Staraptor holds a special place in my heart, as my first run of Diamond was basically a staraptor solo. Knew this run would be a cinch, nothing gets in this bird's way!

Now that you’re on platinum, looking forward to Chatot! 😂 curious if yours will use the infamous chatter lol. 😁one of my absolute favorites. Not as good as staraptor, of course lol (and well done, by the way!) Story as to why Chatot: I imagine the little guy like a cheery bard, traveling, collecting and sharing stories with people and Pokémon. Also, if I were in Hisui/Sinnoh, I would love to have a little chatot on my shoulder while I worked as an apothecary/ chef, telling me what the Pokémon patients need (and explaining what I’m doing for them) and entertaining both people and Pokémon patients and passerby’s with some stories we’ve collected along our travels.
I know that the schedule will change in January, though i wanted to say I've been enjoying the daily uploads since i got a new job a week before Christmas. I have to drive an hour every morning, and the videos has helped me to wake up and mentally prepare for the day. I know this isn't anything particularly special, but still wanted to thank you.
A long time ago I owned this orphaned sparrow that really liked Starly's cry and would chirp back at it every time I or a trainer sent one out. I miss my little Turdybird. I can't not use a Starly whenever I play Platinum now because of her. (It helps that it's a strong cool birb)
I just want to say this has been my favorite series by far, Scott! I played gen 4 on repeat back in the day so I have a lot of nostalgia for Platinum. Seeing you do these runs really makes my inner kid really happy :) Can’t wait for future episodes!
Staraptor is a total beast, as expected. And I'm glad you've been having a good time with Platinum, I totally understand the apprehension when you see things like Blissey health bars being depleted over the course of roughly a century but it's one of my favorites in spite of its warts. Recoil moves are definitely going to be your friend in 4th gen, as they introduced a lot of really good type-based ones. Wood Hammer, Flare Blitz, Brave Bird... And then there's Head Smash which is even stronger, but also only has 80% accuracy. It's kinda funny to me that we have all these powerful moves introduced here but they never bothered to buff Submission's base power. Although, Close Combat is infinitely better anyways.
Honestly, I'm not too surprised Starapror dominated after the first gym. It's movepool is disgustingly broken! As always, excellent job, Scott and Team!
Wouldn't say disgustingly broken. It's relatively shallow but it has what it needs and gets great type coverage in very few moves. Not to mention its stat distribution being just right. More Special Defense would've been good though.
@@ShiningJudgment666 Fair enough. I typically stick with the first two generations and their remakes when replaying old Pokémon games. Gen 4 (Platinum, specifically) is one that I only replayed maybe twice, so I only remember so much from there.
Staraptor is also one of those Pokémon from Gen 4 you feel like you just HAVE to use from early on the game I know as a kid I always had one on my team, thanks for the great content as always
You kind of just catch the regional bird for the sake of it, fully expecting to drop it at some point during the game. Then this thing comes along and carries your team right to the end of the game haha. Staraptor is the reason that people still get excited for the potential of birds at all in these games.
Scott I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying Platinum even will all it’s flaws! I’d be interested in seeing what a Solo Challenge would look like without rare candies as well. Thanks for all the videos this December!
The amount and quality of your content this year has been really great, enjoy your well deserved break in the new year! Hoping some favorites like Sandslash, Walrein and my dude Huntail get runs in 2024 (Huntail vs Gorebyss overlooked water type vs. perhaps?)
I've been watching your content so much lately, it only makes sense to subscribe lol love the videos and the breakdown of stats! From one Canadian to another, keep at 'er, bud! lol
I feel another reason why Staraptor beat Infernape also has to do with move sets and I'm not just talking about coverage. Every time you drastically change a Pokemon's moves it takes a little bit of time and when you do it frequently it eats up precious seconds maybe even minutes all together. Staraptor had more or less its final move set the second it fully evolved only swapping out one move for Brave Bird. Also Staraptor relied soley on raw power never wasting turns setting up.
Imagine what a monster staraptor would be in crystal. Glad you’re enjoying platinum, it’s arguably the best game in the series in terms of actual quality and pacing
It's fun to have done runs with Luxray and Staraptor, because of how common they are to peoples sinnoh teams. It'd be cool to see Pokémon like gastrodon and roserade because of how often you see them around, cresselia will definitely be an interesting one though!
MURDERBIRD. MURDERBIRD. MURDERBIRD. We love Staraptor in this house. It's the best in-game regional bird. What an amazing Nuzlocke pokemon. The Pokedex entries suggest that Staraptor is one of the most violent predators and fearless fighters in the Pokemon world, so it makes sense that it's a cornerstone of every single Sinnoh nuzlocke.
Staraptor did about as well as I expected. It IS a beast. Close Combat is one hell of a drug for this kind of pokemon, one that improves their performance a lot. And yeah, don't fear the recoil attacks. Respect them, use them sparsely, so you don't waste time healing or resetting, but don't fear them. If you are going to need healing, getting a bit of recoil damage is better than getting a lot of damage done by your opponent. Cresselia, huh? I gotta admit I never used it, and I have used even Darkrai. That's going to be an interesting run, and one I'll go blind watching it.
My thought is if something learns double team by level up and has issues with the first gym it should be allowed to use it as long as it's overwritten after that (may not need to be deleted but that at least keeps it fair for the rest of the run and keeps things competitive and in line with their level up sets) But at the end of the day, what you think is fair is all that matters. Cheers! Love the vids
22:58 Yes, absolutely! I also think Flare Blitz would have improved your Infernape time, for example, as Fire coverage is quite good for a few mons for which you didn't have any, and Close Combat was pretty much always doing more than Earthquake anyway; I totally get being averse to using recoil moves, since you're really focused on solo challenges, but yeah, as Benjamin said, by being afraid of the recoil, you're not using a resource of yours (HP) and leaving a lot of power on the table.
I'm loving the Platinum series so far I can't for you to get o all the new gen 4 evos to see out they stack up against their older selves from previous games!
This generation feels more like a Gym Leader Battle Compilation than anything else. The elite four aren't even exciting because of the huge over-leveling in solo-'mon challenges. :/ That said, the effort put into these videos still shows, of course. Keep it up! ♪
Long post, sorry, just 4 points Staraptor is Gamefreak taking a good idea of Swellow and making it better. Today we learnt, Endeavour is a poor move in a solo run, you are never gonna to knock the opponent out and i believe it's meant to weaken the opponent for your next Pokémon to grab the KO. I guess Scott didn't need to do this, but i was screaming at my screen "YOU HAVE ROOST TO OFFSET BRAVE BIRD'S RECOIL" That comment about your Pokémon's HP as a resource for more damage, that's a philosophy from many games, notable to me is Yu-Gi-Oh, "Life Points don't matter except your last one" Thank you for reading.
Oh my God, are you ending with Cresselia and Darkrai? The full moon and new moon Pokemon? I thought we'd have to wait years for more Darkrai! I'm so hype for this!!!
something i hope to see, particularly after you're back from vacation, is a platinum run with an early gen mon that suffered from a lack of good stab pre phys/spec split, like Kingler or Crawdaunt
Despite its type, Cranidos is frail. Just attacking it is often the right move. Growl isn't much of an answer to Roark given Screech Onix. I did my Staraptor run before realizing just how potent late-game Rare Candies are, so I couldn't take such an offensive approach. Brave Bird and Close Combat made me unable to handle five Pokemon in a row. I ended up using Roost and Fly. The AI can't predict your change in type, so Roost is amazing against Pokemon with Rock, Electric, or Ice moves. It'll be great for Flying-types with less raw damage output.
My initial impression is that this generation is “harder” but because of the abundance of rare candies you are actually pretty unlikely to get stuck, particularly in the late game. Because of this I expect the finish times to be somewhat close to each other.
I've always named my Staraptor's Sergeant Merrick, after a character from Dawn of War: Retribution, an Imperial Guardsman who roars about the thousands of guardsmen who died, with the retort from his commander being "A guardsmans life is to die." That is my view of Staraptors. A Staraptor's LIFE is to die. It is a trainer's duty to bring it to where it CAN die. They are the wings which bear the team on its back, the suicide scout, the force of fury recklessly disregarding its own well being to ensure victory.
This bird was really impressive! I was quite surprised when it got Close Combat upon evolving it to Staraptor in my first playthrough of Diamond and it's been a staple on my teams since. If only it had access to the Steel Wing TM for Roark.
Gen 3 regional bird should be swellow, if u think bout it from the anime wise ash has used the regional bird of every region till gen7 so yeah Also looking forward to the god bibarel run for plat, that seems fun with the simple ability
I had a feeling Staraptor would excel. Gen 4 in many ways kind of feels like the first time they really started designing most pokemon to succeed. They don't always get it right, but you can see it in the vastly improved movepools, the more min-maxed stat distributions, and of course the physical/special split relieving so many pokemon of the burdens of mismatched types/stats.
5:36 If you have at least 2 Pokemon in your Party, the AI likes to set up entry hazards like Stealth Rock. If the player only has a single Pokemon, the AI will never use Stealth Rock at all.
I am not all the way through so not sure if it was adressed, but the move list shows TM01 Whirlpool, which it shouldn't learn I believe. Just wanted to give a notice incase there are some other issues with the overlay that might want to be tackled. :)
Werster did a speedrun where he caught a Starly as his main mon for the run and got within a few minutes of the Any% world record. He relied on Double Team for Roark though!
You said Endeavor is new to gen 4 but it was in gen 3 too, at least according to Serebii. The descriptions are different but I think it does the same thing.
I don’t know if it is the case but whenever I played DPP that the trainers would always somehow predict how I switch so I get hit by a good move most the time, so it could be the case that the trainers in the gym try and check if you might switch and try and predict what you might have, though you could say anything for it
If you're doing a Cresselia run, do you think you'll do a Darkrai run? And since you did the University Magikarp run in Yellow, would you consider doing a run with the Toys R' Us event Darkrai?
Staraptor's just got the right stats in the right places and just Fighting and Flying alone is great type coverage. Normal being added to it is good too since it gets STAB on Return. Brave Bird being a strong STAB attack is great too. Roark as expected was a roadblock but beyond that, damn it's good.
If thought Whirlwind might be useful for Roark, couldn't you hold off on teaching Return, keep Quick Attack until Roark, replace Quick Attack with Whirlwind for that battle, and then replace Whirlwind with Return afterwards?
I’m pretty sure Swellow got endeavour?! In gen 3?! Also gen 3 has 2 regional birds, a land based one and a water based one! That’s also likely why they both evolve early
I think Staraptor is still going to be insanely better when it starts out as a staraptor. It can probably get away with a ton less grinding against roark due to its improved stats.
The ratatta strat originally appeared by a Poketuber named marriland fun fact he’s the first TH-camr that played Pokémon in gen 4 specifically Pokémon diamond Also man Berthas Gliscor looks weird It can definitely fly with its big chunky legs and tusk it’s the new venomoth
Anyone notice that on the learnset on the overlay it said that starly could learn whirlpool? Lol Im glad to see some gen 4 runs as there arent as many of them as the forst three gens
For the coming year, I'd like to see you dip into Platinum runs with Pokémon that have lower statlines. So maybe we'll soon get to see you play the Kricketot line - Kricketune is severely less powerful than those starters and pseudo-starters, but it has a decent Attack stat, a proper STAB in X-Scissor and some reasonable coverage options, so it's hardly awful.

There are a few items introduced that will be nice to have in mind for later playthrough of other Pokemon, Choice Specs being one that you can get in Celestia Town or Metronome even in the Veilstone Game Corner (Which in the E4 if you are spamming one move, will help you with ranges)
Now that you’re on platinum, looking forward to Chatot! 😂 curious if yours will use the infamous chatter lol.
😁one of my absolute favorites. Not as good as staraptor, of course lol (and well done, by the way!)
Story as to why Chatot: I imagine the little guy like a cheery bard, traveling, collecting and sharing stories with people and Pokémon.
Every Gen 4 playthrough I do, this bird ends up on my team. It's usually very impressive, too.
You kind of just catch the regional bird for the sake of it, fully expecting to drop it at some point during the game. Then this thing comes along and carries your team right to the end of the game haha.
Staraptor is the reason that people still get excited for the potential of birds at all in these games.
@@kode-man23a similar situation with early bugs happens in gen 5 ESPECIALLY the scollipede line.
@@octosage2861 Scollipede is GOATed. I was so happy that bugs in Unova were beyond “just usable” and were actually good.
Scott I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying Platinum even will all it’s flaws! I’d be interested in seeing what a Solo Challenge would look like without rare candies as well. Thanks for all the videos this December!
really enjoying the platinum series so far, keep it up! you also seem to be playing pretty good for not being experienced with it.
The amount and quality of your content this year has been really great, enjoy your well deserved break in the new year!
Hoping some favorites like Sandslash, Walrein and my dude Huntail get runs in 2024 (Huntail vs Gorebyss overlooked water type vs. perhaps?)
Staraptor is the main reason that close combat is my favorite fighting type move of all time.
Shedinja profile pic spotted
Very cool 😎
CC is just a good move in general
I'm glad you addressed why you picked that nickname. In the UK it's very funny, nearly choked on my drink XD
The Pokedex entries suggest that Staraptor is one of the most violent predators and fearless fighters in the Pokemon world, so it makes sense that it's a cornerstone of every single Sinnoh nuzlocke.
i'm sorry you've made this many pokemon videos and never heard of FEAR? endeavor sturdy aron with shell bell?
Staraptor did about as well as I expected. It IS a beast. Close Combat is one hell of a drug for this kind of pokemon, one that improves their performance a lot. And yeah, don't fear the recoil attacks. Respect them, use them sparsely, so you don't waste time healing or resetting, but don't fear them. If you are going to need healing, getting a bit of recoil damage is better than getting a lot of damage done by your opponent.
Cresselia, huh? I gotta admit I never used it, and I have used even Darkrai. That's going to be an interesting run, and one I'll go blind watching it.
My thought is if something learns double team by level up and has issues with the first gym it should be allowed to use it as long as it's overwritten after that (may not need to be deleted but that at least keeps it fair for the rest of the run and keeps things competitive and in line with their level up sets)
But at the end of the day, what you think is fair is all that matters. Cheers! Love the vids
It's just a guaranteed win tho
Small correction but Endeavor is a move that was introduced in Gen III actually. It's learned by the Swellow line actually!
Staraptor sweep baby.
I’m loving this series! It’s been so long since I’ve played Gen 4.
This generation feels more like a Gym Leader Battle Compilation than anything else. The elite four aren't even exciting because of the huge over-leveling in solo-'mon challenges. :/
That said, the effort put into these videos still shows, of course. Keep it up! ♪
Happy to see my favorite Pokemon get covered 💙
Love the Platinum play through. Looking forward to Lucario!
BIRD POWER! I love Starraptor! Best bird! If your bird can beat you up with CLOSE COMBAT, then you might as well give up. So happy with the results!
All i can think of is how excited ill be in 3 or so years when Scott starts on Gen 5 playthroughs 🤩
Finally an early bird that actually flies through the game :D
Long post, sorry, just 4 points
Staraptor is Gamefreak taking a good idea of Swellow and making it better.
Today we learnt, Endeavour is a poor move in a solo run, you are never gonna to knock the opponent out and i believe it's meant to weaken the opponent for your next Pokémon to grab the KO.
I guess Scott didn't need to do this, but i was screaming at my screen "YOU HAVE ROOST TO OFFSET BRAVE BIRD'S RECOIL"
That comment about your Pokémon's HP as a resource for more damage, that's a philosophy from many games, notable to me is Yu-Gi-Oh, "Life Points don't matter except your last one"
Thank you for reading.
Was waiting on this one. Hope it turns out good because i love staraptor
Healing Moves and Double edge type moves synergize very well. Roost and Brave Bird
Cant wait to see you do a Palkia Yellow Backport and crush Mewtwos time.
I cannot wait to see you eventually solo run this game with a Floatzel as that is basically what i did as a kid. It worked though
22:45 something glitched out on your overlay there man. might wanna check that out ;)
Despite its type, Cranidos is frail.
Huh. So Scott thinks that Pelipper is the Gen 3 Regional Birb rather than Swellow, interesting 🤔
I'm hoping for the near-mythical Carnivine! I didn't even know it existed for a very long time.
Staraptor: The bird that could fight anything.
This bird was really impressive! I was quite surprised when it got Close Combat upon evolving it to Staraptor in my first playthrough of Diamond and it's been a staple on my teams since. If only it had access to the Steel Wing TM for Roark.
Taillow: "Am I a joke to you?"
Guts Swellow is amazing in solo runs, once you gain access to an Aroma Lady to rematch for re-poisoning.
Hopping your last video for a month is bidoof, the meme/god Pokémon
Gen 3 regional bird should be swellow, if u think bout it from the anime wise ash has used the regional bird of every region till gen7 so yeah
Also looking forward to the god bibarel run for plat, that seems fun with the simple ability
I remember seeing Pikachu runs that required luck for Byron even at level 100, some pokemon are going to get absolutely walled there
yikes thats gonna be rough
I had a feeling Staraptor would excel. Gen 4 in many ways kind of feels like the first time they really started designing most pokemon to succeed. They don't always get it right, but you can see it in the vastly improved movepools, the more min-maxed stat distributions, and of course the physical/special split relieving so many pokemon of the burdens of mismatched types/stats.
Halfway through the video and all ive seen is birb go bop with massive returns lol
Correction: Pelliper is NOT the regional bird for Hoenn, that would be Swellow.
You probably making good money posting every day but that shit must be tiring, regardless thanks for more videos lol
I love Staraptor and it has being my favorite regional bird since I first played Pearl.
I want Staraptor to have a new regional form that's rock/flying with rock head for its ability :D
That sounds hilariously broken, the only thing stopping that from demolishing everything in sight would be Head Smash's shaky accuracy.
Werster did a speedrun where he caught a Starly as his main mon for the run and got within a few minutes of the Any% world record.
He relied on Double Team for Roark though!
I can't wait for Scott to figure out abilities and how to use them best with all of the starters and do some more speedrun strats
An absolutely fantastic run for such a poor Roark time.
You said Endeavor is new to gen 4 but it was in gen 3 too, at least according to Serebii. The descriptions are different but I think it does the same thing.
I don’t know if it is the case but whenever I played DPP that the trainers would always somehow predict how I switch so I get hit by a good move most the time, so it could be the case that the trainers in the gym try and check if you might switch and try and predict what you might have, though you could say anything for it
This is my favorite bird in the entire franchise
Staraptor is my fav, flying type at the beginning .
Also called Regional Birds
If you're doing a Cresselia run, do you think you'll do a Darkrai run? And since you did the University Magikarp run in Yellow, would you consider doing a run with the Toys R' Us event Darkrai?
Starly is adorable, and I usually kept it's evolutionary line on my team all the way through the game.
Can`t wait for Eeveelution showdown on gen IV.
You shoul do ALL 7 in one vs video! It`d be epic!
The low HP Hype!!!HYPE!!!! Dennis would be proud
This guy doesn't stop!
Guts Swellow: Am I a joke to you?
I encourage the Piggott with submissions run. That bird is big and could definitely pin someone with its claws.
The ratatta strat originally appeared by a Poketuber named marriland fun fact he’s the first TH-camr that played Pokémon in gen 4 specifically Pokémon diamond
Also man Berthas Gliscor looks weird It can definitely fly with its big chunky legs and tusk it’s the new venomoth
Wouldn't reckless be a better ability since every battle has an extra text box with intimidate
For Diamond and Pearl, my main pair to beat the ENTIRE game was the Turtwig and Starly lines, with appropriate HM Mules.
Another video to watch while waiting on Porygon 2 vs Porygon z
Anyone notice that on the learnset on the overlay it said that starly could learn whirlpool? Lol
Im glad to see some gen 4 runs as there arent as many of them as the forst three gens
Roark will need Sing cheese, and maybe Bide strats, tho
