    Great demo. Sergers are great tools. I've been enjoying getting reconnected with mine. Sergers (and coverstitch machines) are often intimidating. In addition to the threading (for those of us with no airfeed!) the tension can be fiddly for beginners until it becomes second nature. And they are so darn fast. A nice quality machine will last a lifetime. My is 30 years old.

    Very helpful video! Thank you! I have never used my serger for gathering or applying elastic. Any chance of a future video on applying elastic with a serger? Love your videos and your patterns!

      There is an elasticator foot that helps with this task.

    This is amazing! I have been gathering by hand using my sewing machine not knowing I could just use my serger to do this! Thank you!

      Try holding the top fabric and let the bottom fabric slide through. It does take a little practice

    Wow thank you for the tutorial
    Curious do you know if this special technique would work on jersey knit fabrics??
    Thank you 😊

      Yes it will. Just practice on scrap fabric pieces

    Will this work on stretch fabric?

    If I want to do the option where it gathers and attaches to another non gathered fabric how do I make sure the gathered section and the non gathered section will be the same length in the end? Do I just double the length of the gathered fabric while leaving the non gathered fabric at the length I want the finished piece at?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I recommend do some test runs. Every machine and different types of fabric will give you different results. You get hang of it when praciting holding the two fabrics.

    Fantastic tutorial! Now I understand why the overlock/serger is really helpfull and why I should buy one if I want to learn sewing one day. If you have a overlock/serger machine can you also do exact the same stitches as using a regular sewing machine?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. The sewing machine can do a lot more stitches

    All these years I have never used my serger for anything but binding edges. It came with several extra feet but never watched the VHS tape.. shows how long I have had a top of the line Seeger.. that shows how to use. Now I am curious, thanks Jan.

    Great video, thank you. How do you know what setting to use for gathering? For example, to join two tiers of a gathered skirt, where the width of the pattern pieces is important? Does 2 mean twice as gathered and 1.5 mean one and a half times gathered?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about the differential feed? I'm not sure about those settings 2 and 1.5. You can always test it on a scrap piece of fabric.

    If you gather two pieces together, like you would a top to a skirt, can you loosen/tighten it if you end up with the skirt not matching ? Great video, thank you!

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use the gathering foot to sew onto a flat piece of fabric you have to unpick to adjust. It takes a little practice to get it to end up exactly the same length. I would do a test piece using scrap fabric the length of your project. You'll get so you can hold the under piece and kinda feel how much to hold back so it comes out even. I hope that was helpful.

    Jan, do you know how to use a coverstitch machine? You teach so well, I'd love to see you do some tutorials for beginners if you have the wisdom! I bought a coverstitch machine, and it terrifies me! Love this gathering technique too, thank you. :D

    That was a great demo, I especially like the foot that gathers on the bottom fabric and sews the top. Neat. I just purchased a serger, and have just started experimenting with it. To me, the trick will be to be able to gather the lower hem of a sleeve to the exact length to add a cuff. It seems to me that may take a bit of experimenting with the differential setting in order to get the correct amount of gather that will match up with the cuff. Any thoughts here? I noted from your video that you can use the middle needle thread to adjust the gather. Is that how you would accomplish?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it takes a little practice. I recommend testing the gathering before sewing on your project. It gets easier the more you practice. Yes, you can use that middle thread to adjust if needed.

    When you attach & gather at the same time, how can you make sure the bottom fabric would gather to the length of the top fabric?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Practice on some scrap fabrics to know how much you machine gathers. Mine is about 50% so I make the fabric I'm gathering twice as long. It just takes a little practice.

    I have the exact same machine. I followed your directions. Even took the thread out & retreaded everything 3 times to make sure it was correct. Made sure it runs a perfect chain stitch in regular settings with the regular foot. I made sure the fabric was underneath the gathering foot. Still just a straight chain. It’s just a piece of cotton broadcloth so nothing too thick or too thin. I even tried adjusting the foot pressure knob. Still straight no gathering. What am I doing wrong?

    • @JanHowell
      @JanHowell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that I can think of that is going on, is that you're holding the fabric too tight and not letting it feed through without any resistance. That is so strange. You are using the gathering foot, right? Did you adjust the settings like I explain in the video? Let me know if you get it to work.

    • @lisacobb7525
      @lisacobb7525 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JanHowell I think I figured it out. No I’m just guiding the fabric not holding firmly and I set everything exactly as you showed step by step. I was watching the video again and noticed that the piece on the bottom of your foot is much lower than mine. That extra piece that sort of hangs down? Yours had a bigger gap between the top and bottom of the foot. Where you would feed that fabric that wouldn’t be gathered. I pulled it down and it seems to work. It doesn’t gather as much as I would like but it did gather. I’m scared to pull too much. Don’t want to bend the foot. The metal must have been compressed in storage. Maybe a tip for us newbies. Thanks!
