  • Our big 100th episode of Grand Adventure was supposed to be about both Canyons of the Ancients AND Hovenweep National Monuments, but our RV had other ideas. While camping at Mancos State Park, and en route to another camp at Bears Ears National Monument in Utah, we visit the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, tour the Lowry Pueblo ruins that date to the 10th Century, and hike to more ruins in the National Monument's Sand Canyon before our RV left us on the side of the road.

    Broken springs are not uncommon. I have read on the RV forums of it happening quite a few times. A good spring and suspension shop can build a set that will last, made of better steel, than the cheap china made ones used by the manufacturers. At the very least, go with a higher rated spring pack than the original. Change them all now, they will continue to break. The center equalizer can be replaced by a rubber cushioned one such as the Dexter E-Z Flex or the Lippert Equa-Flex which will make a smoother tow, less chucking of the trailer, and a little easier ride for the springs too.
    Sorry for your bad luck, and thanks for another great video.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks as always Charles! Yes, I'm going to have to replace all, and plan to upgrade at the same time. Let's face it, the places we go we're not easy on that trailer's suspension system, either. I know that there's a lot of play already in the equalizer on the side that broke. Thanks for the references on specific ones to look at!

    great video as always, and congrats on making your 100 episode. Glad you were able to repair you leaf springs , geez can't imagine that happing, ugh. So the hike looked amazing, it was a prefect day for it, beautiful blue sky out , and the dog looked like it was having such a good time.👍🐶

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks as always, Eric! Regarding the leaf spring, like I said in another reply to another viewer, stuff breaks...it's all just part of the adventure. We were very fortunate to have found Tom Gentry by phone from the side of the road (thank you Google Maps!), and likewise very fortunate that he was such a great guy! Indeed, Colin & Abby's dachshund "Freely," a.k.a. "Adventure Dog" had a blast. Our own two dogs caught up to us in the next episode from Bears Ears, but thereafter I'm not sure that Maggie will be making much of an appearance on camera for a while, as she somehow injured her knee in her back leg this past weekend, most likely a torn ACL. We have to try to keep her down to let it heal a bit and see how she does without an intact ACL, or whether she'll need to have it surgically repaired. Once again, stuff breaks...it's all just part of the adventure. 😉

    Centennial video, nice. Looks like your spring had a defect from the factory. I do find that guys named Tom are fair, personable, and skilled. Ha!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha indeed! What I tried to show in that close-up of the spring (admittedly out of focus) is that the metal appeared to show an aged stress fracture that propagated when it ultimately failed.

    • @TomSpurlock
      @TomSpurlock 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrandAdventure Yes, I saw the aged fracture, showing up as a discolored area, which appeared to be a manufacturing crack during the cool down process of forming the spring. It was likely caused from impurities in the spring steel. Nice place to break down though.

  • @mikemurphyseemsliked

    Love the Bossa Nova at 7:55 mins... Crappy about that leaf spring... I've NEVER heard or seen that happen :/

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After we published this video, lots of folks came forward to share their own similar failures. We're hardly easy on our trailer the way we use it, but that dark area on the fracture would indicate that there was already a stress crack, probably a result of poor heat treating of the metal. That said, one future project is to beef up all four of our spring packs and equalizers.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much, Randy! Bears Ears is an incredible place, one of my favorites that we've visited recently. It's remote, underdeveloped and despite the controversy surrounding both its creation and subsequent downsizing, it still appears to be very under-visited. There's a ton of remote boondocking within the National Monument itself, with ruins literally around every turn in every canyon. We have so much more to see there, we're anxious to return.

    How did you find the Mobil RV Repair - Yelp?
    You have shown so many cliff dwelling ruins. I had no idea that there were this many. I thought there was only one!
    Thank you for the lessons!
    You would have made a great history teacher. 👍🏻

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like many folks, it wasn't until I was an adult that I began to appreciate history. I hated it in school, but I now love to learn about the places we visit.
      As for cliff dwellings, this is nothin'! Wait until you get to episode 101 from Bears Ears, where they're absolutely everywhere you turn. And in Bears Ears they're seldom marked, identified, signed, or hinted at in any way. You just go hiking across the countryside and they're everywhere.
      As for the mobile RV repair, we just pulled up Google Maps. If the first person you call isn't able to help, just ask for a recommendation. We've gotten lucky after one or two phone calls, every time that we've needed something. This guy was amazing -- we were back on the road in less than 3 hours, and his bill was less than $250. That included an hour's drive each way, plus a detour into Cortez to purchase the leaf springs.

    Great video. I was just in the Four Corners area 2 weeks ago to shoot 8 clips for my channel( Bears, Hovenweep, COTA, Yucca House, Natural Bridges/ Wapatki and of course, Monument valley.( plus Horse shoe bend.) Canyons was kind of a bust for me because the weather was a little rough going. we had planned to do the hike you did the following day but didn't want my buddy to miss the experience of the Four Corners. Couldn't believe how cold the area was for May. We camped in 30 degree weather at Navajo NM and that was it for us. a little under prepared. Anyways, awesome clip and you have a new sub. Looking forward to seeing Bears Ears as that was a highlight for us on our trip....truly amazing. Hope you take a look see at my channel which focuses on travel to Americas national parks...Take care and safe travels.

      Just subbed, Robert! Looking forward to checking out your channel. Sounds like you covered a lot of the same areas we did, and it'll be fun to compare our takes. Our trip was rather rushed so we only got to scratch the surface, especially in Bears Ears, so we'll certainly be back to see more.

  • @bruceh3786
    @bruceh3786 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like you picked a good trip for your 100th episode. Now that is one more spot I need to check out. Nice job!
    You and trailer tires and suspensions do seem to have some conflicts! I noticed you saw my post in the community section when the spring broke. Please do a video on how you ultimately address the issue. I have a couple of fiends that had the same thing happen with the springs on their trailers. It is a weak spot most are not aware of. It seems the trailers are built to make the one year warranty and then you are on your own. Another channel I follow just replaced the springs on a new trailer bought in January. He noticed one side was getting lower than the other and was lucky to catch the problem before the spring broke.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We certainly will, Bruce! Once we get some cash together (just returned to work last week after a one-year hiatus) we'll be upgrading all spring packs and equalizers, for the places we tend to go put a lot of stress on that OEM suspension.

    • @bruceh3786
      @bruceh3786 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Marc, temps where you dry camp may make this question irrelevant to you, but are you able to run AC using solar and battery, or is a generator the way to go? How are you doing it when temps get high? Congrats on 100 yours are unique in quality of information on the locations you visit.

We were amazed by that place -- we got a stellar and private boondocking spot within the National Monument and within walking distance of House On Fire.
