X-ray versus MRI for bone injury

  • X-ray is inexpensive and has great bony detail to visualize displaced fractures. A bone bruise or nondisplaced fracture, however, can be easily missed on x-ray. MRI can be helpful for patients with a normal or equivocal x-ray and significant symptoms.

I fractured my cuboid 20 years ago. It was treated as a sprain, and the healed fracture was noted some years later on an X-ray. I have also sprained that ankle 10+ times. Two weeks ago I took a nasty fall and twisted the same foot (mid-foot, in the same spot). Everything about this reminds me of the cuboid fracture. There is moderate soft tissue damage as well, but severe, intense, immediate pain when the cuboid is palpated. I live in rural NM, and there are only x-rays here. I just got one. If the X-ray is negative, should I push for my doctor to refer me for an MRI or CT, which would require me to drive to a different part of the state? Or should I just suffer through it?

If that fracture is not displaced, how is it going to be treated? In a boot? I don't think that would need a surgery if it's not displaced.

Really wish you would include possible treatments in your videos

Exactly what I want to known. Thank you.
An excellent visual demonstration with clear explanation of the findings including when an MRI would be justified over an x-ray.

So many XRay doctors miss diagnose MRIs in the current years. WHY

Because MRIs are expensive. It all has to do with class and money, which is terrible and gross on my opinion. It means poorer people can't afford to be taken care of and richer people get all the health care they want. Sad day. 😢 but peoples are working on a solution. It's just taking a long time to find the right one.❤
