Elite snobs turned their nose up at Rachmaninoff, But he has the rare gift of appealing to both the novice listener and the sophisticated listener as well. I think he's fantastic!
Some random stuff about this concerto.
1. Most people don't know about this piece so they go like 'Rach had a 4th Concerto??'
2. That final section in the 1st mvt starting from 9:28 literally feels like ascending to heaven.
3. The chromatic theme in the climax of the second mvt was directly from his Etude-Tableau Op. 33 / 3.
4. This work wasn't very famous at the time, compared to his 2nd and 3rd Concertos. His Paganini written after this, was very popular though.

Great to see you react to that piece! It, along with his second and third concertos is among my favorite. As another concerto, I would recommend Barber piano concerto
Also for your question, Rach is probably my second fav composer, I would rank him very highly
Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer of all. I love all his works, but for me personally, his second concerto is the best piece of music ever written.
The 4th concert is much more difficult to understand and quite dark, but, as you said, it's still a top-level concerto!
As so often with Rachminovs works I prefer the unrevised version more. Another example where I think the unrevised version is superiour is his 2nd Piano Sonata.
I think we can say that the 4th concerto is like a transition to the modern period of Rachmaninoff, especially in the last movement. It sounds like more Shostakovich style to me.
Try his unrevised version of 1926, that version to me felt more finishedd
I love your channel and your reactions. It has caused me to relisten to many pieces, and to enjoy some for the first time as well. I can relate to the feelings you experience in many of the pieces as similar to my own when I first heard them.
More for you to consider: Copland - Appalachian Spring; Stravinsky - Firebird (there is even a clip of Stravinsky floating around conducting the lullaby of this piece himself); Gershwin - An American in Paris and Concerto in F. Richard Addinsell - Warsaw Concerto (actually written for a film but has become popular piece for orchestras to play). There are so many more, but thanks again!

Yes, I may have mentioned this one in previous comments. Also Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini and Symphonic Dances. What may not have been recommended, but is great, is The Bells.

As a composer I rank Rachmaninoff very high. Not as high as Tchaikovsky but high among the late Romantics. The problem is his output is relatively small compared to most major composers. He went long periods without composing much at all but all his works are memorable. His later works, such as this and his third symphony are more difficult. His style changed after he left Dresden. The influence of Scriabin, Prokofiev and jazz (which can be heard here if you really listen) is different from his Russian works where melody is just prominent. I think the Nikolai Medtner was a big influence too. In fact this concerto is dedicated to Medtner. Medtner in turn dedicated his second concerto to Rachmaninoff. There’s a composer to look into. Rachmaninoff called Medtner the greatest living composer.
wish he composed more, what period did he not compose? how long was it? definitely we would have much more masterpieces if he didnt take a break

Interesting. Rachmaninoff studied many of Scriabin's works in order to give concerts on the occasion of the tragic death of Alexander Nikolaevich in 1915 (around the same time he was working on the 4th concert). Prior to this event, Rachmaninoff was very skeptical about such creativity. This, among many other things, explains the rather prominent changes in the composer's style of Sergei Vasilyevich.
Tier 1. Bach. Tier 2. Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovski, Brahms, Shostakovich, Vivaldi, (Beethoven, Mozart). Tier 3. Rachmaninov, Rimsky, Ravel, Dvorak, Mendelsohn, Borodin, Haydn, Mussorgski, .....

Rachmaninoff is one of my favorite composers. The only others I can think of that I prefer are Prokofiev and maybe Mahler though unsure
1 and 5 don't have the same heft of 2 and especially 3 for me. But the opening to the first movement of 4 has that shimmery texture I've never heard anywhere else.
I recommend you listen to Shostakovich's Concerto for Piano and Trumpet by Martha Argerich :)
Rachmaninoff is definitely top-tier. Whether he surpasses Chopin or Liszt is just one's preference though.
Considering only the 1900's or the late Romantic period, Rach is definitely top-tier along with Scriabin, Mahler, etc. Maybe Debussy and Ravel for Impressionism.
I like Liszt but Rach is a very close second.
I rank Rachmaninoff as 2nd after Chopin

Rachmaninoff struggled with this one, there are so many versions of the concerto, he rewrote a lot. I think he cut some nice passages of music for this last version.. I made a hybrid version on youtube connecting the original version and this one. If you interested just search Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 4 hybrid version
