This song reminds me to power up and red flavor, maybe because of the sounds of a videogame and the harmonizations. It's an amazing song, i loved it since i first listened to it.
Again and again when you listen to this title track you find the layers: vocals, bass, and the most important part, the guitar. The drum is standing outside these layers, making you easily neglect others. This is totally a K-pop rock song, rv nailed it throughout the whole kpop world!
But DID you like Zimzalabim? Did you ever end up liking Zimzalabim? (No really, I can't remember.... I've watched probably all of your RV reactions but it's been a while...) It definitely seems to be having a Zimzalabim like effect on some people where it is somewhat divisive. I predict you will LOVE bsides on this track. Birthday is not my #1 song on the album, but my number 1 to 5 difference is veryvery tiny and I put Birthday #4. The prechorus is LUSH (as you noted, your favorite part!) into the cool percussion build into the chorus. The chorus is where things sound more experimental, and that's where it tends to lose people who are not expecting that direction for a chorus. I think that is the part that's throwing people off the most because they are not expecting the experimental sounds to take place at that place in the song - it's not giving what they want to hear/expect to hear in a chorus. People also expect to hear a lush bridge from Red Velvet when the song is uptempo/quirky (ala Zimzalabim) - instead we get a badass guitar dance break bridge with animation fight scene. When I listen to it and hear all the vocal harmonies EVERYWHERE and the chorus added elements each time (last chorus fave!) - it's hard not to love this song. I get that not every song is for everybody, but I will explain exactly why I love it so much for anyone on the fence! :D First of all - the sample. The sample is SO COOL - I don't even think it's a literal sample, I could be wrong but I think they recreated a motive from Rhapsody in Blue with the sounds that the brass uses at times during the piece but I don't think the brass actually play that motive with that sound? I may be misremembering, I tried to find it after watching the video and thinking this, but I didn't catch it. The sample is integrated so seamlessly, but more of a background element than the foreground sampling of Feel My Rhythm - where it is literally the lifeblood of the entire song. Next - alllll the references. The references are extra cool because they vary in how they're done, like is it a moment, a line, a title.... Favorite vocal performance moments if you decide to ever give it another chance to win you over (Not even gonna talk about the prechorus because it's killer every time and you're already sold hahaha): 47 seconds into the original MV, octave jumps for "Dumb-dumb" line (song reference) into the Diamonds bit (those harmonies diiaaamooooonds - Diamond also being a reference to the Aseul song title) 52 seconds in we get Yeri's RAP - she keeps leveling up. around 2min in - the second verse - you noticed Joy's brilliant octave jump, but blew right past one of my favorite moments right after that, Wendy's descending run when she says the corners of her mouth go UP - wowwwwwww it's one of the most gorgeous lines I've heard. We've not got ad libs (a lot of Seulgi here!) going from prechorus into the chorus and they are gorgeous - Then it's the bridge/dance break - Baaaaaaaaam yeah yeah - WHEW I love this part. The guitar sounds start getting more forefront instead of back in the mix and it gets super badass. And the harmonies for the vocal parts in this section are ridiculous - they are instrumental, backing vocal style, and they are stunning. Then in the final chorus we have Wendy's countermelodic line! And then on Icy Icy you have to listen to the added harmony that goes up on each "icy"!

I love Red Velvet so much. They are my favourite girlgroup however I must agree. I think they grew out of the lovely bubbly concepts. It was okay when they were still rookies but I wish SM would give them some darker and stronger concepts where they can blow away the audience. I mean we know that each member has the potential to do so and they really deserve it. If I was SM I’d give them better songs.
If SM did that they'd be like any other girl group in K-Pop the thing that makes Red Velvet great is they change it up and they have amazing vocals on top of that.
I don't think they've grown out of it necessarily... I think it's been a while since we've seen a true Red bubblegum concept. Maybe power up? Umpah Umpah was bubbly but in an adult way. And this is the poppy, weird and edgy if you squint concepts that made them popular in their early years. I.e. Russian roulette, Rookie and Ice Cream Cake.
It's a combination of queendom and fmr in my opinion, I enjoyed bsides a lot which is always the case for me, nevertheless, Im proud that RV always serve something new to the table after all these years and I hope they stay unpredictable
I find it surprising that reactors who are very in sync with KPOP are very meh about the song for the most part. Those who do not have much experience with KPOP seem to think its amazing right out of the starting gate. I was not sure what to think about it myself at first. When I was driving home today guess what song I was humming! After hearing it a good number of times I do find I am liking it more. Plus I had to start listening to the MV with my eyes closed as I tended to go deaf everytime I saw Wendy!!!!!

Given that it is a kitsch concept by RV, the comments and first impressions are understandable. But RV made it that way to make it aesthetically weird, that only a few can catch why it is so messy but at the same time beautifully made. Red Velvet will always be a genius and Queens of concept for me in the Kpop Industry. There's just something new and fresh and authentic that you kind of not expect in RV's concept and will still surprise you. Love you always cake girls! 🤍🤍

This was very weird on the 1st listen, but after a few listens I can't get it out of my head. Try giving it a few more listens and it will be stuck in your head 😂
I think they tried to split the difference with the MV having a darker tone and the song is bubbly and bright, to try to contrast with Seulgi's solo which was just last month. I think Sm really did not want anyone to compare the RV comeback to the Seulo and instead of giving the girls the darker/mature concepts that fans are used to, instead highlighted the bubbly Red side. I do not think there is a problem with RV having a bright and bubbly concept (bubbly leans towards Joy's aesthetic and styling the most), however, the song is formed in a much more simplistic almost BlackPink-esque way. Where BP pulls these kinds of songs off (usually, I strongly disliked Pink Venom and Shutdown) with strong rap verses to push the hip-hop/kpop fusion BP aims for, RV has average to poor raps usually and the song just cannot make that fusion happen. Especially against Wildside and FMR this song seems simplistic and very bubblegum without a whole lot of depth. I like the song, for the record, and it is one of my favorites on this album (I do not like two songs on this album which is a first for me with RV). Reveluvs and general fans of RV have very high expectations, and this song just does not live up to them, that is okay some comebacks will not hit as hard. It is not as safe as Queendom (my least fav Title Track) but it is very simple compared to the rest of their 2022 comebacks. If I were to have changed anything I would have swung this song more towards the Alt-Rock vibe that we get during the pseudo-bridge (also there is no BRIDGE IN THIS SM SONG ?!?), and pushed towards that vibe more. Introduce more guitar, more of the heavy drum beat, I honestly thing the prechorus is the strongest part, the chorus is the weakest, and the verses are missing something. I also think using Rhapsody in Blue for this was a waste. FMR is the epitome of what a classical sampling should be like and to not live up to that is a real shame. I may just be too much of a Gershwin fan though, because I either wanted them to do much more with or not use it.
Why I stan RV? Cuz always surprised me. I likes Zimzalabim at first listen same with Dumb Dumb so this one ITS a yess for me, the thing Is ppl who know RV for Psychoor Bad Voy aré always expecting Velvet side, and Velvet side Is always on the bsides, anyway I respect everyone opinion but neve expect 2.0 version of any RV song. To be honest. I wasn’t that impressed first listen myself… after second one though it’s definitely on repeat the past few days now along with the rest of the album. Wished there were more songs but I’m very happy to be hearing more music from red velvet again. this album is different even tho some would compare to previous albums but I think it’s not completely same concept as old ones. Either way. Only love love love for red velvet and thanks for sharing your reaction to this new song. I really hope you give it a second chance.

This was very weird on the 1st listen, but after a few listens I can't get it out of my head. Try giving it a few more listens and it will be stuck in your head 😂

I think they tried to split the difference with the MV having a darker tone and the song is bubbly and bright, to try to contrast with Seulgi's solo which was just last month. I think Sm really did not want anyone to compare the RV comeback to the Seulo and instead of giving the girls the darker/mature concepts that fans are used to, instead highlighted the bubbly Red side.
I do not think there is a problem with RV having a bright and bubbly concept (bubbly leans towards Joy's aesthetic and styling the most), however, the song is formed in a much more simplistic almost BlackPink-esque way. Where BP pulls these kinds of songs off (usually, I strongly disliked Pink Venom and Shutdown) with strong rap verses to push the hip-hop/kpop fusion BP aims for, RV has average to poor raps usually and the song just cannot make that fusion happen. Especially against Wildside and FMR this song seems simplistic and very bubblegum without a whole lot of depth. I like the song, for the record, and it is one of my favorites on this album (I do not like two songs on this album which is a first for me with RV). Reveluvs and general fans of RV have very high expectations, and this song just does not live up to them, that is okay some comebacks will not hit as hard. It is not as safe as Queendom (my least fav Title Track) but it is very simple compared to the rest of their 2022 comebacks.
If I were to have changed anything I would have swung this song more towards the Alt-Rock vibe that we get during the pseudo-bridge (also there is no BRIDGE IN THIS SM SONG ?!?), and pushed towards that vibe more. Introduce more guitar, more of the heavy drum beat, I honestly thing the prechorus is the strongest part, the chorus is the weakest, and the verses are missing something. I also think using Rhapsody in Blue for this was a waste. FMR is the epitome of what a classical sampling should be like and to not live up to that is a real shame. I may just be too much of a Gershwin fan though, because I either wanted them to do much more with or not use it.
Why I stan RV? Cuz always surprised me. I likes Zimzalabim at first listen same with Dumb Dumb so this one ITS a yess for me, the thing Is ppl who know RV for Psychoor Bad Voy aré always expecting Velvet side, and Velvet side Is always on the bsides, anyway I respect everyone opinion but neve expect 2.0 version of any RV song. The álbum Is like always no skip one.
