As an ardent Kiwi AB supporter living in Queensland I must say that gesture and the response were the best I have seen in 80 yrs of watching rugby. Congratulations to Australia. Not only a great, appropriate gesture but it placed the Wallabies right into the Haka.

Being a Pom, what is the significance of the Aussies presenting the All blacks a boomerang?

    • @bobmoore7481
      @bobmoore7481 ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@Matt-yq4zr the Haka has been done by the AB for over 100yrs. Opposition teams don’t always know how to respond.
Some have turned their backs , some have stepped up in confrontation. Most just stand there in bewildered acceptance.
The Haka is a challenge. Australia’s move to offer the boomerang meant three things. One, it demonstrated they were not intimidated by the Haka or the All Blacks. Two, it showed a level of respect. And thirdly, it placed them directly into the ceremony.

My favourite account of facing the All Black Haka of all time - Peter Fitzsimmons 🙂
...and then you’d file out of the dark tunnel, out into the light, massive roar of the crowd and you’d stand to face what I still think is the finest sight you can see on any sports field anywhere in the world - which is to stand and face the All Black Haka.
And that particular day, on the last test match that I played, was in fact down in Christchurch and Zinzan Brooke was the leader on the day for the Haka.
He stood in the middle with the All Blacks round in a semi circle behind him and he started in on that blood curdling cry “Heeeeeeee” and the 14 behind him “ ā ka mate ka mate ka ora”.
And there’s these verbal waves of violence crashing over you while you’re standing there with your 14 brothers, with your arms around them in your green and gold, and they’re screaming at you.
I always used to watch Zinzan’s eyes and notice how they would throb in unison to the veins in his neck.
it always seemed to me like Zinzan’s eyes were totally un-seeing until they came to me, then they would start to focus and turn over like jack-pots on a pokie machine...ding ding, ding ding, ding ding...he’s mine.
They’d be screaming “ka mate ka mate” and you’d be there with your 14 brothers looking back at them, trying to communicate to them how ‘superbly unimpressed’ you were.
You’d be looking at them like “ohhh, you poor pricks”...
What you were actually thinking was “Oh- My- God”.

You do know that the gesture (response with the Boomerang) was arranged prior to the Test. Yes it was a classy response to the Haka - a great response to the challenge. And the class goes both ways. From the Aussies for respecting the Haka and responding in this positive way … and also to the All Blacks for agreeing to that response and showing respect to the Aussies gesture in kind. After seeing so much ignorance and contempt from the mainly 6 nation teams and crowds towards the Haka - the Aussie/All Blacks solution was beautiful. Maybe the northern hemisphere lot will grow up and do better now? (Haha yeah right.)

The ANZACS have the most unusual, unique relationship in rugby. If we lose to England or ths Bokkies there's always a bitter angry feeling. We haven't won the Bledisloe since 2002, but we only have respect. There is no shame or anger (just frustration). Caxton St after a NZ Aus test is an incredible atmosphere

This was a great haka. Made me think of a cultural unity and how NZ and Aussie are a mix of cultures. My thoughts on the haka is that it represents asking for help. Some people can defend the goal line by making a tackle. Some can even push a player back from the line, though this is very rare. Some will have to fall with the tackle and hold a player up. Though some people simply can't defend the line. These people require assistance in a time of need. So the haka ultimately represents these people. The Kingdom of David is where the party is at. People work for money and pay tax. With money and gifts people enter the stadium or bar or festival. Black represents something permanent. Something worth protecting. Yellow is something golden or special, also something worth protecting. This weekend the All Blacks play The Wallabies in Dunedin, a great place for a party.

I went to NZ at 17 years old, met a mauri tribe who performed the haka right in my face with spears, tongues and everything. Very intimidating as you have to keep a straight face and try not to offend them. Afterwards they cooked a feast in a big pit and shown us their traditions. Very cool people.
