As a left-handed shooter, my experience has been that the "outboard roll" of the pistol away from the body 30-45 degrees is even more important in avoiding malfunctions shooting from this position, since ejection is *toward* the body. One other thing you did, but didn't explicitly mention, was flagging your thumb ("thumbs up"), rather than curling it down as you might if you were making a one-handed shot at full extension. This also seems to mitigate the risk of clothing interfering with slide reciprocation a little.
I’ve trained with Bill last year a week before Covid. 2 days of amazing training with real world knowledge. On top of that, Bill is a very warm and approachable instructor where he makes the most anxious student comfortable. Bill to me, makes me feel like he is putting 100000% into his classes. He is simply outstanding
@@sybau578 You should have the Four Rules of Firearms Safety committed to memory, be able to safely execute a 4-count presentation from the holster, and be able to keep 10 rounds in a 5" circle at 3 yards. Here's an AAR for Bill's most beginner-friendly course, The Responsible Armed Citizen: www.breachbangclear.com/brain-dump-the-responsible-armed-citizen-course/
I agree with the other comments that Bill is an excellent instructor. If you have the opportunity to train with him DO NOT pass it up. Very good training with someone that has been there and done that several times over.
Great info, and interesting to see how combative-based firearms tactics are evolving in much the same way martial arts have in the last three decades. Appropriate that this video follows the Royce Gracie Field Notes. Thanks SureFire!
How does everyone feel about drawing from appendix, keeping thumb on backplate of the firearm, then once the draw is complete, rolling it around to complete the grip. I was taught that way by a professional. Thoughts?
Do you feel there are any pluses or minuses to indexing off the magazine baseplate compared to Craig Douglas’s technique of indexing on your pectoral muscle?
No matter what you learn how to do, even if you learn to do it very well, none of it will do you any good if you are not in good physical condition, have no stamina, and run out of breath at the 3 second mark. Exercise in ways that will increase your stamina. You can do it even sitting desk at work with simply boxing the air as fast as you can for as long as you can.
I have the absolute utmost respect for this guy and I love him. BUT…. Here’s my only thing. The audience is civilian, largely. To be able to remember and execute all of this stuff in the middle of an attack will be damn near impossible for the average person. If you DO go this route, all I can say is train train train train. Because when the shit hits the fan and the adrenaline starts going, ESPECIALLY if you have no experience, this will be impossible. Your brain does not function the way you think it will, again, especially if you have no experience. I’ll repeat, I love this guy and have the utmost respect for him. But when you are actually getting attacked this whole process will get you into a shit sammich. Just my thought, and just my addition to the conversation:)
... Speed rock is a good technique .... Bill Rapier .... your technique is just "another" good technique for close quarters combat .... it is not the only one that can be use.
I'm trying to understand why Speed Rock is a good technique versus simply an evolutionary step on the way to the technique shown in the video? In other words, what benefit is derived from destabilizing yourself by leaning backwards and leading with your genitals?
if you are that close and he doesn’t have a weapon why would you shoot? Did he brandish something possibly? Knife, gun, hammer? Then that would make sense. Nothing Wrong doing a Spear elbow but you can also do a lot more other things like a teep or rear teep/push kick. Maybe do some boxing on them like a combo- jab, cross, hook upper cut push off and draw your gun. Great video though love that off hand manipulation if the gun needs to be racked.
Wait, so are you shooting a guy that's just throwing fist at you, cause I don't think this will go well with another guy with a gun. Can't just shoot a guy for trying to fight you correct?
This is something I noticed as well. Going directly to a gun when someone is only physically assaulting you with personal weapons (hands and feet) will not play out well as a justified use of deadly force for an armed citizen or even a law enforcement officer. All that aside, good instruction on close up combatives including the use of a handgun.
So it’s completely plausible to die from a punch as you can research a thousand different stories of such things happening. Someone doesn’t have to have a gun for you to use deadly force. Situation dictates but there are plenty of case precedence for using lethal force against an unarmed attacker. If you were to run up and start punching a police officer, he can and most likely will shoot you and it will be deemed justified by the courts. A big misconception is that someone has to be armed for you to use lethal force and this is simply false.
Who the hell is teaching the “rock back” these days? Nobody in the last 10 years is teaching that unless they’re some sort of joke school like Range Time Tactical.
I had that same thought. I've watched a handful of videos on retention shooting and took Greg Ellifritz class on the subject and this is the first time I've seen such silliness.
Not a fan of the rock back method ( first time I ever heard of it), but the idea of your default putting your hand over your head I don’t agree with. This limits your field of view and yes it protects your head but exposes everything else that is a lot less protected. The head has biological body armor and can take quite a bit of abuse, I.e. you mentioned beating someone with yours. You could just move your head out of the way to avoid that potential punch or club, but your other vitals can’t move around as quick. Also this method is only helpful if the guy doesn’t have a gun of his own, if he has a gun then you look stupid as fuck. Not saying you should never use your arm to protect your head, but it should not be your default muscle memory response ( fact not up for debate). The correct way this should be done is arm across your body (-the ridiculous and extinct rock back), this will not limit your field of view in any way and will allow you to protect your vulnerable vitals, create or maintain standoff, help manage your garments, keeps your hand close to help with that malfunction you had, maintain positive control of your weapon and also but not least adds a couple more inches of biological matter his bullet might have to travel through.
If your head had infallible armor no one would ever get knocked out. If your "muscle memory" precludes your ability to make decisions in the moment you've got bigger problems to sort out. This video is showing you one moment in time and one technique to address a specific problem. Besides 14 years in Dev, all of it during GWOT, this guy has a deep BJJ, Muay Thai and boxing background, your theories are interesting, his have been validated (fact, but feel free to debate).
Agreed. He’s been hand to hand in Afghanistan, I’m pretty sure Bill has the goods and this internet fudd wishes he could have done 10% of what bill has done
The "Spear elbow" or half shell is useless as well. If you have to shoot from the hip they have hands on you already,or contact is imminent within 1.5 seconds. Would you stand there like that if someone intent on going hands on, or has an edged or impact weapon is in your face or can do so in a second or so? Of course not. Are you going to just stand there static and on-axis of the threat while the same occurs? I certainly hope not. See how your shield/spear elbow goes against a knife, baseball bat or a left hander.... 1. Consider it may be a to hand solution first prior to pulling the gun. If you drop yoru right arm to draw and the threat is left handed and you get stabbed or knocked out before ro even as you shoot then you lose the fight. 2. Use the non master hand to post, deflect, trap or drive the fore-arm into the threats neck/face. 3. Do so while moving off axis and maintaining space 4. If required do so while closing with the threat e.g. if you are at contact weapon range and closing will reduce/negate the damage you take Moderate to heavy contact force on force scenarios will quickly show you how useless the "Spear elbow" is when facing a threat at physical contact/impact/edged weapon range.. Don't believe me check out the Dog Brothers "Die Less Often" Videos where students from military and LEA backgrounds get owned.
Interesting theories. You might also check out the fight Bill Rapier's Sayoc instructor, Tom Kier, had with Top Dog at one of the Gatherings (he did not get owned). Then consider that Bill is also a legit BJJ black belt with significant Muay Thai experience....then add that to operating in non-permissive environments for 14 years of GWOT. This is one technique, one video, one moment in time, and it's not being offered as the solution to everything.
This just scratches the surface of what Bill brings to the table. Excellent work sir.
やっぱこの撃ち方カッコよくて好き
One of the nicest and humblest guys in the training community that you will ever meet
If you people out there ever have the chance to train with Bill Rapier, I highly recommend it. Thx Bill / Surefire for a great video.🇺🇸👍🏻

What level of shooting should I be at before singing up for one of his classes? I am a beginner.

That was a great video !!! A lot of great info, and Mr. Rapier explained the topic very clearly, and right to the point 👍🏻👍🏻🇳🇴

First time watching this. Great video Bill
This is so good.
Please host a course in TX. I'm so down.

Curious on what was going on with the pistol at 4:26.
Great stuff. Always remember the most important word in "gun fight" is not gun!
Good stuff. 👍

Great video brother! Your teaching real Reality tactics. Thanks
And then I did this and bam that and boom! And so you you i did BAM you know hook jab shield elbow BOOM!
Dang I need a mma dummy now. This is hard to train without my off hand being able to hit the threat
"Bill" so what's the main lesson you learned here today class?
"Class" Don't fu*k with Bill!!!
Awesome! 👍🇺🇸⚓🐸
So somebody throws a haymaker and you shoot the guy?

nice!
Is it even a good idea to put rounds into some unarmed guy? Some input would be great👍🏼 it seems like it wouldn’t do well in court
Dom roso has a video sbout this.

I keep wondering the same thing.
Ha...! When I see guys do this arm over head retention maneuver...I think they are trying to smell their armpit...😷
Oh how clever of a quip you simpleton fudd

The only prerequisite is that you fear for your life and it must be reasonable.
States with castle doctrine. At home. Not in a supermarket parking lot or a restaurant.
