I'm a single mom of two. You just safe my life by following your guidance here. The machine died on me few days ago while washing the kids' school uniform. I smell a little burnt smell.. Worrying I migth have to spend 600-700$ for a new one that it could take weeks to replace.. So I look up lots of vid here.. until I found your clip which have exactly opening like mine to get into lid switch. I order the part online. Get it the next day and change the lid switch myself. less than 30 mins, my washer is back to live. Thank you very much for your sharing. Blessed be 🙏
thank you for making this video. It gave me the courage to replace the lid switch myself on my old Inglis washing machine. It worked! I ordered a replacement switch on amazon!!! Thank you!! Saved me a lot of money!
Excellent video... I just tested my older Worldpool washer and found that my lid switch sounded absolutely fine. So i was hoping that it would be obvious that is was bad, but it looked AND sounded fine. Since I had the back cover already oped, I decided to make a small alligator clip jumper to mimic a brand new switch. Since the plastic is old and brittle, it damn near destroyed itself , just trying to get the switch harness out of the washing machine. So I need to order a replacement anyway. I was shocked when I set the dial to spin and empty, and plugged it back in the wall. It actually started spinning. I'm about to order a replacement lid switch. Thanks for the great tip. It put me in the right direction..
Thank you for this video. When I lift the lid I can hear the switch clicking loudly and figured that was not the problem. Then i read one of the comments that said one person wired around it even though he could hear the switch and that fixed it. Sooooo I just did the same and Viola! It works. Thank you so much!
Hey Jeff. Just wanted to tell you that all your hard work and great information you did for us on the tragic event of Champaign towers is awesome stuff.. thanks its kinda cool to see you over here in the crazy washing machine fixes.
i have a kenmore washer with lid lock. i did diag and have it narrowed down to the lid switch or the shifter/actuator. Any way to eliminate the lid lock switch to test to see if that is the issue vs buying both parts. Lost job..moneys tight. TY
Hmmm my switch looks a bit different….does not have the black cover…the spring and mechanism are in view…May I send a picture? I may have to order one anyway.😊
Hello Jeff thank you for the Video. I ve got a frigidaire washer. Like 25 years old. My timer went out. Took it out cleaned contacts and still nothing, was thinking about using toggle switches and just stand there till each cycle was finished. Because really machine is to old can't get replacement part. And don't have really any money to do anything. 1st whT do you think about the toggle switch, and do you have any ideas.. I'm sure this would or could be a head scratcher lol I know it is for me, I've been looking at the wiring diagram. Thanks again
This must be 20 years newer than my 35 year old GE that I by-passed the lid switch on abs later added heavier pull springs to motor because it’s belt drive. Don’t for get to live the sliders for smooth tight action. Mine is going into it’s 45 year of top load action. Had a capacitor fail to spin dry load as the motor is reversed. Capacitor is not attached to motor but my Fluke 87 type V has capacitance scale a cane now where close to rating on case. Well, $8.10 cent later, working like a champ. I did remove the centrifugal switch and cleaned the contacts with 400 grit sandpaper. This switch changes from high toque, low speed to high speed rates torque. Thanks for the video!
Mine is direct drive inglis washer. Pretty old , changed pump, checked manually that it spins but when I connect all together, it won't spin after filling tub with water. Inglis IE48000 model.
@@suredross1 I don’t know for sure, but many have a motor belt drive the drum. It is tensioned by a spring system, so full and won’t spin, remove belt to make sure motor turns. Then check tube to see if tube turns. If all well, the motor may be weak due to bad capacitor. On washing machines, the start capacitor is not bolted to the motor. So with good light, follow wires to find a the “Twinky” cupcake sized capacitor. My Digital Multi Meter a “Fluke 87 type 5, has a capacitor meter. The specs are on the side of the can. If 540 mF and test at 210 mF, replace it. It list voltage and purchase one that is slightly close or higher, say 580 mF but 600 volts. Higher volts are fine but capacitance should be close. A capacitor works on A/C voltage but time to charge, then discharge. This extra time delays the magnetic field induced into the armature. This is more torque with less HP! Once up to speed, a centrifugal switch changes to full regular A/C induction for full power & speed. My best guess is you need a new capacitor. This is common on A/C units on outside condenser’s or fan. Inside fan that circulates air the house may not use on depending on year built. Best of luck!
Is it possible that the timer is bad? I have a belt drive Hotpoint top loader washer HSWP1000M4WW. The reason I ask is because my timer sometimes would not turn off with the timer knob. I taped the safety lid switch together so I could open it to see how well it was agitating. Then one day it just stopped washing or spinning even when I turned the timer manually. My timer is advancing through all the cycles, though. Any thoughts?
Hey Jeff, my washer was doing its job for about 5 minutes but then I had to pause it to add more clothes. It was pause for 4 minutes or so with the lid up. I put the lid down and now it won’t continue with the cycle. How to I get it to start going again? Do I follow these steps?
Maybe it got into a messed up state, try to unplug it and plug back in. IT could also be a coincidence that maybe the door switch broke when you opened it.
Any recommendations for a washer not agitating but will spin out? Whirlpool imana ..agitator is one entire piece. If that helps🙂it’s not the lid switch lol
I have a Whirlpool lsq 9500 doesn't agitate or spin. I noticed the selector dial makes clicking noises when it's supposed to be agitating or spinning any idea?
And save them! I'm still looking for the videos and pics the last time I had fix mine, only a couple years ago. This must be one of the few videos out of hundreds that show this exact machine, without the easy front cover that also surprises those with the top front lock that I always thought was the lid switch, as well because you can't see the one in the back at all until you take that top cover off. Thank you so much for helping me remember what I had to deal with last time when both washer and dryer broke down the same day. Oh, the heavy loaders I live with will get a no heavy loaded washer mandate from me, this time. Kidding Aside from that, does that one reset that some do to lift the lid 6 times after powering off for over a minute and power back up, lift 6 times a couple inches in less than 15 seconds, within 30 second of plugging the power back in work on this machine, as well? My machine wouldn't spin or agitate, instead go through its start up while switch is set to spin and on it's last action spin light comes on but it instead starts to fill with water, no matter what I try, to get its brain to stop doing it. Thanks again for your videos if you happen to read this, it really helps me a lot in these and your found sales videos on tools.
Uh you forgot a mjor part that breaks. there is a plastic gear in the tub that connects the agitator . That if strips out, it won't spin or agitate. It's easy figure out if broken, if the agitator spins in both directions it is stripped , it is only meant to spin in one direction.
I had trouble with mine shaking, it turns out it was the suport shocks, cost me just as much as a new used one to fix it. Didn't have a truck back then just decided to fix it.
We had an issue with our old washer 2 years ago that would have cost $600 to fix! Instead we went to Lowes, bought new Samsung washer and dryer, where it was $1100, marked down to $750 for a sale, then we used a 10% off Lowes coupon to save even more!
Hey Jeff, seems like the switch replacement worked, but it what steps would you have taken if it was the coupling that was broken? Good source of parts for these older washers?
Like I mentioned in the video, when you seethe couplings, they just pull straight off the motor spindle. It requires a little bit of streetlight, as they are wedged onto the spindle tight.
I did an older machine like this for the coupler . We changed the pump out water pump while we were there, that far in. We also re-made the drum spring attach connections to give it a new area on them to wear. I learned alot. The supply house wouldn't get us new springs. I had to use a trick from the GM truck garage to open a new spring loop for attaching them to their links. Supply house said we needed a new machine. Nope. The owner replaced them (washer and dryer) and gave the good old ones to the delivery man. Isn't that just great.
Do *not* detach the clip(s) at 2:10. The hooks at the base of control console detach from the machine top by pulling the console slightly foward. Then the entire console rotates upward and back (as shown) when the two screws are removed. The clips anchor the hinge pieces to the back panel that allow the console to rotate upwards and should not be "pushed in."
Hey there . Here is my issue I hope you could take some of time to help me I would really appreciate it .:. I have a hot point that stop working … I watched several videos and I end up replacing the capacitor and check the pump for any stuck socks :: put everything back together and it still don’t work … the Door switch clicks and makes a sounds when I close the door so it’s working .. the washer gets the water 💧 necessary to start the cycle but it never starts .. not even a sound it doesnt do anything. So idk what could it be . The belt looks good I think , there’s a new capacitor and the pump work too and the door switch works too . So what could it be ?
I don't know on this one but I would say that is probably not your problem because if the door switch was bad it would not spin at all. That is a safety mechanism to prevent anything from moving when the door is open. So I would have to start hunting down something else may be on the controller board.
I would have thought the older machines would have been easier to do maintenance on. From my experience it's the newer stuff that is built where it's not easy to take apart and when you do, your only option is a $300 board or you gotta buy a new unit.
Jef can you help me with my Bosch washer dryer . The problem was not agitating replaced with new carbon brush S. Switch on it worked went through th washing cycle ok drained the washer ok went into the spin cycle started to Rev up just before going into high speed cuts off and the spin cycle restarts
Don't know much about Bosch, but I have seen people before offer up that maybe it's not draining completely so can't spin at high speed. Try it with tiny load. search google for "Bosch washing machine won't spin at fast speed"
You'll have to keep searching for videos on your model to see if it's maybe the controller board, or a relay somewhere. Try Appliance parts pros, enter your model and see what video they have under the symptoms section that show how to fix it
I have a issue with my Maytag top loader… I found the belt was disconnected from pulleys and the Lilly on the motor was shot… so I relaxed the belt and motor… now the washer will fill with water then buzz and do nothing.. I can unplug the washer and put it into spin fine… just need help figuring out why it won’t agitate after filling with water… please help!
New motor ,coupler and capaster ,machine won't agitate I even took the motor out but kept the power connector and still the motor only kicks in on spin ,you think its the timer or clutch ?
Hello, my whylpole don’t spin, don’t agitate and don’t drain water. I here something in the motor like is working but if don’t spin, agitate and don’t drain water it could be the coupler? Or the swtich?
First thing I would do is pull the washing machine away from the wall and test the drainage into the wall and make sure your pipes are not clogged I doubt that would be the case but this is a very unique failure that you have so anything could happen. If that's not the case then make sure the hose coming out of the washing machine going into the wall is not clogged. And if that is not the case then you probably have a problem with the solenoid inside the washing machine that tells it to pump the water out
Yes, and check at Costco, because a lot of times they add a year or more onto the appliance. We just bought this week an LG OLED 55CX TV, and Costco already had their 1 extra year plus Costco Concierge service, then during the sale this week they threw in the Square Trade 3 extra years, a $99 value free, so now we have a 5 year warranty.
This is WHY DeWalt needs to make an adapter plate for TSTAK to Tough System. Look how the ToughCase+ boxes just sit there in top of the TS boxes all loose and things. Instead of having to lift two cases, you could have just lifted one with everything snapped-in, clicked-in, and secured. They need to think literally outside the boxes.
What if I see oil around the motor cuplink. I’ve taken the motor off completely but I see oil. I’m thinking at this point instead of having to remove the break it may be cheaper to buy a used one
@@jeffostroff oh my bad...didn't think of that,Ive watched 20 videos! Mine won't spin clothes out...started with agitator the dogs (1 ref.to) is worn & piece that comes out before you get there washer is broke & everyone is saying it's the belt!? Hope not...😱😘
Yes, that's a lot safer on the top loader than the front loader, but still would be nervous some idiot sticks their hand in during agitation, or a kid sticks their head in and gets strangled.
My washer filled with water and just stopped and won't agitate. Don't know how to get water out and need time to order lid switch online. My clothes are starting to stink they've been sitting in water for 3 days now. So how can I bypass until order comes in
@@jeffostroff : I think they're saying as a test. Sometimes the failure isn't always as obvious as a burned contact (smell might have hinted at that as well). Some of the newer is a sealed switch activated by a magnet.
Great video Unfortunately. My washing machine is just dead. Fills with water. Got to the lid bypass and still does nothing except for wanting to add more water.. Plus I have a load in it right now. Lol
@jeffostroff. Thanks for the video with great instructions. I'm also glad that you included the tip to clean up underneath the appliance. Just because no one can see underneath the appliance doesn't mean we can't take pride in a job done well. BTW: Is that Toughsystem 2.0 large tool box the one you dropped off your roof scaring your poor cat during the comparison tests? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
Glad it was helpful! yes that is the 2.0 I dropped. I wanted to make sure I had it in this video for its impressive looks, and of course to add some affiliate links to the 2.0 in the video description!
This is in the garage. Also hot water heaters don't warm the area around them, they are too well insulated. That's why they are room temperature when you touch the tank.
@@jeffostroff OK, lets point the FLIR at the tank, and then at the wall. Point it at the hot water pipes, and then the wall. Point it at the dryer, and it's vents, and then at the wall. I'm sure you will see that they do give off heat. Saving a few bucks on E, doesn't make for a bad builder, or bad choice.
@@ryanmacewen511 Well you don't live in Florida, so you don't know. I have 2 friends with drastically bad problems now because the idiot builder put their Ac units in the garage rather inside in a conditioned space of a closet like normal respected builders do. Now they have AC units that are sweating profusely in the high heat and humidity of the garage, and at one friend's house, because of the way they built the AC area, it all that excessive sweating leaked water through the wall into the house into their dining room and destroyed the wood floor. Twice.
jeffostroff I think the physics are the same everywhere. I wouldn’t put a central AC unit inside a garage. I thought you were referring to washing machines in a garage being a bad idea. Humid air from these machines is also another good reason to place them outside conditioned space. Depends on the scope and budget. On the low side it’s a good idea.
My machine fills but won't drain. Does not agitate, does not spin. Makes a loud noise when on the agitate cycle, "bang-bang-bang" like a machine gun. Coupler replaced, issue persists. What next?
Good video but you should have checked the agitator dogs (small plastic teardrop shaped pieces) in the top of the agitator before you took the whole machine apart.
Did not need to check the dogs, we knew the motor was not running when it should have been, that is an electrical issue typically. If there was a problem with the dogs, at least you would hear the motor running.
Bro you said,”So when I move it back with my thumb”,Then use your pointer finger/index finger whatever it’s called,HaHa!!Jk,But anyways Thanks for the video was very informative,Ill be fixing my mother’s washer today with this shared knowledge,If it’s the knuckle between the motor and transmission I’ll probably have buy a new one because this would be the second time in two yrs I’d have to replace it,So something else must be making this part fail andthe ynitvis older than dirt
Saves time and effort, you always want to move the unit the least amount as possible in a customers home( granted it’s your friends unit) you feel the coupler with your hand and tell if it’s engaging before taking off the motor and shell and if it need to be changed out 15 min repair without moving the unit and taking off the outer shell
Saved me $750. Words cannot express my family’s gratitude. Thanks a lot

At approx 7:38 I notice you test the transmission by spinning it counter clockwise (to the left). Should it be able to spin both ways?
Yes, look at 7:56. The motor should be free to spin both directions, it is induced spinning when current passes through the windings.
What if the cuppler doesn't spin when off? Does it mean something else or the same problem?

You'll have to keep searching for videos on your model to see if it's maybe the controller board, or a relay somewhere. Try Appliance parts pros, enter your model and see what video they have under the symptoms section that show how to fix it
@@jeffostroff Thank you so much for your quick response
I have a issue with my Maytag top loader… I found the belt was disconnected from pulleys and the Lilly on the motor was shot… so I relaxed the belt and motor… now the washer will fill with water then buzz and do nothing.. I can unplug the washer and put it into spin fine… just need help figuring out why it won’t agitate after filling with water… please help!
New motor ,coupler and capaster ,machine won't agitate I even took the motor out but kept the power connector and still the motor only kicks in on spin ,you think its the timer or clutch ?
It could also be the controller board not enabling the motor
Not spinning clicking noise
Thanks for the video good sir!
You bet! thanks for watching tonight Jory!
Jeff another great video
Thanks Noemy, glad you liked it
Hello, my whylpole don’t spin, don’t agitate and don’t drain water. I here something in the motor like is working but if don’t spin, agitate and don’t drain water it could be the coupler? Or the swtich?
I would examine your door switch first. With your particular model, google the model number and look for other people with similar issues
Hi bro what is the number of the part thanks
🛒 Whirlpool 8318084 Lid Switch for Washer: amzn.to/3fZZVIy
@@jeffostroff thanks so much appreciate
Our whirlpool is spinning without draining. But the spinning sounds different. The clothes seen In there with soapy water. What can I do?
First thing I would do is pull the washing machine away from the wall and test the drainage into the wall and make sure your pipes are not clogged I doubt that would be the case but this is a very unique failure that you have so anything could happen. If that's not the case then make sure the hose coming out of the washing machine going into the wall is not clogged. And if that is not the case then you probably have a problem with the solenoid inside the washing machine that tells it to pump the water out
Good job Jeff and hello from ocala fl..
Thanks for watching tonight mito!
Changed mine. But it still won't spin. Any ideas?
Thank u boss ..so much
Most welcome Rogelio
Word of advice if you huy one of $800.00 new washers or dryers by the 3-year extended warranty i did the pump went out on my three-year-old Samsung
That's a good idea for a 3rd party product.
What if I see oil around the motor cuplink. I’ve taken the motor off completely but I see oil. I’m thinking at this point instead of having to remove the break it may be cheaper to buy a used one
Sometimes there is a bit of grease, they don't usually use oil. It could be from somewhere else
Hey, I open my twintub, the spinner won't start on its own, it needs a boost and checked my capacitor that is in good condition.
Hopefully the motor is not going.
@@jeffostroff yeah, but what could be wrong? The spin motor just buzzes and it won't spin.
So it was the lid switch?
Yes, in this one, you could see all the scorch marks, and it wasn't clicking anymore.
Didn't ck the hose that goes to motor I've seen on other videos...sm.clothing clogging!?
Machine working fine after this
@@jeffostroff oh my bad...didn't think of that,Ive watched 20 videos! Mine won't spin clothes out...started with agitator the dogs (1 ref.to) is worn & piece that comes out before you get there washer is broke & everyone is saying it's the belt!? Hope not...😱😘
why was it not spinning , i must have missed that in the video, it said how to repair if not spinning ? Tear down was good.
bad door switch. since the machine thought the door was open, it would not turn on the spin cycle
How do you get the water out
You can use a wet vac
Cup, a bucket, and lots of walking...
Alot of those older washers you can just bypass the lid switch. Yes it can be dangerous
Yes, that's a lot safer on the top loader than the front loader, but still would be nervous some idiot sticks their hand in during agitation, or a kid sticks their head in and gets strangled.
How do you bypass the lid switch
My washer filled with water and just stopped and won't agitate. Don't know how to get water out and need time to order lid switch online. My clothes are starting to stink they've been sitting in water for 3 days now. So how can I bypass until order comes in
@@jeffostroff : I think they're saying as a test. Sometimes the failure isn't always as obvious as a burned contact (smell might have hinted at that as well). Some of the newer is a sealed switch activated by a magnet.
Great video
Unfortunately. My washing machine is just dead. Fills with water. Got to the lid bypass and still does nothing except for wanting to add more water..
Plus I have a load in it right now. Lol
where is the filter pump on a kenmore heavy duty top loader washing machine
Sorry don't know never opened one up, but go to appliancepartspros and enter your model number, they will have the drawings there for your unit
Sadly still can't fix my issue :( Replaced capacitor, lid switch, the dial and the motor. Thing will still not turn on =/
This leans towards a bad controller board
@jeffostroff. Thanks for the video with great instructions. I'm also glad that you included the tip to clean up underneath the appliance. Just because no one can see underneath the appliance doesn't mean we can't take pride in a job done well.
BTW: Is that Toughsystem 2.0 large tool box the one you dropped off your roof scaring your poor cat during the comparison tests?
Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
Glad it was helpful! yes that is the 2.0 I dropped. I wanted to make sure I had it in this video for its impressive looks, and of course to add some affiliate links to the 2.0 in the video description!
he sounds likeCharlie Sheen at times lmao
I'm.....Winning!
Inside, where the hot water, and hot air warm the room?
What next?
If all those things are wrong I would look at the main controller
@@jeffostroff Main controller? You mean an electrical part? Or the motor? I"m in the process of replacing the trans.
My washing machine spinning does want to take out water from wet clothing
Very Good!... #131 ✝ {11-9-2022}
Bro my machine only agitating but not spin when washing
Bro you said,”So when I move it back with my thumb”,Then use your pointer finger/index finger whatever it’s called,HaHa!!Jk,But anyways Thanks for the video was very informative,Ill be fixing my mother’s washer today with this shared knowledge,If it’s the knuckle between the motor and transmission I’ll probably have buy a new one because this would be the second time in two yrs I’d have to replace it,So something else must be making this part fail andthe ynitvis older than dirt
Man I can't keep track of my fingers! Working in that 100 degree garage was killing me that night
Theres absolutely no need to take the "shell" off to replace the coupler
yes there is, how else would you get to it?
@@jeffostroff lean the unit back and work from underneath
Saves time and effort, you always want to move the unit the least amount as possible in a customers home( granted it’s your friends unit) you feel the coupler with your hand and tell if it’s engaging before taking off the motor and shell and if it need to be changed out 15 min repair without moving the unit and taking off the outer shell
I ain’t doing all of that!

There's a good hash tag
Am i crazy or did he just disassemble and reassemble but didn't "fix" anything???
You are crazy. I disassembled, installed a new switch and reassembled
🍻🍺
Great to see you on the premiere tonight again Konaman!
LOL, that's too much work for me. Computers are easier to fix.
This one was quite a bit of work, but saves $400 repair bill
