Totally agree. As a user of djay Pro (coming from Serato), the software is "almost" there, they just need to focus on the priorities of DJs and not the marketing/PR department. 1. Library Management 2. Hardware Compatibility. I know so many DJs who would switch today, if they got those two things right.

Love DJAY. Use it on my own Mixon 8 pro and a Mixtour. Plan to get the new Mixtour pro later this year. If you have the Mixtour you can plug into ANY club equipment as a backup or main like laidback Luke does, using your laptop, pad or phone.

TL:DR djay is very easy custom midi mappable, the lack of audio drivers on iOS for proprietary sound-cards inside most controllers and mixers is the problem.
The challenge Algoriddim faces isn't about "midi mapping" or "HID control"; it's primarily centered around audio drivers.
Certain controllers are deemed "class compliant," meaning they function without the need for additional software to manage audio input/output. These controllers will have audio from djay iOS out of the box, and may require some form of midi-mapping to make the control surfaces work.
Conversely, some controllers and mixers (such as the Pioneer DJM series and many older controllers) necessitate specific audio drivers for sound functionality on a given Operating System (Mac/Windows). Once that audio driver software is installed that gear become class compliant (simplified version).
One might argue that this is Algoriddim's dilemma, but in reality, it falls within the realm of the gear manufacturer's responsibility to ensure seamless integration with the OS and the device at that technical level.
For DJ software operating on macOS/Windows, once the hardware manufacturer releases the audio driver for the OS, the device essentially becomes "class compliant". And any DJ software can access it.
However, crafting proprietary hardware drivers for iOS, the operating system utilized by iPhones and iPads, presents considerable challenges due to Apple's ecosystem design. Economically, it's also impractical for manufacturers to develop drivers for older gear to function on iOS.
This is where the discrepancy between macOS and iOS djay comes from. djay macOS relies on the gear's audio drivers, those drivers are not available on iOS.
In the foreseeable future, more equipment will transition to being Class Compliant, facilitating compatibility with djay on iOS. Until then, the situation remains as it is and isn't solely Algoriddim's responsibility.
All of the above also applies to a certain extent when it comes to utilizing displays on a controller, but that also involves iOS/USB bandwidth restrictions.
On a side note, I recently hosted an AMA livestream on djay 5, and another one is in the works soon.

That is never nearly as good as when the mapping is done by the company behind the software
So it's nice for re-mapping a few things based on the official mapping
It's generally not good for adding support a brand new controller, that on top of MIDI may have HID integration and specific screens

    • @MixMasterG
      @MixMasterG 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@klausmogensen8691 true, HID mapping by software is preferred, but that's not the point of my comment.

First time I found a common sense well documented comment on this topic. Djs need to start knowing their tools more deeper instead crying for “impossible solutions”. Serato also needs to step up its game but until Apple opens fully DriverKit to allow these things over iPad we are all doomed. Maybe Apple keeps merging technologies and we reach that point but meanwhile Djay is the best djing mobile app possible followed by DjPlayer. Period.
The same issues people are experiencing from Serato has been experienced by iOS based djs over years (and DjPlayer has dvs support since first iPad version… iPad 1st gen!) but Serato users are laggards not early adopters and in the meantime we will see what happens with the dj landscape itself. Apple has the key and also are in the leading technologies such stems but djing is just a niche market against things like vision pro spatial computing… etc.
In the end to mix A>B any available djing app can handle that and for everything else there’s not real adoption justifying the investment (NI stems I’m looking to you…) so stop ranting people, stop asking for no-sense without knowledge and start studying your tools and pro/cons before “making open letters” and with the knowledge then help others to understand (or craft your own tools)

100% true. I have been using Djay Pro for 6 years plus. They deserve to be the world number one Djay software, however, their failure to mini map more hardware mixers and controllers especially pioneer hardware is seriously impacting their true potential. They also need to have their own cloud syncing rather than depending on Apple iCloud to sync cue point etc.

The way the Vision Pro version displays a mixer and turntables makes me wonder if Algoriddim is looking more toward a DJ hardware-less future, or maybe will start coming out with hardware of their own (perhaps built by someone like Reloop at first, but to Algoriddim’s specifications). That would set them apart from VDJ and others who try to be compatible with everything, and AlphaTheta who primarily build for Serato and Rekordbox, and InMusic who build for their Engine and Serato.

That’s an interesting point, but if I’m being honest, I think it had more to do with getting in Apple’s good graces, and maybe getting Apple Music support for the rest of the apps, you know what I mean? It’s a cool demo, but how many DJs would perform with a Vision Pro strapped to their face? Most DJs I know feel bad having a computer on the stage!

I have mixon8 and mixtour to use with it. I did buy the Buddy recently. I think I’m covered lol.
Mixtour Pro is on order. I’ve bought in to the ecosystem. Using iPad, iPhone and laptop is amazing.
My issues are 1) you can’t power and use a notation grid midi controller alongside a reloop controller if you use an iPad or iPhone. It just won’t work to control internal features like loops which is how I want to use it. It’s fine with a laptop with extra USB ports - but then you lose touchscreen and smaller form factor options.
I also think they could improve library management between devices - it’s a bit confusing and not that intuitive.
But the features outweigh the negatives so far. I think it’s amazing and supporting it and using it.

  • @modishmark
    @modishmark 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Nailed it! Those new beatgrids and stems are incredible but, I mainly use a Rane Four, not supported.
How do you rate the library/crate management? I feel that needs serious improvement too. Serato is so quick and simple in comparison but I would not be happy having to make my crates etc in Serato just to push them to DJay.
With more support and improvement library management it’s a no brainer for open format DJs.
Hopefully things the sort of video that might push them to make those advances we all want.
Great video as always, thanks for addressing this one!

Cleveland... 100% agree with you! I own lot's of controllers and it's just not compatible with all of them. I'm also a Serato user (since it's inception). It works with some of my setups but not my Pioneer DDJ-REV5. I went ahead and took an afternoon to map the REV5 and it works pretty well. Jog wheels work perfectly too. But it took a long time for me to map it. If I can do it, then why don't they map it??? I'm sure they could have mapped the REV5 in an hour. Why not map all controllers?? I would love to show up to my gigs with an IPAD pro instead of a laptop. But there's another HUGE issue for us wedding DJ's and this has been a complaint for YEARS! There is no way to edit the ID tags in the software. So when I go to prep for a wedding, I can't change the "comment" section in the crate for each song. I usually put something like "first dance", "grand entrance" etc in the comments section for the important songs. This is a complete dealbreaker for me. Wish they would change this but they say that they might do it someday??? They never said that they couldn't do it. It's just not priority to them. So for me... Algoriddim is a great backup but not ready for primetime! PS: Once you Map a controller, it's easy to transfer the mapping to your other IOS devices. So I sent it to my iPhone as a backup too.

A couple of things to pick up on. Mobile / iOS incompatibility is normally due to the hardware manufacturers. Class compliant controllers will work. Controllers that aren't class compliant which need drivers won't work with any DJ software on any iOS device because iOS has no concept of loading drivers. The fault is with the hardware manufacturers for not making class compliant controllers which need extra drivers, nothing any software company can do to make those controllers work with iOS.
Petition the hardware companies to make only class compliant hardware (or if we insist on only buying hardware that is they'll get the message).
The other thing is Apple Music can now be used with DJay but you can't use the stems (neural mix) function on any streamed music. The music industry prevents Apple Music (or Tidal etc) from allowing that. Essentially they're afraid of people stealing parts of their artist's songs to make other songs. Again petition the music industry about this issue, that isn't the fault of the DJ software companies.

  • @SteveF69

Couldn’t agree with you more CT…I attempted to move over completely to Djay Pro last year but end up returning to serato. I have a rane one which is compatible but the execution was less than stellar…certain functions didn’t work as they should and the scratching produced a pitch jump.
I think Djay’s focus is software and being able to dj without a controller which is why I believe there isnt as much support for multiple controllers. This is also why I believe they focused on creating compatibility with the Vision Pro instead of more controllers (+ Apple is a beast so probably something going on here with a possible acquisition ?)
The software is dope and I’m also a big fan so I hope this changes.
BTW, love the “synergy” between your talking points and making the food…dope video

@clevelandterry one thing you didn't mention that is holding me back is the lack of hardware unlock. Algoriddim seems to have taken the opposite approach to other DJ software companies by saying, if you have DJ controllers and or pro hardware, that's when you have to pay for a subscription. Personally, I think this is a likely reason for the lack of adoption. Most DJs that have mid to upper tier gear are used to their hardware unlocking Serato. They'd probably be more inclined to give DJay PRO a go if it did the same.

The DDJ1000 works with mobile. The audio does not work. So you need to use an external sound card. The mobile device version cannot support Audio on any hardware that isn't core audio compliant. It's a limitation of iOS/iPadOS. But if you are willing to use an external sound device, any midi mappable controller can control the software, and many are low key mapped. I think you know I've been a DJay fan for a bit, but hardware has always been tough, especially on iOS. PS, I will reach out to a friend to see if you can speak to someone fro Algoriddim.

Not being able to edit titles, not being able to edit ID3 tag? This is the most basic of any software that has to deal with MP3s. I'm currently running the trial on PC With my DDJ SZ2 and it runs great, and it sounds great. But without being able to edit titles on the fly, this is not for me. I thought DDJ 1000 was it but then I realized I could not use it with a phone... Then I thought Denon Sc live 4 could be it but it was not supported...😭 Thanks for sharing this plead! I fully stand behind it!
Also! for me to fully fully be onboard I would need Soundswitch integration. Then it would be unbeatable for mobile events.

Agreed! I’ve used VDJ and Serarto and am now trying to make the jump to DJAY and it won’t or can’t work with my RANE FOUR! If there is any way for them to make this happen I’d be all in. I think the software is amazing but the compatibility is hit or miss with certain controllers.

Your take is correct, and I would further argue this is a problem for the average user for sure. And the cause is Serato’s business model.
The way I see it, Serato’s business model is just like Microsoft’s with Windows in the 90s. I wanted to use MacOS or Linux, but always had to go back to Windows because of the device support. Everyone had one random scanner or printer or audio card that the maker just didn’t bother to support on anything but Windows, and without any inside info, it was impossible to write a driver from scratch.
I suspect Algoriddim is in the same spot.
See, I don’t use a ton of devices, but I love my Rane One. And it works beautifully with DJay Pro, just as good as Serato. And if that was all I was ever going to use, I would be good.
But like many DJs, I eventually wanted to move up a bit, so I got a Rane Seventy-Two. This works wonderfully with Serato, but ONLY with Serato. Sure, you can technically mix with DJay Pro on a 72, but you’re quickly going to realize that half the device is wasted space, because (1) most pad modes don’t work because you have to hold shift, so you can only use 5 modes, (2) you can’t use the waveform view, (3) you can’t use the song browser view, (4) the DJay Pro effects don’t work!
Talk about buyer’s remorse. Turns out the Seventy works MUCH better with DJay Pro, which wasn’t clear to me before my purchase. For the average customer, you’re going to end up pretty grumpy with Algoriddim. And that’s the problem. Sooner or later, it will bite most people.
So yeah, I agree 100%, I feel you. I suspect there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes effort between Serato and companies like Rane, and it’s a pity. Especially for Rane, who in my opinion is not paying attention to which way the wind is blowing.

DJAY PRO was my first DJ program. I chose it primarily because of Spotify integration, and it ran on my windows laptop. Sadly, the mapping for my controller was messed up. And there was no way to fix it. I still used it for a few events, but had to remember to manually change the program on the laptop instead of the controller. But then they walked away from Windows and might as well have been mac only. So I've moved on and become spoiled by the custom mapping capabilities of TRAKTOR and Virtual DJ.
I haven't looked at the software since, and am not inclined to do so as I'm not a mac-centric DJ; but I am very happy to see them succeeding. They are pushing the envelope for what can/should be in software and a rising tide lifts all boats (and all that).
Actually, I have used it recently, for a wedding cocktail hour. I loaded it on my Android phone and it was fine. Not awesome, but fine. But that was the previous version and I expect current is better.
So good luck Algoriddim! I wish you well, and I wish you success on your path from what you were to your vision of who you want to be.

Agree but do note -- DJay on mobile only works on class complaint hardware. Sadly, many manufactuers have gone to proprietary hardware drivers so that leaves Djay in a tough position. I use XDJ-XZ exclusively, and CDJs at nightclubs, but am struggling to switch to DJAY even though tjhe software is lightyears beyond Rekordbox (and Serato). Until they get better hardware support, they will stay as a niche brand and not for working DJs. Hopefully Algoriddm addresses this soon!

Cleveland to use phase you need to connect the RCA from phase straight into your mixer. Then you need to go into the phase software and uncheck Serato, it has work for me on the DJM S5 I had to disconnect the turntables from the mixer and put phase rca in the input of the mixer Funny enough, the turntables RCA wasn’t connected to anything and it worked for me brilliantly so please try that way

The timing of this video! :(
I've been using Djay Pro for many year and yesterday went to buy a new controller.
I really wanted the Flx10 but... Ended up HAVING to buy a Rane One as it was the only compatible controller that met my needs that was supported! The controller compatibility issue is long been ridiculous with Algoriddim and I don't think they'll change anytime soon they don't seem to care enough!
Also they really need to impliment a way to sync playlists across devices it's such a pain having to do it all manually across different devices (I have internal library I don't use streaming services)

I invested into the Reloop Beat Pad 2 system for DJAY Pro and then they dropped Spotify compatibility which was the whole reason I bought it in the first place, Apple music just doesn't have half the underground UK jungle DnB and UK Hiphop. I agree on this video DJAY needs to work with an iPad pro into Pioneer gear where it can only do the Flex4.

Fire up XDJ with VDJ works flawlessly and then some, even the EQ for stems works on outside channel eq which is awesome, Djay won't do that but I have a workaround with a Midi Fighter 64 for stems. Please employ a team to get this sorted. DJay AI beat grid or whatever it is, is absolutely game changing.

I have to correct you here Terry. Phase works on DJay, go through DJay's calibration process. I tested this way back on Phase V7. Also last I checked Djay didnt have display support for the S11. Having said that, I no longer use Djay or Serato. I'm jumping on board with VDJ, I have full S11 display support and the customization makes all DVS software look like toys. You can adjust the bleed amount for the stems. Configure the way Phase interacts (early warning meter) Best part, the devs are actual DJ's.

I’m primarily a Vinyl format DJ using an analog / hybrid DVS setup for my digital files via a Rane SL4 box which works fine with Serato, and Traktor Pro 3 without the need for a subscription …. I use iTunes / Apple Music for my digital music library so having the capability of using Apple Music as a streaming service DJ in DVS mode is huge for me… So,I decided to download the new DJay program the other day to put it through its paces… I have Two major issues with the DJay program that are almost a deal breaker.. #1) DJay does not appear to have Thrus like all the other DJ software programs in order to allow me to pivot back and forth from DVS to analog so I can play an analog vinyl record…this is a Huge oversight! #2) Would be nice if they have the mapping to allow the use of a wider range of controllers like the small NI Traktor Kontrol X1. Come on DJay….if your going to allow DVS use, then there’s a very strong chance that a DVS DJ user will want/need to still be able to transition from digital and spin real vinyl during a set without having pull wires and routing the mixer.

I'm just about done with Serato. I have a brand new very fast computer with dedicated video card, and I mostly do video mixing. When doing an on-the-fly stems analysis my video craps out, and starts getting choppy, and will last that way until I reset the video through the options tab in Serato. I've had it. Totally agree, Always liked and followed the software, but like you being able to beat grid old 80s songs & tracks with live drummers with fluctuating rhythms really made me sit up and think of changing from rekordbox, plus obviously the stems which are in real time - that’s fantastic, but I’ve got a DJ flx10 and I can’t use it with that on either Mac or iPhone 15 Pro, and at the other end of the scale I’ve still got my old DDJ-RR but that also doesn’t work with it - that’s ridiculous.
