Thanks for this great video on how to tie banded hooklengths. I can now tie my own banded hooklengths with confidence, honestly, your video is very informative and easy to follow. Being new to tying these hooklengths, after only a couple of tries, i had got them coming out where i was more than happy with them. I did find tying the figure of 8 knot a little fiddly, but watching you do it, has made it easier, even for my sausage fingers. Thank you :)
Very informative, I use a fly tying vice to grip the hooks as it saves a lot of fiddling about. May help if you are new to tying your own rigs, they are not expensive and save time. :)
Michael Smith, the third letter denotes the wire gauge on Preston’s hooks. ; KKM is a Medium gauge hook. SFL is a Light gauge hook. Etc.... Hope this helps.
i can't believe iv'e just seen the easiest way ever to tie the figure of eight knot, ive always just done the normal double loop,as all other methods iv'e seen to tie the 8 seem awkward.thank you very much Des
Hi Des, great vid as always, would mention that you explain that we should add the line to the eye of the hook from back to front and then at the end you say that we must come back through the eye in the opposite direction but you then say that your threading the line from “back to front”.......you might want to re-edit this section of the vid as it’s misleading to a novice who might have trouble with his hook length unravelling etc!
Its not misleading its simply incorrect! I've posted about this a few times but Preston Innovation seem to be simply ignoring the mistake (and our posts pointing it out). Des is generally excellent but this video is wrong!
I love the mag stick system Des... However do you mke replacement hooks without the mag stick.? Otherwise we will end up with loads of spare mag sticks.
Just a second. Des starts off after tying the band on by passing the line through the BACK to the front of the hook. Then after doing the loops he says go the OPPOSITE way and once again he goes through the BACK to the front of the hook. I am totally confused! Have I misunderstood or has Des made an error?
Preston Innovation and/or Des - please respond. I've lost loads of fish and wasted hooks and bands copying Des's video exactly and its seems to be wrong and causing my hooks to untie when they come under pressure (I test them all first but its never the same as when you hook a fish).
Pass the line through the back of the hook then start your wrapping then pass it through the back again not through the front! I think he just got words mixed up
@@tombodden5066 Cheers Tom - I'm knew to this and followed Des's every word and its cost me a few fish and hooks over several weeks! I agree having watched other videos that he made a mistake with just one word - but its an important word and this video should be edited. I'm not a pedant honest but if its wrong its wrong. If I were Preston Innovations I'd aplogise and be offering me a pack for pointing the mistake out!
Des as I said in an earlier post I tie my own with watching your video. the problem I have with the MAG system I find your band to big for 4m pellets don't get me wrong as i said i do tie my own. I thought I would mention that to you, Tight Lines Des ,

I think you are confusing yourself. What Des says and does are both correct. He first puts the line through from the back to the front but then he slides the hook to the other end of the hooklength. When he looks at it in this position the line is passing through from the front of the hook to the back, where the hair needs to be, because he is now looking at the line going in the opposite direction to what he threaded it in! The rest of what he says is quite clear. If you are losing fish it may be because you are winding the line around the hooks in the wrong direction. It's important that you don't wind towards the gap formed between the end of the eye wire and the shank. Watch a video of someone tying the knot on a big carp hook to see what I mean, like at 2:20 on this video th-cam.com/video/gcUDaLoMPzs/w-d-xo.html
@@oldbloke135 Thanks - that video is much clearer. I appreciate your response but whatever way you look at it (and I've watch Des's video again and again) he clearly says you thread the line back through the eye in the opposite direction and that is wrong as on both occasions it goes from the back to the front. It doesn't matter how you hold the hook the opposite direction is always the opposite direction and its wrong. I have sussed it out now and once again, thanks very much.
Doesn't bending the hooklength (e.g 12 inch hooklength on 6 inch plastic insert) damage it? I used to make my own for carp fishing, and the line always deformed and memorized the bent, causing it to tangle when casting.
Hi. I am wondering are these hooklenghts for pole fishing or method feeder fishing? Usually the lenght for method are 8-10 cm. But these 15 are a bit long.
Des makes a mistake in this video so be careful. Its a simple but important error when passing the line through the eye for the last time he says pass it through the 'opposite' way (originally it was passed from the back to the front). This is wrong as it should go the SAME way i.e. from the back to the front a second time. I'm knew to this and followed Des's every word and its cost me a few fish and hooks over several weeks and I couldn't work out what I was doing wrong! Having watched other videos I now realise that he made a mistake with just one word - but its an important word and this video should be edited. I'm not a pedant, honest, but if its wrong its wrong. If I were Preston Innovations I'd apologise and be offering me a pack for pointing the mistake out and wasting my money on lost hooks and bands!
ive been having so many problems with the preston 4in pretied banded hooklengths, they just keep snapping or the hook comes off, i get a bite, the rod tip bends round, i lift the rod and start playing the fish in, after about 20/30 secs the line just goes slack, i wind the feeder in and find theres no hook on the end, just a bit of curly line, they also snap about 8/10mm under the loop knot, i went through 2 whole mag lock sticks of them ( 16 hook lengths ) in one session, every one snapped or the hook came off.
Are you using the correct breaking strains to match your rod? With the line being such a short length it has minimal stretch when means if you're not using a soft enough rod it could cause breakages.

I now tie my own hooks and find it very therapeutic. tight lines Des,
Another fab video Des we'll explained of how to tie your own hooklengths all the same length.

BOTH passes are through the back

A perfectly simplified tuition.
Thanks Des!
Brilliant Des . Great tutorial .
Love those mag boxes
Is there a reference guide available for all the initials. KKM, GPM, R2D2, CP3O etc ?
I use an old fly tieing vice as my fingers are arthritic. It leaves both hands free.

Hold the hook in a fly tying vice..leaves both hands free ...makes life very simple
Could Preston now make a 3" hook length box please?
The blue hooklength boxes we do fit 3"
And the absolute all round

Can you give us the name of the printer machine for the labels?
I'll give you the name of the *printer machine* it's a (Dymo LabelManager 160 Label Maker) 🎉 £4 for the information lol

There is a kink but simply running your fingers over it removes the kink.
What does KKM GPM etc stand for please anyone thanks
Knotless Knot Medium & General Purpose Match 😎
@@UKprestoninnovations thank you that's makes perfect sense now 🥂
nice....
Another great vid! Really helpful to me! Just wondering how you tie your rig to your Hooklength?
A simple loop to loop connection is best.
How About preston start making a hooklength trying machine one that is smarter and simple to use

These are for pole fishing. But the same process applies for method feeder, just make them shorter.
I wish Prestons would put an index to their hook codes, they don't mean a thing to me. Wire diameter like line dia would be more useful.
The third letter in the name indicates the wire gauge. SFL-B - Silverfish Light as an example. Hope this helps.
Purrfect again Des👍apart from saying the passing of line in opposite directions thro' the eye...schoolboy error?

@@UKprestoninnovations the line recommended for the rod is 8lb / 10lb and im using 8lb line, so i would say, yes im using the right line for the rod.
