I have tried this method, but I don't like how the finished seam looks on the wrong side. It doesn't look nice. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong.

It should look like a row of serged stitching on the back. If not, maybe something is not threaded right. Your local sewing machine store can help if you think something is wrong.
