a good one, placed in the right place at the right time. It could save someone’s life. Haha. ;)

I,m 68 years old and Retired. I worked for 30 years and I just like to play and sing. I do not care if I make any money. In fact if I do make money I would give it to The Fire Department. Cause they have my life more times than I can remember.

Singing in front of people, on the street requires a ton of courage! I definitely look differently at buskers now.

Great video as usual! The most common question I get when I'm busking (at least in Switzerland) is: you can't possibly make a living from this, can you? haha

    • @philpants44

I've never been busking, I've always fancied trying it and probably will when I have a few more songs ready. I play in a gigging band and work full time. It amazes me people only think we do it to try and make a living. I wanna try it for the experience and for the chance to brighten people's day.

I guess sometimes people wave their bills to the buskers, because they want to tip but not the whole amount. When they take some change from the guitarcase they dont want to be accused of stealing.

I'd have to say busking is far from begging if someone doesn't realize the performers instruments they acquired at quite an expense to entertain people. Some buskers have just one instrument and play it well...others have multiple effects and play multiple instruments. Some use pricey instruments,(clearly not a beggar)...and some use cheap instruments to show it can still be done...as a busking street performer.
If all the leaders of the world were subjected to busking as a requirement to run for office to sing and play music with each other like say...an orchestra...that would open better accord and negotiations and trust by the people who voted for all parties, because of the 'team focus' that musicianship involves to get down!

Busking is NOT begging or panhandling ......it is performing an entertaining service and if you want to support a busker you can or just walk by if you dont . Homeless panhandlers peform no service because they are lazy and entitled people who expect free money from total strangers while they provide no service . Fact is they often have drug habits and this is often the reason they are homeless in the first place ......i never give them a dime because in most cases they deminish the quality of life for many people. I will always drop a fiver in a buskers tip jar though because they enhance the quality of everyday life.
