In 1979 , after getting married ,we moved in to what was known as the International district . There we met a wonderful old lady who was an Italian Jew whose family was take from Rome to a concentration camp . She no family to speak of . So , 1980 Rosh Hashanah , we adopted our first Jewish Grandma.
( My own Grandma 💞 passed away in the 70's) . This was the best Rosh Hashanah ever . It is a was so enriching for all of us. We had a new grandma and Sophie had a family that had been missing. She shared stories of pre war life and post war life for Jewish people . Grandma Sophie past away . She was never alone during any holidays . Being with her we received so much from her. Every year we find an elderly person that would be alone during the holidays to share them with.
I want to encourage others to do the same. They are who we are. They are heritage.

@@zimrah4837 Thank you. I am blessed by Hashem . Sometimes you start out thinking you're blessing someone else and find out you were the one being blessed . This was what happened to me.
Every time I hear the shofar, I'm reminded when G-d breathed life into Adam the sound of the shofar was heard . Every breath I take is the very breath Hashem has but into me. That I am to be His shofar , giving voice to His Glory . This is also my atonement; for the times I did not glorify Hashem with my voice and with my deeds,by commission or by omission. May I be more of an instrument in the hands of Hashem in this year
May we all be blessed in serving on Hashem in this New year.

Joseph, what a beautiful story - thank you so much for sharing it here and reminding all of us that we are supposed to be a blessing to each other and care for each other. You set out to be a blessing (and I'm sure you were!), but you also received the blessing of having Grandma Sophie in your life too. Beautiful story!

    Hello 🙏
My name is Paulina, I am a Christian and have recently felt that I should be applying myself in traditions such as this. More so the meaning of Rosh Hashanah is beautiful. We as Christiana believe Jesus died for our sins. . I hope to watch online and I too have some things I overlooked which is why I want to experience this traditions. Are there Christians you know that celebrate Rosh Hashanah and visit the temple during this time?
Thank you for sharing your video. I saw the previous one a few days ago and I'm sorry that this will be the second time you stay home. I pray that you and your family make the best and enjoy reflecting on God and those around you . ❤️🙏

Hi Paulina, I am a Christian learning about the festivals of the LORD... He instituted these rehearsal feasts for all His people to celebrate in faithful expectation of their prophetic fulfillments. I am glad to see like minded friends of God's people, such as you! 🙂. Happy Trumpets 🎺🎺!

Shana Tova! :) I have been watching your videos for a few months and have learned so much about Judaism from you! I started my process to convert to Judaism in December of 2019 and finally completed it last Thursday. I am soo happy that I am able to start the new year anew as a Jew and start my new spiritual journey!! :)

Thank you for this, I found this so helpful. Celebrating for the first time, my boyfriend is Jewish and because of Covid its just us. I think it would be so great and so popular if you could make a video for people like a crash course in customs, as you're so great at explaining everything

Your tablescapes are always so beautiful!!!
For this year, hopefully the last that I will celebrate alone in this new city, I will make a little garland and bake a honey cake and make some apple dishes. Then I will dress up nicely, sing a few favourites and then take some time to reflect and journal and find out what I want to do in this new year to grow as a person and make the world a better place as best I can.
It is kind of bittersweet because I just love Rosh Hashanah (like all festivals, I can not decide on a favourite, haha) but can not share this experience with a community (yet).
This new year for me comes with so many hopes and dreams and exciting things I have been waiting on for ages but with Corona, we were (and still are) also taught a harsh lesson. About life and what really matters, the importance of family, community, freedom. Never taking things for granted, no matter how mundane they may seem. Being able to step outside and breathe fresh air, a hug, playing music together... Yet we are still so blessed in every aspect of our lives and I hope to never forget the humility that the past year has taught me.

We like to decorate with poignants that we pick of our tree in our garden, it's one of the simbols of rosh Hashana too. Many families in our neighbourhood have a poignant tree as it is one of the fruit that our country is blessed with. We also make sure to take a picture by the tree and use that for our rosh Hashana cards. And as its such a fruitful tree we add the fruit with the card as a gift

Another reason for round challah is rosh hashanah is also the holiday where we "crown" Hashem as our king so the braided round challah represents a crown

Hello, for one, I LOVE your videos and your knowledge of all of this that you teach. I am not Jewish, I do have Jewish ancestors but never had the pleasure of knowing them as these were great great grandparents and so on. I am not a religious person, church literally scared me as a child, these were times I would go with friends and/or relatives, but my immediate family did not practice traditional religion. I do enjoy the traditions and hearing about the history of Judaism, and as I live in a small town, we don't have a Rabbi who is at the temple, Temple Beth El, on a regular basis, we do have a converted president but she doesn't put much effort into basic communication, NOT to seem rude haha. Not that I am trying to convert immediately or anything but at least practice, and practice correctly.
My questions would be, the ones I can think of at the moment, and I'm completely sure several more will come to me right after I click the "Comment" button. Why "2" candles? I know it's not normal to practice Jewish holidays alone, but my family would just think I'm going crazy lol so I will alone, for example, last night I lit the candles at sundown and tossed bread into a stream and thought about what I regretted from the previous year, and what I would like to improve for the new year, and the balance of the two, how they affect one another. I did buy bread from the local bakery today, would have homemade this but not quite the cook. Completely forgot to get honey and apples, although, I do have crackers and some homemade jam, but why the significance of apples and honey?
I apologize for rambling, and I would continue to do so because there is so much I would like to learn, and with this virus going around, our temple is currently closed, which is where I would have hoped to gain my knowledge, being able to talk with people in person and a real community type of thing is so much more than reading online and watching videos.
One reason I love your videos, like I said, you're a great teacher, AND you also have that ability to reflect your presence.
Anything you can make of this confusing inquiry would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You and Shanah Tovah!
    Jacob

Thank you for your message I’m glad you like my videos! The rabbis say we have two candles for a few different reasons but the one that resonates most with me is that it’s said on Shabbat we receive a second soul so the second candle reminds us of this.

I am not on other social media, except Twitter which I don't really use. So, I'll have to see things here on TH-cam. Glad you have a separate office/study space now. It is so good that we have Zoom on which to include those who would be left out of the observances due to being immuno-compromised or otherwise unable to join anyone in real physical presence. We learn through our senses and respond to our time and place through them, so it is meaningful for all of us to have visual representations of holidays or seasons, like the harvest, around us. I think it helps our mental, spiritual flow through the liturgical year to move with music and art and prayers and decorations and activities from one observance, season to another. It is nice to dress up a bit for a communal encounter with God, even though we do that in private off and on all day when we pray, etc., without wearing special clothes. Having grown up in an area with a lot of Quakers, who refer to their Sunday gatherings as meetings held at Quaker Meetinghouses, we call clothes worn for religious observance or into houses of worship "Sunday go to meetin' clothes." That is the colloquial expression that arose in this region of many Quakers plus Amish, Mennonites et al. I guess it's similar to kneeling or standing when one prays, though there is nothing wrong with sitting or even lying down when praying when not in a formal mode. Perhaps it is not unlike we would look at one another when speaking, but sometimes we may be doing dishes and on the phone with one another in a less formal communication. You are so right that it is more a season for spiritual inventory, discernment.

Hi Miriam another great video. I want you to know how your videos have impacted me. Because of you I have a deeper love and tender connection to Jewish people. Because of you I am Torah observant and learn from Rabbis on TH-cam. I bought a Star of David necklace but because I'm a Christian mine has a cross in it and I know that is a symbol of being messianic. Is it disrespectful to wear this if I'm not Jewish? I proudly support Jewish people and we are commanded to love one another. I wanted you to know this and to say thank you so much!

In our family we go Trick or Treating (although who knows what will happen with that this year!) and treat it as an American holiday like the 4th of July, I know it has pagan roots but that' pretty removed from what the reality of the holiday is today so it doesn't bother me.
