Liquitex Basics Gloss Heavy Gel In Bookbinding: How To Turn Paper Into “Vinyl” Sketchbook Covers!
In this video I share with you and instruct my favorite art hack I stumbled upon this year: binding my handmade sketchbooks and making “vinyl” covers out of handmade paper with Liquitex Basics Gloss Heavy Gel! This hack was born out of necessity-I really wanted to learn how to make my own sketchbooks, but I did not have the proper adhesives! I hope you enjoy learning all about this ingenious (if I do say so myself) use of an acrylic medium and that it helps you feel empowered to try using your own art supplies in out-of-the-box ways! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions OR if you know of other surprising uses for gloss heavy gel and other acrylic mediums-it’s so exciting when our art supplies are “more than meets the eye!”
Thanks for watching, and have a creative and colorful day!🤓

During my recent portrait painting of my gorgeous tortie cat, Merry, I took a lot of photos, far more than I typically do while working. Why? Taking a photo every now and then throu...

Crayons and Petroleum Jelly: Blending Colors! (Part Two of Two)
A month since you posted....It's always fun to see what people's faves are. Erasers: My fave has got to be the Tombow Mono sanded eraser. The sanded part is very fine so it doesn't disturb the surface of sturdy paper too much. I'm not saying it's for everyone and I use it mostly for tiny smears of ink on cardstock when I'm making cards. Now I do mostly fine art..and it is still a great eraser, but I might be prefer to use a non-sanded and softer eraser. (I do mostly watercolor.) I have every one of the erasers you mentioned except the Brutfuner you mentioned as your new fave. My fave all-around brush is a cat's tongue and the one I fell in love with is the Silver Silk size 6 or 8? It's a synthetic, but like a dagger, it can do a very fine point or easily widen. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
@nancyloomis3046 thanks so much for watching and sharing your faves-I love talking art supplies! I know of the sanded eraser you mentioned, but I’ve not tried one. I can see how it would be useful with watercolor. When I need to get rid of a mishap with watercolor I pull out a Magic Eraser, the cleaning tool-works wonders! I also use Magic erasers to thoroughly clean palettes now and then. More often than not I have a very dirty palette-makes great colors! But occasionally I give myself a fresh start, and that cleaning tool helps me do the job:) I have a cat tongue brush as well and love it! Very versatile. Have a wonderful and creative rest of 2024!🥳
beautiful collection
@impish22 thanks-the art of others has definitely been a a joy to add to my studio practice!
What an informative video! I cannot wait to try out the heavy gel. 😊
@MelissaSkinner thanks for watching-I’m so glad you enjoyed it! The gloss heavy gel has been a game changer for me; I hope you find it useful too!🤓
How does the cover last over time with repeated use if the book for sketching? Has it changed at all or is it still like when you applied it? I guess I’m asking how it holds up over time.
@StevenVroomanPhD it has only been a month since I applied the gloss heavy gel to the covers of my sketchbook, but thus far it is holding up nicely! It has been over two month since applying it to my test paper strips and they too are standing strong, although they aren’t out and about getting used like my sketchbooks, so not sure it’s a good example. I’m happy with the results, though, and plan to apply the gloss heavy gel to further sketchbooks once I design their covers! Thanks for watching😍
What a great idea! Seeing that is from the Liquitex Basics line, it is probably at a lower price point from their professional line. I participated in that same Sketchbook Revival and my sketchbook was my most favorite sketchbook ever. I finished the entire sketchbook in a record time of 6 weeks!
@TracieWho you are correct! I love that Liquitex has the Basic line along side the Professional line and that they are both quality acrylic experiences! Makes trying things out much more affordable:) And yes-I felt the same about this sketchbook design! I am speeding through this first one as well and loved making five more in different sizes! I may never buy another mass produced sketchbook again! I love Sketchbook Revival and what Karen Abend puts together each year, don’t you?😍
that was reallly cool. A wonderful simple no nonsense video. Thank you. Its so refreshing no to have to listen to jarring music and some one taking 1000 words to say something that can be said in a handful. I'm going to play with my left over varnish too rather than waste it. thanks!
@jandrews7329 glad you enjoyed it! I was surprised by how much fun tinted varnish was to play with, and the sound of the brush on paper was part of that fun for me, so it made sense to include it in the video:) Thank you for those kind words!
I just checked, everyone. and it’s pretty easy to find clay festivals nearby wherever you are with a quick Google search!
@StevenVroomanPhD good to know!

@samjohnson-vrooman3098 happy to hear someone gets my nerdy references!🤓
I am really looking forward to the last test results! It sometimes feels like in Texas you can have windows or you can have art, not both!
@StevenVroomanPhD the struggle is definitely real, and it’s why testing lightfastness in MY climate is important to me before using an art supply in something out of my sketchbook🤓 Thanks for watching, and stay tuned!

@@KRCanetti glad you enjoyed it! I do have a thing for black ink, just didn’t realize it until folks started asking for my opinions on pens!😂 Thanks so much for watching!
@@KRCanetti out of curiosity, do you enjoy ink and drawing with it?
I learned today!
@ThepurrrBlog Awesome! Happy to hear it:) Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
@ThePurrrBlog You’re most welcome! Thanks for watching:)
If I wanted to do something mixing waterproof and non waterproof inks in a drawing that I do a wash on, what two pens would you suggest for that? Thanks!
@StevenVroomanPhD great question! The easiest to set up option would be to get a waterproof liner (ex. Micron Pigma liner) and the Pentel Stylo and have fun with the two ink option in your drawing. But, if you have more time, I would get two Sailor Fude de Mannen fountain pens (or any other-I just like the feel of these and their nibs), and fill one with waterproof ink and the other with water soluble ink (be sure to select FOR FOUNTAIN PEN USE when buying ink-other inks can ruin your pens!) and enjoy experimenting! With the second option, you could select ink of two different colors as well, say black and sepia or grey, and see what was possible!
Thanks for showcasing so thoroughly❤ Flying seems to be quite a worry with pens! Have you tried Looking for a pressure-proof container?
@jojojo8835 thanks for watching! And, that’s an interesting suggestion-I will look into it. The pens I travel with I actually use in flight (I’m not a fan of flying, so drawing is what I used to help me keep my claustrophobia under control), so wouldn’t help me out there, but I’ve often wanted to travel with a greater selection of supplies, and haven’t due to pressure issues, so if such a thing exists, that would be awesome!
Hi, can you tell me what kind of pouch you said you used for the car. Thanks
@rookablackbird sure! Here’s the link to the exact one I use: amzn.to/406bKXg I’ve had it for a little over a year now, and really love it! Not too big, not too small.
Awesome, thank you.
@rookablackbird my pleasure!🤓
very nice pens but god, they're fiddly; i got my first rotring back in the 70s when there just weren't that many alternatives; these days, when it comes to drawing, pen/ink technologies have moved on so much that for me, there are just so many great alternatives that the maintenance needed with rotring just isn't worth it just my $0.02
@samedavepollard you’re correct-there are a wide variety of drawing alternatives out there these days! And, I would agree that in comparison to many of those alternatives, Rotring are fiddly. That fiddly-ness is definitely not for everyone, as I mention in the video. For me, the payoff with Rotring is in the line-I love it and so I’m not bothered by the extra care they require. What pen do you find more to your liking these days?
@@HaveColorWillTravel i've had a lot of fun with the uni-ball vision elite (although i have to say one of the downsides of these alternatives to rotring is the crazy naming, and in particular the numbering, of these pens - the X501, the TechSpec991, the P5-G4 etc etc etc; can't help wondering if they spend more time naming these things than they do in designing them :-)
@@samdavepollard I’m familiar with those-they are indeed fun to draw and write with:) And, you’re spot on with the names, especially liner pens-I cannot keep them straight! At least they all look different, otherwise…😱
I find that Koh-i-Noor Ultradraw (black) ink works at least as well as the Rotring ink in my Isographs, and it is more readily available. Blick carries it, for example.
@KirthGersen-qz9ij that’s great to know! Thank you for adding it to the conversation:) I’ve managed to find a supply of Rotring ink, but you’re correct-it is difficult to acquire! Glad to now have a backup plan!
totally new to acrylics, this video has been extremely helpful in clarifying and de-mystifying all those numbers. Thank you so much.
@LapisLizard thanks for watching, and I’m so glad you found my deep dive into paint labels helpful! Be sure to check out my other videos on acrylic-folks just starting out have told me they’ve really gotten a lot out of them:)
Ooh, thanks that’s amazing colour work. Where am I going to keep all those pens😂Hey I love your portrait, thanks for sharing 🤗 I’m trying to practice drawing things I find difficult myself so can relate, but it’s so satisfying when the hard work pays off
@jojojo8835 thank you for the kind words and for watching! And yeah, almost a year later from filming this, and that chunky caddy is still how I’m storing this awesome markers🙃 It’s definitely not a great solution, but it works well enough😂
How do you make it look like that?
@delphinechikah Because varnish is transparent and I’m only using a few drops of acrylic ink (and so keeping the mixture transparent but now colored), every layer I paint (and I painted quite a few) shows through. Plus varnish dries quickly, so every time I touch it, it leaves an interesting mark. Super fun!
Thanks for nice delivery. I am a regular user of Isographic Rotring pens and surprisingly, not making drawings but using as a writing tool. Your presentation is also very impressive.
@siddiquiva7911 you’re so welcome:) Thank you for watching! And I agree-Rotring are wonderful pens for writing as well!
oh I love this today I learned how to do this... The video that keeps on giving
@SlappingPaintinPaper thanks so much for watching! Glad you found something new and interesting in it-always my goal with my videos🤓
You are very good at the terra cotta pots! I don't know how you withstand the South Tx weather in the summer. Kudos for persevering, and I hope that all goes well with your son.
@CastleMC - thank you so much! There’s just something about pots that intrigues me right now, so I’m just gonna go with it! And, my secret to surviving painting in the south Texas summer-body ice (aka the smallest blue ice for lunch boxes I can find) and a usb fan! Gives me about an hour and a half IF I start early enough in the morning. Worth it, I think-painting en plein aire is just so…rewarding:)
I am ready for a series of just pots with stems that disappear out the top of the page. Flowers are the occasional guests in a flowerpot series! Who’s with me?!?!!!!
@@StevenVroomanPhD I do have a new sketchbook waiting to be unwrapped….Perhaps it will be my Pots Only sketchbooks….🤔🪴
Thank you for sharing! I love seeing all the different things and ways you painted. I do not blame you in the least for not going outside. My favorite is I think what you called fence flowers? The one you did with the dagger brush. It's bold in a way some others were. I also loved your little people. Ooh, I'm with Steve, I also really like the front yard one. I hope Sam's recovery and Steve's work transition are going well, and you're working on something you're enjoying. I'd be down for a future challenge, but Caity has stolen anything I had resembling art supplies. I have brush markers remaining and that's about it. lol (Arwen)
@abczoomom I’m so glad you enjoyed the video-thank you for watching!😍 And, a 30x30 direct brush marker challenge sound fun, honestly! Alcohol or water soluble brush pens?? I’m all about exploring this challenge concept with different media right now😂
@@HaveColorWillTravel I have the Ohuhu Maui water based and at least my fair share of Archer & Olive Calliographs, also water. I think I thought they would be easier somehow? I let Caity take all my Acrylographs this time, because as much as I like the idea of paint pens that can write on dark paper it feels far too permanent to actually *do* that. I know, fears, I’m working on ‘em. 😁
@@abczoomom I hear that:) Loads of folks love Posca pens, and I have a fair amount, but…I’d rather use a brush to put acrylic down-something about a fuzzy nib feels too clumsy in my hands🙃
Hello, thank you so much for this video! Today when visiting a art supplies store l have noticed that titanium white is only opaque (just black square) is there a transparent version of it?
Hi, and thanks so much for watching:) To answer your question, yes, there is a transparent white, and I talk all about the differences between titanium white and mixing white (the transparent white, also sometimes labeled Chinese white) in this video: th-cam.com/video/N_VqpVjGO2U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=e8Q0wqXMvSNtC7qm. Hope you find it helpful!🤓
I think it's called water (If you are doing watercolor) Their are a few Whites in watercolor.
@@meadowmorph3291 reserving the white of the paper is a good strategy for creating a white color in one’s painting in watercolor (I believe that’s what you were referring to by saying water). For tinting an existing color that’s transparent and trying to maintain most of its transparency, Mixing white or Chinese white or Zinc white (PW4, but called different names depending on brands) is the best option. You can also find this type of white in acrylic and oil. I like having a variety of whites in my studio so I have all the color options when mixing:)
Thank you for this video. I bought a set of Rotring Isograph pens last week and I'm about to use them for the first time today ... well, I have used one once before, it was back in the 80s and I somehow managed to prick my thumb with it and I still have the world's tiniest tattoo to this very day 😄 It is a little daunting though, as I'm used to using felt tips, and especially when I'm using them to outline some colour work on paintings I've spent weeks on! So watching your video was reassuring as you have covered so many thing I wasn't sure on such as technique, filling, care, etc. So I'm feeling much more confident now, but I'll do some practice before I commit ink to my precious painting! Thank you so much, and happy arting! 😁🧡
I’m so glad you enjoyed my art nerd deep dive into Rotrings!😍 These are by far my fave pens for inking with watercolor, but you’re right to give them a little practice time first if you’ve been creating with fiber tips or felt tips for a while-the ink flow is so different! I find my hand angle needs to be adjusted between needle tips and fiber tips and there’s definitely a need for different hand pressure adjustments. I hope you have fun re-discovering these pens!!
They are great technical pens for certain 😊. I bought a set back in the *cough 80’s for a drafting course. They were also used to print industrial CAD/CAM drawings. You put your pen in the mechanical “arm” compass slot and it drew the object on special paper. This is why it’s almost a 90 writer. (Back in the 5 1/4 floppy disk 💾 & C-Prompt days when I was using them, mind you. ) They are made for industrial precision (& use with machines) very precise …. But they are absolutely fun to draw / doodle with too. Thanks for the info.👍
You’re most welcome! And thanks for sharing your pen history-love hearing it!🤓
Well, I guess you just confirmed my opinion on sharpeners. lol I've been using T'Gaal and the KUM 4-in-1 for years and recently purchased the long point sharpener. I've definitely tried other sharpeners. I really want to like the hand cranked ones, but I always come back to these. Also, most of the ones that say they give you an adjustable point end up giving a shorter sharpen with a completely flat top... no point at all! I'm sure some people have a use for that, but it's certainly not what I'm looking for. I gave up the search and am just sticking with T'Gaal for a shorter point.
@KraftyKaitlyn - glad to help you confirm your decision! These are all STILL my go to sharpeners-only change is I’ve bought additional ones so I could have a 4-in-1 and Long Point sharpener in my travel art kit and not have to keep packing and unpacking them!😂
JetPens carries the T'Gaal sharpeners and some KUM sharpeners. They focus more on stationary as a whole instead of art supplies, but there are a fair amount of art supplies to be found on their site too (open-stock pencils, watercolors, etc.).
Back in 1971 I bought my first Rotring pen. It was revelation. Thanks for this video. I too have many pens and get confused with which ones are old and running out of ink, My Rotring pens have come back into my life.
You’re most welcome @amandasutton1839 ! To my eye, no line is quite as satisfying to look at as my Rotring lines, though I recently bought a Sailor Fude Tip fountain pen, and I’m really loving it too, but for sketching on the go, something my Rotrings aren’t practical for.
Thanks very much for this great video😊🌻. I've been reading the comments and I just have one question- how do you set the color? For example, say I wanted to use this method to make bookmarks, how would I keep the color and the petrolium jelly from bleeding out onto the pages of the book when it's closed? Thanks.
Hi, and you’re so welcome! Thanks for watching:) And to answer your question: There’s no permanent way that I’ve found to set wax-based art materials in a way that if they make contact with a receptive surface (like a crayon colored bookmark touching a paper book) some color might not transfer. BUT, placing a bookmark you’ve created in a glassine envelope (I use acid free, lignin free fold over clear bookmarked-sized envelopes) solves this problem perfectly! I include such envelopes in all of the colorable bookmarks I sell on my website. You can see them here to get the idea: www.havecolorwilltravel.com/p/xproductbrowsercategoriesperrow3viewsgr.html?m=1#!/Colorable-Hug-A-Mini-Creative-Care-Package-a-4-pack-of-colorable-bookmarks/p/112253442/category=30315225 Hope this helps with your project!🤓
You're very welcome. I thought the answer might be something like that, only I didn't know there were actually envelopes. What a great idea. Thank you. Also I have bookmarked your website😉.
Awesome:) And I’m glad you find the content there of value! I plan to be adding more in the coming months-I’ve been exploring a lot of exciting avenues of inquiry lately:)
Love these pens! I have the college set, 0.25, 0.35, and 0.5. I've had to clean them only once in a few years (my fault for not using them frequently) and I plan to get a 0.3 and 0.4 to fill in the gaps! Using them on vellum paper is an absolute dream.
I have sizes .2 through .6 and absolutely love them! I’ve not tried them on vellum-I tend to use them on watercolor paper & then paint my illustration-but I will have to give that a try! Thanks for watching:)
But why would people use the transparent white? It’s too translucent
@Wowwwzaaa for the very reason I speak to and demo in this video-to avoid creating opacity in a color you are wishing to tint. Titanium white (PW6) is the most opaque of all paints, so mixing it with any color immediately creates a pastel-like version of the original color. Sometimes that’s what you-covering power and the softness of pastels-but sometimes not, especially when working with transparent colors! It’s likely why it’s call “Mixing White” in some acrylic paint brands, to help folks understand its purpose. For watercolor, mixing white (a less opaque white) is typically called Chinese White. In both cases, the pigment code you want to look for a mixing white is PW4. Hope the difference & purpose is clearer for you-mixing white, unlike titanium, is rarely used on its own:)
Glad to see another rapidograph/isograph enthusiast! Koh-i-noor (apparently they bought Rotring) is another solid choice for a technical pen set. I buy used sets to try and repair them on my free time.
@aquanox4438 Really? I hadn’t heard that about Koh-i-noor acquiring Rotring! Hopefully that will help with availability? Rotring are so hard to find for most folks, me included! I take very good care of mine as i love them SO much-their lines are so satisfying! My Rotring, my Pentel Bush pen, and my Sailor Fude nib fountain pen make up my go to family of drawing tools:)
It would have been nice if you showed the water resistant part by using water.
Thanks for the suggestion! I will keep that in mind for a future video:)
appreciated this info thankyou ,may i suggest the music in the back ground i found somewhat off putting ,just me i suppose but it was difficult to concentrate ..
I will keep that in mind for future videos! Some folks love background music, some need silence. Can’t please everyone with every video, so I try to offer a little of each type! Thank you for watching and for the suggestion:)
Thank you so much! I learned so many new valuable things!!!
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching!🌟
It's usually not recommended to use these on textured paper. Have they been clogged or damaged by using it on paper that has 'tooth'?
@gunsmokeandghouls , I have had no trouble using Rotrings on watercolor paper (haven’t felt the need to use them on really loose fibrous paper like construction paper). But, I am very attentive to my nibs-cleaning them periodically as I work if I see any fiber collecting on the nibs. I love the line they create on the paper I love, so it is worth the effort for me. I also have a “light touch” according to those who’ve watch me draw, so perhaps with a heavier hand there’d be a bit of a problem there. And I mention those things in this video-with care and attention, these pens are awesome on watercolor paper.
Thanks for this comparison. About what to do with leftover paint on your palette and toning down your colors: At the end of your painting session transfer all the leftover paint to a lidded jar and mix them up. Keep adding to this jar, day after day. This becomes a "mother color". When you want less garish colors than what comes out of the tube add just a tiny touch of Mother to each of the color piles that you will be working with. This tones down to colors slightly and makes them harmonize with each other because they now have a bit of every color. BTW, it looks like you have mold growing in your stay wet palette. Try putting a couple of Lysol Wipes under the clean sponge to prevent mold from developing.
Making a “parent color” (that’s the term I gave to this practice) is something I love to do when working on a painting! Thanks for bringing up that option:) And, I know all about mold growth in moist palettes (learned that one the hard way😝), but that coloration in this video is residual staining from previous painting sessions-I use sta-wet palette paper for as long as possible before letting it dry out and then using it for collage fodder or to cover a handmade sketchbook. Maximizing my materials is a big focus for me-art supplies are so expensive!🤑
Thanks for sharing this comment and comparison the isographic pens. Kind regards, Geertjan
Absolutely:)
Thanks for validating the little blob at the end of my lines when I use a micron 😂
Ha! You’re most welcome😄
I'm so jealous I love the creamy crayons
They really are such fun to create with! I love having all the colors🤓
Thank you for a very informative video. If I can make a tiny little feedback… I am sound sensitive, and every time you drummed repeatedly on the tin boxes with your fingertips, I almost clicked off your video, because it became hard for me to listen to. I made it to the end, though 😊 Take care ❤
Thank you for watching despite my nervous gestures-I appreciate it! And thank you for sharing your experience-I will keep that in mind as I prep myself to film new work:)
@@HaveColorWillTravel I totally understand that nervous gesture 🤗 I think you did great. I did not pick up any nervousness at all, and I enjoyed your video. I dabble a bit it colored pencils, and a bit in watercolor, so this video intrigued me 😊 I have subscribed because you said that you have many art supplies, so I imagine you have many fun things in store here on your channel ❤️ Greetings from Norway
Thanks for subscribing, and yes, all kinds art & the supplies to make all kinds of art are my passion, so when I have time, I love sharing about what I’ve learned or am learning!🤓
Good afternoon! Could you please tell me if the caps of isographs of different nib sizes are identical inside? Can you use the cap from a 0.2 isograph with a 0.5 isograph? Thank you!
Good morning:) On the Rotring I have (sizes .2 to .6), each cap is labeled at the top with its size identifier, which suggests that they are not interchangeable. But I looked carefully at a .3 and .5, and to my eye the inside is the same rubberized inner barrier on each, so my best guess that with sizes that are relatively close to each other, the caps might be interchangeable. BUT that is just a guess, so keep that in mind! Thanks for the interesting question-I’d never examine their caps closely before!🤓
Thank you!
No more produced !!! I love broad tip also 1.4 mm
Really? Are you outside of the U.S.? Here in the states, our major art retailers still sell them, though 1.4 I’ve never seen-that sounds like amazing size to work with!!
the isograph 0.35 is my all time favourite drawing pen, i adore the fine lines i can get with it. My biggest issue with these pens is that the barrel always eventually cracks, sometimes to the point where some of the threads actually crack off and the barrel wont stay on the pen at all. It's exceedingly frustrating.
They do make may favorite lines also! But I agree-their design is fragile. I opt to use my Rotrings exclusively in my studio space-they don’t travel with me or get put in anything but the case they came in because I just don’t trust the design to hold up to the rough and tumble-ness of life. I’m even super gentle when twisting their caps off and on for the exact reason you mentioned-the threads don’t seemed designed for anything but the lightest touch. Frustrating, yes, but still LOVE the lines I can get, so they are still my faves!
Your voice is so soothing!
How kind of you to say-thank you!
great tip!
Thanks-glad you found it helpful:)
Do watercolor crayons leave a residue if you use them this way? Or do they wash away like the pencils?
Watercolor crayons are a bit tricky, and my suspicion is that it is due to their waxy nature. If you were sketching with a super light touch AND coming back to these lines fairly quickly with your paint or water, it *might* not give you any trouble. But in my experience, even having to set aside a piece of work for a day (which, let’s be real, often has to happen), the crayon lines set into the paper or canvas in what I find to be an unhelpful way. Watercolor pencils (at least the ones I use in this video) don’t have that issue. Long answer to say be careful with watercolor crayons when it comes to creating under drawings🙃
