Chorus:
And he bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle Sam
And he only loved one woman
He was always proud of what he had
He said his greatest contribution
Is the ones you leave behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town Southern man

True words, brother. I am not even American (though I lived there for a few years) but I am Christian and I feel like I am a small town southern man. I am a man and from a small town though.

I’m a a 64 year old English man. This is the song I want played at my funeral. The sentiments in this song resonate with me. Thank you Alan Jackson.
This song was dedicated to my grandfather by the priest in their small southern town.. It was played at his funeral in front of 400 people. Family man, rancher, honorary director for Texas cattle raising association, county commissioner, county judge, man of the year in agriculture, POW korea, but most importantly, my grandfather. This song warms my heart and make me smile so big every time I hear it. Almost like it was written for him.
Very lovely of you, grandfather is forever grateful to you
My dad's story is the same too...I remember when he passed back in 2013 we would try n listen to this and we couldn't make it 30 seconds without crying and turning it off.... Now I'm 35 yrs old and married with 2 kids so I do my best to live by these same morals

I'm not a Southern Man. I'm not even an American. But I think you have no idea how many time I've watched this one. Seriously, what happened to this kind of country? This is the American Soul and one of the many reasons why I love the United States so much.

We lost our morality. Your post was quite heartwarming and thanks for taking the time to post that. Vive la France
Ill tell you exactly where it went: hard work, Christian virtue, and honor are not held as ideals for so many, so there goes the music that stood for it. Good news is that you can still find this type of music, you just have to dig in the woods a little to find the people who sing it. Proud to hear our music is appreciated in France! - A Southern Man
Know what, I can actually picture in my mind of France and people liking this music! God be with you all!

Just recently I've bought the rural property that I've always dreamed of. Everyday I thank Jesus Christ for the beautiful blessings in my life, especially for my amazing wife and daughter. 😊❤

This is my favorite Alan Jackson song. It's so reflective of how many of us grew up and where taught by our parents, grandparents and other family. To be hardworking, honest, humble, and love your family, love your wife or husband. To put yourself second behind them. Support our country, respect and help others. To put your faith in God.

I heard this for the first time today at a funeral . The words fit the deceased perfectly, and I hold them dearly in my heart. I’m from Pennsylvania, but I was raised in Florida. One of my best friends ever was blessed by small town Southern men: daddy, uncle, brother. My husband is a big city Southern man. A good man. There’s a difference. I’m jealous, but I’ve benefited from her wisdom framed by the small town Southern men in her life. Thank you for this song. It sure was fitting for Mr. Merrill Griffis, and it will make me smile everyday.

Now THIS.... this is what country is. Im 15, from Kentucky. Over the years ive seen a few things, unfortunatly- One of those things being ¨Country¨ transformed into something unspeekable. God Bless ya, wish me luck with the rest of my life.
Youre wise beyond your years young man, keep you head high and always have pride in where youre from, Cheers!
Just love all country music this was great.
Hold true to your values and thank God everyday for what you have. Liberalism and political correctness are not what this country was founded on. Hard work, self reliance, individual responsibility, family, and faith in God - these are the keys. Good luck to you young man!
From Ga here, Fuckin' Luke bryan has made country turn into Pop. All the dumbasses can't even see that it's just pop music. There's no story, it's all sex appeal. When I hear music, I want to feel the music and the story. It's all about the emotion that is instilled from a song. I'm not a big fan of country, but this is the real shit. A man telling a story and instilling emotion among his listeners.
SamhainBe 1vetboy Ya'll are so right. God bless.
I love songs because they let me visualize the people they're singing about. I've been listening to this song for so many years. It was sad at the end, though, when death came calling for the small-town southern man.

The American culture is so great. It's my life's dream to live in the US or even just to be there at least once in a lifetime and this song makes me feel nostalgic about one place I've never been to. Love it.
This song speaks to me of a man that loves God, loved one female, and raises his family until he died.

This song reminds me of my grandpa. He was a small town boy from Michigan. After he graduated high school, he married my grandma and had my dad, aunt, and uncle shortly after. They relocated to California for my grandpa’s work. Even though he’s been living in California after all these years, he’s still a midwest man at heart.
Yea but he is not southern, we are different in the south! It’s slow pace down here!!
This song is one of my favorites of some of the wonderful songs of Alan! Thank you Mr. Jackson. Yes Jesus will dance here again! Faith, Hope n Love!

I am a 60 years old woman from Poland.
I used to live in Texas for several years. At that time, I did not realise what treasure the country music was.
I love this song and the lyrics - Bowed his head to Jesus, stood by uncle Sam, only loved one woman - what beautiful values... I only wish uncle Sam and all the uncle Sams of other nations stood by the small town man not by the globalists, financiers and international corporations ... but this is another story.
Saludos desde Guatemala....
keep Poland Polish. its one of the last few European countries that are proud of its culture and people, which are White People. the USA was once a white country, now whites are a minority and ofc the country is now 2nd world soon to be 3rd world. the globalists what white people dead, dont let them kill your great culture. i wish to visit Poland one day, and i want it to still be Poland when i visit, not Pakistan or Libya... France, Germany, the UK have all fallen to globalists and have had their populations replaced by 3rd worlders. London literally looks like Pakistan these days.

First heard this song while airborne on a trip to Dubai in 2019. Couldn't just stop as it resonated with my reality. I appreciate my beloved dad and mum for their sacrifice and commitment to raising us their children. I pray for more long life fothem both. Of course, I listened to the song on my return journey to Nigeria 🇳🇬!
Thank you, Alan Jackson. You are easily my favourite...
So wonderful that you, as Nigerian, can hear the love in the voice of an American man for his father. Our cultures should not be far apart. Alan could not sleep after the attack on the World Trade Center. Pop music wanted him to change a lot of his song "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?" Make it more pop instead of country so that pop agencies could make more money off it. He didn't care about the money. He would not back down and he would not change the song. That is courage.
Played this at my grandfathers funeral in 2008, to this day it still brings tears to my face to listen to it..
Sorry for your grampa, but think he's in heaven now.
Country is my life ♥️❤🥰

Too bad he's Italian and doesn't understand the words, but the expressions and the images tell everything well. They talk about love and that of the 50s still with healthy behaviors and feelings. A whole life spent working to support his family, his children and in the certainty of faith. I can only say after reading the Italian translation that it's a wonderful song by Alan, sung in a sublime voice! Great music in the States! . Grande musica negli States!
This song and this music video represents the best that American conservatism can be.

Gray's diesel greatest singer
Pure country music. And a message.
European descendants that turned a land into a first world nation.
I grew up in a small town in Texas, did my time in the Marine Corps, lived out in CA in Orange County and ended up in Kentucky. Reclaimed my pride in who I am and where I come from after getting sucked into left wing politics as a young man. This is a great song and video showing the joy and love that’s worth fighting for ⚡️⚡️
Amen Brother. Never let the leftist lunatics shame you, your family, your heritage, your traditions. This is our home, our way of life, we're proud of it, and they can't have it.
Oddly enough my story is reverse of this. Born and raised 30 mins south of Orange County Moved to New Mexico to work in a salt mine at 25. Now in my 40s growing old with the most wonderful woman in Junction Texas . The vast contrast in not just politics but family values and faith is insane.
Thank you, Alan, for such a beautiful song . God 🙏 bless 🙏.
George Jones was so proud of Mr. Jackson. He felt he was carrying on the tradition. Quite an endorsement.
This man made my life better thru the crap I had to live and endure
Nice comment.
