Hi, this is how you're supposed to use the kum automatic: you should go in the hole number 1 until it stop sharpening (hence the name automatic), then do the same in the hole number 2. It took longer than you were expecting because the pencil you pick had a different point length, so the process in the hole number 1 was to elongate instead of just sharpening.
The pronunciation is like in the song by the seekers "Kumbaya"

Well, I guess you just confirmed my opinion on sharpeners. lol I've been using T'Gaal and the KUM 4-in-1 for years and recently purchased the long point sharpener. I've definitely tried other sharpeners. I really want to like the hand cranked ones, but I always come back to these. Also, most of the ones that say they give you an adjustable point end up giving a shorter sharpen with a completely flat top... no point at all! I'm sure some people have a use for that, but it's certainly not what I'm looking for. I gave up the search and am just sticking with T'Gaal for a shorter point.

@KraftyKaitlyn - glad to help you confirm your decision! These are all STILL my go to sharpeners-only change is I’ve bought additional ones so I could have a 4-in-1 and Long Point sharpener in my travel art kit and not have to keep packing and unpacking them!😂

I have a xacto mighty mite. I'm 62 and my hands hurt when I manually sharpen them.
    I subbed.

You've got to use what works for you & your body! Achy hands make for less fun coloring art experiences for sure! My personal fave of the three I recommend is the 4-in-1 because it sharpens so well and is the perfect shape for my small hands:)

Thanks so much for sharing this important information! I’m wondering if the Kum 4 in 1 sharpener will sharpen my prismacolor pencils? I have arthritis so thanks for mentioning this while reviewing these products.

Hello, Susan:) Yes, the KUM 4 in 1 sharpens Prismacolor pencils beautifully! I have the full set of Prismacolors and have been using that sharpener with them on my current coloring project, and it does a lovely job! I do not have hand joint pain (elbow pain from hours and hours of drawing, but no hand pain from coloring, thankfully!), BUT I do have other hand issues that make grip difficult for me, and I find the 4 in 1 easy to hold and easy to sharpen with the right or left hand. It does not require the same amount of pinching as the other two sharpeners I review in this video, which my friends and family with arthritis report having trouble with. I hope these observations help you decide which pencil sharpener is best for you:) 💚 Michelle ps - sorry for the delayed response! TH-cam is awful with notification, so I am just now seeing your comment:(

This is great video with good information!! I always wondered which pencil sharpeners to buy. I still use an old eye liner pencil sharpener!!! I know! Not good. But it works ok for my cheap pencils!!! Haha!
    Thx for video.

You’re most welcome! And, if it’s working, no pencil sharpener is technically bad! The ones I deem not good are the ones that chew through pencils and cause breakage😖 I love these three-any one of them is a great purchase:)

Thanks for the tip! These three are still performing well, but when I need to replace one, I will check that site out!🤓

How difficult is it to change the blade on the T'gaal sharpener? It looks rather awkward from the video, hard to get a screw driver in there. I keep packs of B+D blades (I hope I'm remembering the name correctly) which seem to fit most hand sharpeners, will they fit this brand, too?

    • @HaveColorWillTravel

Gosh, I really don’t know! I have yet to need to replace a blade in any of my T’gaals (I have multiple stashed in convenient art-ing spots). The only sharpener I have that comes with blade replacements is the KUM long point (in this video), which I’m almost feeling needs replacing, but haven’t yet. I am not a heavy sharpener-I use a point in a pencil, rotating frequently, until I’m forced to stop working and sharpen-which is probably why I don’t have a good answer to your question.🙃 Looking at my T’Gaal though, it seems near impossible to change out the blade without damaging the sharpener as a whole😕

Thanks, I thought it looked like a difficult angle. I've ordered one anyway, I seem to be acquiring a large collection of sharpeners!

Honestly, I like having a variety of sharpeners, and I think it makes sense- -I have a variety of pencils, and each kind works best with a specific sharpener. As far as I’ve found, there isn’t one sharpener to rule them all.🤓

Is this only for colored pencils?

Not at all! All three perform well with graphite pencils as well. I especially love using the KUM Automatic Long Point sharpener for my drawing and writing pencils🤓
