Ive been watching a few of your videos on whistle voice and you might be the one of the few who able to explain it with technical knowledge and with complete demonstration. Thank you so much!! I kinda get some of it out but it's still bad on exhaling haha I get it easily on inhaling but I dont wanna make it a habit because I know it's not good
At 2:51 a car outside with squeaky brakes was stopping at the same time. I was like, how is she doin that in stereo like that? Then the car stopped and I realized what just happened lol. Thank you. I have put this practice on hold, until could have way better control over my voice. I think I'm ready now lol.
I must be grateful for the wonderful delivery, your content is very substantial and I treasure it, it helps me a lot to sharpen my tenor register ... greetings from South America ...
Love this video!!! Any tips for exercises to do once we've found the whistle register in order to strengthen it?? This is for those of us pop singers who want to use it :)
Hi @Aubergina .... YES! I absolutely do, but they are highly unique depending on your registration. I’m happy to offer a Free Vocal Consultation. If you’re interested, send me an email at julia@voicewithjulia.com and I will send you a link to my calendar 😊
I just learned how to get my whistle to start two days ago and I didn’t know anything about how to make it go and every one of your exercises made it made it go a little bit Then right after watching your video and because I knew what pitch to get to because of your video cause I really didn’t know exactly where my whistle range was until This video showed me. I been ain’t able to get it to go at all when I get into my whistle even though it would make me laugh. I mean it if I let it make me scream, I could whistle a little bit but after the video and seeing different ways to set it off I was singing in Smule or StarMaker and all things Metallica nothing. Else matters on an orchestra version, and I was in my head voice going all over the place and all of a sudden I started feeling funny and I the pressure usually around my nose on both sides of it suddenly went to the outside of my cheeks. My throat got really loose and I started feeling my back vocal cord fixing to try to work which I mean I’ve been Been feeling that in the last couple days since I could start the whistle, so I kinda knew what was going on is like I was staring at them but god that was an intense. Adrenaline rush me and I cursed a little bit and felt like I sucked in several notes and pressure and I choked again and cursed again and then I whistled everything that I just said there’s like screaming whistles like I was crying and laughing by the end of it. It was awesome! O I whistled “ohhhh! F*^**. Ohhhh s***! Ahhhh probably for 15 or 20 seconds. It triggered when I screamed though because i’m guessing the compounds are body uses in the case of fear and overwhelming happiness, or astonishment, or what really took over there, but that had not freaking done your video. I wouldn’t have been broke enough to do that probably I did that a couple more times afterwards though, I’m trying to keep it off the swearwords and obviously not as many words if I’m going to scream myself into it, that’s not really the goal here I’d rather be able to talk tomorrow lol
When we got to the beaker from the muppets / minnie voice i got depressed because i already have been doing that assuming it was a head voice thing and that means that's probably as high as i can go. Guess I'll never hit that Mike Patton whistle.
I tried many things to find my whistle register but it was a little loud so I searched it up and apparently I was singing in super head voice. Do you have any tips to make the difference between them and how I could turn that into whistles?
How do you practice the muscles that tense in your throat for whistle tones without damaging? I can do it but struggle onve i get to higher notes where at first i can kind of do it but then it starts to hurt when i keeo trying to practice and cant hit it anymore
You make that look and sound so easy. I'm going to have to watch this a few time and practise over the next few days and see what develops. My new challenge. I'll get back to you with my findings :)
What does it mean if I can only hum in the whistle register? I can't make the air flow out though my mouth. Maybe it's just habituated since I'm constantly told to shut up with my absentminded singing. (vocal stimming)
That is because whistle notes aren’t connected to the voice. It is actually damaging to the cords to sing these notes, because they can only be produced through extreme tension in the throat. Only if you have a rare anatomy, can you sing these notes naturally. Those people who can, have the notes all the time and not just sometimes. I would quit while you’re ahead….
Hi Monet- This is the Mariah Whistle Tone, but it sounds different based on recording technology and microphone. Never forget that what you hear pop singers doing is EXTREMELY altered by technology.
:( I still can't seem to do it. When doing the creaky door exercise, does your voice just sort of snap into whistle from fry? I'm getting some new sensations from when I imagine pulling in, but it's a bit hard for me to rationalise the pulling-in feeling (but still exhaling). Do you feel like you are engaging any other muscles when your fry 'snaps' into whistle? My fry eventually stops and a focused stream of silent air comes out. I'm also thinking that I might have some neck tension. Also, how much air and how quickly are you pushing air out? Your whistles are so loud and rich! Thank you for making another whistle video :)
Hi Egg Noodles (love the name, by the way...), Yeah, so SOMETIMES the muscles responsible for the whistle voice need to be strengthened before sound will come out. When my fry snaps into whistle, I feel that the muscles in my larynx are pulling backwards (like reigns on a horse). There is VERY LITTLE airflow on the whistle, which made me second guess if I was inhaling/exhaling. Neck tension is real. I will address it in a future video. Thanks for the compliments... keep me posted on your progress!
@@VoiceWithJulia hi, just wanted to add, that it seems like the brain can image arytenoid activity which matches what you’re indicating with the hand movements for pulling back. I noticed this when I was practicing a higher belt, which as a former classical mezzo is not my normal, and I could mentally prep for a firmer closure in the rear. I also have freak whistle tones that are unconnected. Thanks for a great explainer video on something that has been a mystery - all delivered with lovely humanity and wonderful vocal demos! Happy to be a new subscriber.
I was watching this video, and I was very surprised. I never thought I had whistle register. But, are you talking about notes above D6? Where the only vowel you can sustain is "ee?" The highest note I have ever sung in front of an audience is E natural 6. Is every note up in coloratura territory necessarily whistle register? I just thought of it as head voice! Did I find it and not even know it?
Possibly! Whistle register is distinct outside of pitch level because of the function of the vocal cords. Therefore, whistle register coordinations can happen at lower pitches as well- it is not simply a matter of all notes above X are whistle register!
@@VoiceWithJulia Hmmm. I do have a bit of control on Eb6. If my tongue is relaxed, I can sustain an "ah" vowel. I wonder if that means it is still head voice... You know what I wish? I wish I had Ab6. The doll aria is such a fun piece of music, and some sopranos incorporate Ab6. I feel like I couldn't do the aria justice if F#6 is my highest note...
I'm a 17 y/o male with a range that spans G#2-F5 and have been trying to add notes to my lower and upper half, I've always theorized that my constant allergies have sort of messed with my tone and head voice/falsetto (idk if it works like that). Trying these techniques, I've been unable to produce any sound other than air. I've seen the creaky door/vocal fry technique, but am unable to flip into whistle. Any thoughts that could help me out?
Hi Sneezy, I have a couple thoughts, although I must make a disclaimer because I haven't heard your singing. I can only theorize in general what typical problems are in accessing the whistle register. First off, if you feel like you are "hitting a ceiling", it may be that the registration isn't flipping over because the preceding register (falsetto) isn't strong enough and/or free enough. (Don't confuse loud with free). If this is the case, it is important to work on cultivating the falsetto (up to your F5) and maintain an open throat. This will take consistent practice, and you may not see an increased range for a while. Another real possibility is that there is too much weight in the falsetto, and so the falsetto is actually reinforced head voice which will not transition to whistle easily. You can figure this out by recording yourself in what you think is "falsetto". Does it sound weaker? Does it sound more "female" in quality? Because you are so young, there is a lot of gray area, and some of this *could* be developmental. But again, I haven't heard you, so all of the above are just general theories. I do offer free 30 minute vocal consultations which you can schedule at www.voicewithjulia.com/bookings
Voice With Julia thanks so much! it does feel like im hitting a ceiling, so i will definitely work on my falsetto more, and make sure i'm not straining to produce loud notes. once again, thanks!
If you can't yet, try checking out my video on the head voice. You may need to gain more access to your lighter mechanism before attempting whistle register.
You have the same problem everyone has with these tutorials - there is absolutely nothing linking the technique with success. Could you explain WHAT you are doing when go from “creaking door” to an actual note? No one even attempts to explain… just do it and leave anyone who can’t intuitively get the physicality right trailing off…

I found my whistle note by talking squeaky I can speak my whistle register is that bad
Not at all. You SHOULD be able to speak in your whistle tone.
❤
why it breaks when I am singing high sound
the last group tune in your video
Maybe to much air or pressure
Feel like I'm going to pass out when I sing high voices...
Try lifting your tongue higher in the back..... the higher you go the higher the tongue lift in the back.
lexie
I'm a guy. I hit the seventh octive
