About a year ago we spent a day exploring that area, including Hovenweep National Monument. It is very cool, but also (as you said) very remote and spread out! There are some cool remote camping spots...although some of the best ones are tricky to get to. We were there in Dec/Jan and there weren't a lot of people around, but I don't think it gets very heavy usage even in the Summer. Fun Fact: Osprey Packs are headquartered right there in Cortez, Colorado.
I have lived in the Cortez area my whole life and have yet to visit this site! Mesa verde is cool but this place.... magical this whole area is amazing. Lots lots more than just those, just gotta know the secret spots! Awesome video man!
We visited Aztec Ruins National Monument in NM and Moon House Ruins in Utah. Both were awesome however fair warning, the drive to Moon House requires high clearance vehicle and is a rough drive. Definitely worth it though!
