My favorite Gamecube memory is 2006, when Twilight Princess has its duel release. Twilight Princess for the gamecube was the first game I ever pre-ordered on my own. At the time, I was very against the way they flipped the world for the wii version and wanted to play it on the original hardware, so I stuck with my Gamecube preorder instead of buying a wii.
Well, I was just starting college and didn't have a TV, so I paid 20 bucks for one of those tiny screens that attach to the top of the Gamecube itself and played through the whole game on that tiny screen in my dorm room. I remember it would overheat and wash out all of the colors after a couple hours, so I'd have turn it off and wait for the screen to cool down before I could play again. It took forever, but it's such a fun memory. I still have the screen attached to my gamecube to this day (though I don't use it anymore).

I vividly remember as a kid, my older brother dressed up as Santa and gifted me a brand new shiny gamecube with a copy of Mario party 7 (my first Mario party game on the gamecube) and I still have the same gamecube to this day. The gamecube will always hold a special place in my heart just for that reason alone and the plethora of games I remembered playing over and over like Melee, Sunshine, Paper Mario TTYD, etc

Metroid Prime. That was a title I could never forget. Especially when it was released during a rain storm. I lived in Washington state at the time, rain was a given, but winter brr.
I remember, picking up Metroid Fusion as well. But to have Prime, seeing where the series could go next, was incredible. From the music, controls, sound design, and visuals. It was an awesome rollercoaster ride from start to finish.
Sadly also ran into a bug during play. If you moved too quickly thru doors, usually this is when the disc might load. If you try to zip thru said doors, it would later cause the game to lock up while boarding an elevator.
The console would make a high pitch "beep" sound. It was so annoying. Thankfully it only happened once.
It was later fixed in the Player's Choice edition. But it taught me a lesson, there is no need to rush thru every corridor. But that first run, and adrenaline kicked in. Cannot help it

I started with the PS2 this gen and loved it to death... but there's was still so much I was missing out with GC. It's when I actually got my first job as a grocery clerk and I saved up for a system and then grabbed one with Smash Melee and Windwaker. The Wii had just released, but it was hard to get one so I was happy to catch up with Gamecube titles :) Ah memories, great times with this little cube.

On the topic of Pikmin during each day Olimar would write a log of his day, and going off memory some of the logs talked about his family and wondering if he will ever see them again. That plus the time limit pushed me to not squander any days and try to get Olimar back safely to his family.

As an RPG fan, I always thought the GameCube had one of the best RPG lineups of all Nintendo consoles apart from the SNES. There are really a lot of GameCube exclusive RPGs i like very much: Tales of Symphonia, Paper Mario TTYD, the Pokémon games (Colosseum and XD) and both Baten Kaitos games.

Did you play Fire Emblem Path of Radiance on the Gamecube? If so, what did you think of it?
I enjoyed it. It's the first 3d Fire Emblem to be made and one of my favorites/first entries into the Franchise.
(My other first/favorite tandem entry was Sacred Stones on the Game Boy Advance. I did link Por and SS together via the Gba/Gcn link cable to unlock optional content on Path of Radiance which was a neat added bonus to that nice game)

It was great seeing him grow, during his journeys, from a teen struggling to become a leader, in the first game, to becoming a mature leader and a buff powerhouse of a specimen in the second game.

I absolutely loved my GameCube and have had such fond memories playing Super Smash Bros. Melee after school with one of my best friends practically everyday; we never got tired of it and found the game endlessly enjoyable. Clocking in over 1000 hours until the game told us to stop playing and go outside lol. I did enjoy my Wii and Wii U, but the GameCube imo had a major edge in comparison regarding its simpler console set up to plug in and start playing immediately; this allowed for it to be much easier to bring over to friends houses for fun gaming get-togethers. There are still games I wish i got to finish off my GameCube library, hopefully that can happen one day.

I was born literally a week after the Wii came out so I never got a GameCube until much later. I got my wii in 2012, but I didn’t play anything but Wii sports/resort and Lego Star Wars the complete saga. Then I got my Wii U in 2014 with Mario 3D world, and that’s when I started picking up Mario games. It wasn’t until the switch, however, with Nintendo in the name that I realized the people making these consoles weren’t just “Wii”. I got my switch in 2018 and with it Mario odyssey, and around that time I had started watching some Mario-related TH-cam videos. Through them I learned about past Nintendo consoles. It wasn’t until the summer of 2021 that I got my hands on a GameCube. I only have 2 games, being Star Wars: the clone wars and sonic adventure 2, but I’m hoping to get a few more for Christmas. (Especially double dash) even though I have so little experience with it I still love the system to death and I’m glad I’ve finally been able to start closing the gap in my Nintendo play history.

My childhood perfectly aligned with the GC/ps2/xbox generation. It was in that sweet spot of 5th-8th grade where you'd walk home from school with friends and just hang out at someone's house playing some local multiplayer. I remember an older cousin at the time, probably 18-20 putting the system down just over how the controller looked. I remember coming home from a trip and just seeing it set up in my bedroom for me. The battle mode in Four Swords was the best thing ever. I mained pikachu and young link in melee, tho I had a friend who absolutely destroyed me as sheik. Finally got a GBP many years after when i was in college. Saw thousand year door at a used game shop for $40 a few years ago but stupidly didn't grab it.

my favorite memory of the gamecube is how i bought one - one of my college friends brought their old n64 to the shared apartment-dorm that we snagged together for sophomore year, and we were playing it together one night, enjoying ourselves when we all realized collectively that if we pooled our money we could just, like, walk to wal-mart and buy a new gamecube. So, like responsible proto-adults, we immediately took the 45-minute trip walking to wal-mart in the middle of the night and bought one. we even carried it home like the little purple lunchbox it was. it kept us entertained the entirety of college!

A few nice words from Russia for GameCube!
I really love the console. It wasn’t even a question what console to buy. Back then, when I learnt that GC was released with Smash bros I immediately made my mind to get it. Never owned N64 though. It was super rare and expensive.
GameCube was very rare in Russia btw, coz they started to pirate its games pretty late. And for PS2 one could buy pirate disc almost anywhere. And it was super cheap comparing to original GameCube or XBox games. But I was ok, I knew they were worth it:)
Smash bros was my first game, then came RE remake, Phantasy Star online, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2 etc. I thought I would not be able to afford all that coz I still was a teenager. Luckily my brother helped a lot and I started to have some odd jobs. And my parents helped too:)
That was probably the best times to be a gamer. The games really impressed us. It is tougher now tbh.
Ended up with about 35-50 GameCube discs. I bought almost everything I wanted back then with some omissions for I don’t know what reason:)
And yes, I am still waiting for a new F-Zero game. GX was the best driving experience in video games without considering Mario Kart.

    • @gauwoof
      @gauwoof 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh, completely forgot to mention that I loved the console design, the controllers were amazingly responsive and way more superior than what PS could have. The cables were super long and it was nice.

@@Dele83 - Yes. That was a bit of a bait and switch. I remember teenagers at Walmart were talking about the Game Cube and saying even the new Zelda is made for kids. They were just odd decisions/directions at the time. Luigis mansion as a launch title is admittedly not the strongest choice, considering the generation before started off with SM64. Likewise people wanted and were expecting a real successor to OoT that utilized the gamecube's graphic potential and instead got a cartoonish zelda game unlike any other. Again, it all worked out, and I personally loved those games even back then, but I can see where the criticisms were coming from.

In terms of representation from all of N's best franchises (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, M Kart, F-Zero, Starfox, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Smash, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion).. the GC is unmatched in its quantity and quality of these franchises. I think the Gamecube has to be my favorite console in general. I have so many fond memories playing Wind Waker, Thousand Year Door, Kirby Air Ride, Melee, etc. I loved playing Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness on Gamecube a lot, I would love if Nintendo would port those to the Switch, or even make a new game in the Orre region with shadow pokemon. Would easily be an instant buy from me.

Coming home with a black lunchbox on the day of release & a copy of Rouge Squadron, being totally blown away by the graphics.... only to get an RGB scart lead shortly after & being super impressed even more so. A lot of fun was had by Time Splitters 2, F-Zero GX, Double Dash but my absolute favourite (& still to this day) has to be Metroid Prime. And the in-game map alone was enough to knock your socks of and I don't think that it's ever been bettered. And then theres the actual game controller. Man o live was that thing comfortable in your hands. Fantastic console all round.

For a real hidden gem that I feel even Nintendo themselves constantly forgets about with next to zero mentions in Smash Bros; Battalion Wars! A spin-off from the Nintendo/Advance Wars series, it was another really interesting attempt to get an RTS working on console by mixing it with third person shooter elements through having you swap direct control between different units. It was a blast to control the vehicles (even in some dedicated driving and flying missions I loved replaying) and even the enemy factions for a few bonus missions!
(Never got to play the Wii sequel, so I have no idea how that one held up, but the GC one was a great time)

While I got a bunch of fun memories with all of my brothers with the GameCube. We were always playing 4 players games on there.
But the most unique story is when my older brother called Movie Gallery (which is basically Blockbuster) and try to see if they had Super Monkey Ball in. When he called he panicked and asked "do you have super monkey balls, the movie?" They hung up on him

Might be my favourite console of all time, which, yeah, of course also has a lot to do with my age at the time. Back then, I would still have friends over at least once every week to play Mario Kart, Mario Party, Monkey Ball, Smash, etc. But the console itself was also really powerful for its small size and while the library was tiny compared to the PS2, there were some real bangers in there. Then you had the freeloader which enabled you to play games from other regions in a really simple way (I imported Donkey Konga and Animal Crossing long before they came out in Europe).
In fact, a few years ago, we had somewhat of a Gamecube revival in one clique. We'd hang out, consume copious amounts of MJ and play Monkey Ball minigames or Wario Ware. Good times lol

I was around 2 years late to the gamecube release date but I have good memories as my parents iffered me a gamecube or an Xbox and went with GCN and i was surprised they gave me the silver gamecube with melee included. Also i have good memories of going at local BKs and playing some games that were on the playground of the restaurant, such as luigi's mansion amd even crazy taxi, and also it was around the time BK was promoting super mario sunshine with their kids meal toys. Even today i can feel smell the whopper when playing certain games today.

The Metal Gear puzzle was to put there stop people playing the game who had pirated it. Without the game box they couldn't progress (well, they could but they'd have to go through every codec option)

I really grew up with the Wii, since I was only a year old by the time the GameCube released. But the GameCube was always a part of my life since my dad kept around all the games. And I think I always gravitated toward the controller and games for this over the Wii, and now I sort of wish I could have grown up with the GC as the main Nintendo console.
Not giving up the DS though, favorite handheld by far! My childhood was devoted to that way more than the Wii!

For most consoles that have relatively disappointing sales, it's easy to see why. The Gamecube's, though, was and is kind of a mystery that I can only put down to a great desire at that pre-online subsciptions time for many gamers to have a DVD player in their console. Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4, Paper Mario - the console was a titan. There is quite an 'arcadey' , in the best way, design philosophy to the feel of the games, a close knit communal feel, a. graphic design experiment that was kind of a more userfriendly form of the Dreamcast philosophy. The games, even when adventure epics, all cut to the chase - they had to on small discs as they weren't skimping on graphical detail/effects - and were crisp, tight, focussed, elegant. Tasteful is one word you could use. Even the controller fit to. your hand in an elegant way. The DNA of the Gamecube is in the WiiU and Switch to some extent and it's pleasing to see that quality can eventually win sales long after the original Wii's buyers probably largely went somewhere else
