It's probably her most accessible project, but it still holds on to her signature quirks for that bit of oddity that makes long-time feel right at home with this new batch of tracks. We both gave it the same score.
I never heard of her before yesterday, and it's so interesting to hear so many people mention the accessibility of this record. As a newcomer to Twigs's music, I couldn't have come at a better time. And maybe I actually could not have come to appreciate it before now.

I actually really enjoyed this. It's a lot more easy-to-digest and "simple" compared to Twigs' past stuff, but it was a really fun listen and I'd come back to a lot of the tracks. Glad you liked it too!!

Yes. Loved this project. So happy you enjoyed it. It wasn’t as artistic as her last stuff, but she does this catchy sound literally so much justice. She still feels like she is in a lane of her own here.

Loved this album, FKA Twigs is a great artist, she hasnʼt missed once.

I wouldn't call it RnB, Twigs has said in the past that when she started releasing music people were really captivated by her sound, they hadn't heard music like that before and didn't feel like it fit any conventional genre, she was anonymous back then and didn't have her face attached to her music, but when photos of her were published people out of nowhere started calling her music RnB, and she was like, and I'm paraphrasing, "that's not what I'm going for, are you just saying this cause I'm black?"
I think Fantano called her "queen of alternative R&B" on an old video 🤣
god it's alternative rnb, all that shit you're talking about comes under that
not for nothing they started calling her rnb since rnb is defining mainly by vocals and twigs on her EP2 and LP1 was making pure rnb vocals despite unusual deconstructed electronic sonic landscapes. it's called alternative rnb. magdalene, however, has much less rnb influences.
I think the term "mixtape" gives artists more freedom to put like a 50 second song or spoken word or just random songs that maybe dont flow as coherent and there's no overall narrative for the whole project
This could go down as one of the best years in music, especially for pop music, between this mixtape and Dawn FM, we're looking at a potentially very exciting and sprawling year for albums. I can't wait!
And Death Grips might be coming back which is all that really needs to be said

So far it's been great, though I really hope Kendrick, Sampha and Ocean release this year. If not, I'm still great with A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown as there are so many artist who'll potentially drop this year.
This is definitely her most conventional and radio-friendly and club-friendly collection of songs, and I knew she was going in that direction before this came out. But I’m so glad she didn’t sacrifice her lush, layered and beautiful production present in her other two albums for the sake of making more pop-centric conventional music. The instrumentals on this album are immaculate

i think it's stupid and a testament to melonhead's poor takes the fact that he liked this mixtape more than her sophomore album (and magnum opus) MAGDALENE

It definitely does and says a lot more in terms of themes and experimentation, but it's also just a slog to get through. The middle five tracks (minus Mary Magdalene) are just so sub-par compared to the beginning and end, and it's just so bleak that it's overbearing. If it was musically more cohesive that would be fine. Caprisongs arguably aims lower but hits the target.

@@sayammontesreyes2393 Absolute nonsequitur point lol. I have no clue how to respond to that. The fact that half the tracks aren't particularly good and it's extremely depressing and musically slow doesn't have anything to do with it being a pop album.
Also it definitely is bleak, did we listen to the same album? We're talking about Magdalene by FKA twigs, right? The album about her very public breakup. I'm genuinely thinking you misread my comment and thought I was talking about Caprisongs (the album you said wasn't good but I was saying is). I wouldn't exactly call it a fun good-time album lol.
Also LP1 is better.
It’s a fresh sound for twigsy, she’s always had an electronic style but this feels like she was having fun; but kept it ambitious to a point where it can still be taken seriously.

I liked Careless a bit, I personally disliked oh my love, Papi Bones and which way more. Daniel Caesar was my fav part of that song as I didn't enjoy Twigs at all honestly.
MAGDALENE wasn’t just loved by fans, it was also loved by critics. Pretty much everyone besides you 🥴

Favorite album of the year so far. It’s been on repeat for me since it came out and I know I’ll be coming back to it for a long time. Oh My Love and Meta Angel are for sure highlights!

Oh my love and meta angel are my two favorites from the mixtape. Lightbeamers is a close third but when this album dropped oh my love was the ONLY song I listened to on repeat for maybe 3 days straight
I also really felt like she had sooo much fun writing and performing these songs!! and the colabs too
twigs forever evolving and giving and us fresh new sounds is the gift that keeps on giving. what a banger of a mixtape that just proves she could do any genre and make it her own.
such a fun mixtape where twigs experiments with different genres. i love that she’s finding herself and her passion for music again through the mixtape as well

The mixtape is risky and a little more mainstream but not generic, and very cohesive
to me its literally a 10, i cant quite explain how much i love this album, its flawless

Nah, Dawn FM is better as it has a better abundance of great songs than After Hours and Abel's best storyline yet.
There were 4-5 songs that gripped me right off the bat (honda, ride the dragon and papi bones being the greatest of those), and some that were more "growers," like which way, meta angel and oh my love- which is the mark of an album i'll probably continue to enjoy for a long time. Listening to this late at night while drawing is a lovely experience, it's such a fun mixtape. the only petty thing i outright dislike is that vocal bit at the beginning of meta angel- the "saggi moon.. pisci veen(..)" line is becoming like nails on a chalkboard to me already

god my heart kinda broke when you shat on "careless". It's my favourite and I really wanted to hear your thoughts on it, damn... I still think it's the best out of the album. The harmonies between twigs and daniel blend so so well and her vocals as "you can be careless" come off as so high it becomes almost like an etherial experience to me which is kind of what I expect when I listen to twigs so maybe that's why this is my fav

I just finished the album and I’m blown away had to come and hear your thoughts (glad to see the yellow flannel)
Compared to the other twigs albums this feels a lot more accessible and less weird. It reminds me of that one time David Lynch went out and made a more normal traditional movie because at that point in his career that was honestly the weirdest thing he could of done. I love this project it’s oozing with creativity and every track is like a different sub genre yet it still doesn’t feel disjointed to me. Been on repeat.

I only have one major gripe with this album.
I’m getting so tired of interludes and songs with interspersed recordings of people talking about random bullshit over the phone/zoom etc.
It’s been done so many times, especially in the Covid era. I understand the purpose, but it’s so overused and trite.
Can we talk about the fact that it's composed and produced by El Guincho, who has been on most of Rosalia's projects? That's why it's so fun and such an innovative mix of genres. Everything he does is just fresh!

Magdalene is one of my fave albums so I didn’t quite love caprisongs at first but it has grown on me! papi bones is such a banger, and the whole album is so fun it’s got me missing going out. it’s hard to compare the two albums and honestly best not to. Magdalene for the wintertime, caprisongs for shaking ass in the summertime

Personally I didn't enjoy this much as the middle of the album had so much Dancehall rehashes that I had a miserable first and second listen.
First 3 songs I will definitely listen to again, Lightbeamers and Closing song. The rest though I do not have any desire to listen to again.

I didn’t enjoy the project as first because I was really looking for that experimental-ness that FKA Twigs is known for, but after a few listens its got some awesome bangers and I really enjoy it now, although I do skip the interludes

I didn't expect a 80 tbh. This project may not be as ambitious as Magdalene or LP1 but it's a decent mixtape, it's fresh and fun. I really liked Honda, papi bones, minds of men and tears in the club.

This album was honestly pretty disappointing if you ask me. No where near Magdaeline. Just a more accessible sound, not at all interesting.
I find it amazing how she managed to bring her sound in such a fun and open direction without losing artistic edge and emotional potency.
It is true that it may not be as cohesive as some of her other work but to me, the chaotic nature of the project just adds to the overall impression that it is a living and breathing matter.
I feel like she's in a much better place and the music shows it. Best surprise of the year, so far!

I’m a little confused to how fantano has spoken about Pa Salieu. He says “FKA Twigs has great chemistry with THE feature” not naming him in this review. Nor has he shown interest in his acclaimed debut album. He seemingly like his music as he has celebrated some single features. You can’t review and showcase everything of course! I just find it surprising as Pa Salieu is such an innovative voice in UK hiphop right now

You said it best at the start. She has said in her detailings of this project here on TH-cam that she was allowing herself to be free and joyous as she usually can't brighten the sadness of her records. This renewed her interest in making music and pushed her to work with ppl as well as reflect through these inclusions of convos with her friends
CPRISONGS feels like Hard Candy after Confessions on a Dance Floor. M fans will understand.
