literally thought i was having a stroke when I started this video. can't believe we got them both on at the same time with their busy schedules, selling crows, hanging out with dan marino, and going to pulled pork park and all that.
also im gonna yap for a second here because this is one of my favorite movies of all time and I love the book as well. I will say even if you're not a reader like that, if you enjoy this movie, you will like the book. It is very short and reads super fast because the writing is very witty and straight forward like a lot of the iconic lines you talked about from the movie. I promise it takes a matter of days to get through and it is a very similar experience to watching the movie because fincher captured the grimey dirtbag vibes so well, but its also entertaining to compare them, and will give you another level of appreciation for the movie. You were right about the book and movie being extremely similar. I think literally everything the narrator (I call him jack. I am jacks distaste for having to say "the narrator" every time I refer to him ;) ) says is taken verbatim from the book. It is quite literally the closest adaptation from book to movie that I have ever seen, despite the alternate endings and other small plot differences. And I'm telling you it's because fincher knew the vibes dude. He replicated them so well. I will say, on the topic of homosexual undertones, I personally believe that jack does have a sort of attraction to tyler, and/or jared leto's blonde ass character. And that's why he beats up Leto like he does. In the previous scene, tyler shows praise to leto and you can visibly see jack become upset and most likely jealous. And after jack beats the shit outta him he says to tyler that he just felt like destroying something beautiful. One of my favorite things about the book and movie are that they're up for personal interpretation, but yeah, there are definitely people that would argue that the whole story is an allegory for being queer and in the closet. Which definitely plays into this sort of internal battle and his incessant toxic masulinity and "dirtbag philosophy" you guys were talking about. Because toxic masculinity and violence is very often a result of men being closeted and in denial. I'd like to mention as well that it's very often a result of intense emotional and/or physical isolation. We know jack in the beginning is a very isolated person. Even when he links up with tyler and they form project mayhem, (on paper st., an extremely isolated location) there's lots of radical, almost cultish things about project mayhem. And what has been proven, is that for someone to be persuaded to partake in something like project mayhem, they'd have to have an incredibly deep feeling of isolation. We see it today with crazy people that spend too much time online and fall down a rabbithole and succumb to being radicalized too far on either end of the political spectrum. I mean shit we see it with literal cults. What is factual is that Palahniuk intended for this to be a satirical take on hypermasculinity and the damage it does. Despite what some bros out there might think, you're not supposed to look up to tyler durden, you're supposed to scoff at him or feel bad or horrified by how misguided his mentality is. Sure he has charisma and a way of talking that makes you believe him no matter how deluded it is. But he's not the hero in this story, if there is one at all. Anyone who doesn't understand that, and takes what he says at face value, is essentially not in on the joke, because they're probably the kind of person this movie is satirizing. He wrote the book as kind of a 'fuck you' to publishers because no one seemed to care about his other work. It was supposed to be bizarre and violently unhinged for this reason. But. Palahniuk himself is gay. So, like I said, there are people who will take the queer undertones of the story, the fact that it is dunking on hypermasculinity, and Palahniuk's sexual orientation, and they will argue the whole thing is about being closeted. Personally, I think that's a bit of a flat take and it ignores all the other levels of the story. I think its definitely a little gay but that's not the whole of the narrative and its purpose. I think queerness is 100% a part of the conversation, there's just so much more to unpack that is interlinked with the internal struggle of hypermasculinity and identity and how that affects one's existence in the modern world. Thats also why I don't love the 'Marla's not real' or 'maybe no one is real' theories either, because I think they flatten the story in the same way. It just feels like a cop out theory because yeah, I guess technically if tyler was imaginary then how do we know anyone exists?? I mean, sure but that's almost no fun. Almost too open ended, and makes the story less meaningful because its just about a man with a grand delusion talking to himself all day long. Idk I see why people are interested in it but I personally think its much more interesting to disregard that, especially since the evidence points to tyler being the only "alter". Idk I think the story has more impact and heart when you interpret that, other than tyler, these are all real people being affected. Also, where Tyler serves a purpose almost for jack, filling this hole in his life, being all the things he wished he was, I personally can't see how marla as a character serves a similar purpose for him (enough to constitute her being an alter). It feels very apparent that she exists in the external world because she actively causes him distress within the external world, without giving him any internal validation the same way Tyler does. (and I know there's a valid argument against this. this is just how I feel okay lol) That being said, I still understand why its a popular conversation and that's part of the beauty of the story being up to interpretation. Marla does have some of her mothers fat. It is bizarre for sure and off the top of my head I don't remember exactly why. But I believe she asks jack to store it for her in the fridge at paper st. and then tyler makes it into soap and its kind of a big point of contention between jack and marla. What I do remember is being taken off guard by that whole plotline on the first read lol. Wasn't expecting it because who in the ever loving fuck just has the fat of their loved one. like,,,,,,christ on a bike. As far as the ending is concerned, I do enjoy the book ending as well. From my memory, none of the bombs worked because he used paraffin in the bombs and "paraffin never works". which is one of those almost inside jokes that is established between jack and the reader almost immediately in the beginning of the book. (And we could dive into how this could've been a form of unconscious sabotage because if he was so very aware he could never get the paraffin bombs to work, why did he use them? But that's a whole other train of thought). Anyways, jack is on the roof of one of the buildings about to kill himself to kill tyler, while there's police helicopters flying above him, like in the book they were on to him at this point. And suddenly marla and all the support group people come out onto the roof and marla is pleading with him to stop. And he shoots himself and the chapter ends. The next and final chapter is, like you mentioned, kind of like he's in heaven/a mental hospital. Except I don't think it's a posthumous delusion at all. I think he's very much alive and well and so are the project mayhem "space monkeys" and that's what makes the original ending so chilling. See this is what I mean when I say you take all the fun out when you argue its all fake, you know? In the beginning of the last chapter, jack says, " When I pulled the trigger I died. Liar. And Tyler died." And he goes on to talk about how he talks to "god". Except god has degrees on his wall. And god talks and asks questions like a therapist or psychiatrist would. And it seems during their conversations that jack hasn't let go of these nihilistic sentiments he harbored because of Tyler, contrary to what one might think since he shot himself so tyler should supposedly be dead along with this mindset..... Jack talks about how how everything is white on white in heaven, everything is quiet, rubber soled shoes. He gets letters from fans in heaven. He says there are "angels" that work in shifts and bring him meals and meds. And the last line of the book is something along the lines of how sometimes these angels will whisper to him, "Everything is going according to plan. We look forward to getting you back." goosebumps bro. Its a vastly different ending as far as vibes go but Palahniuk has fully endorsed it and thought it was a good creative choice to make with the movie. So yeah dude its at least worth reading the last chapter of the book online or something if you're not down to read the whole book. It's honestly impressive how entertaining and expressive his writing is because its also incredibly blunt and minimalistic at the same time. Worth checking out for sure if you are into this film. ok this is the end of my disertation because if I don't stop now I never will. thank you for discussing one of my favorite movies okay goodbye
paused the vid RIGHT BEFORE graydon said that tyler wasn’t real to go watch fight club for the first time. i’m shocked. and also the intro makes so much more sense
Dj grant died of cholera in 1912. We hear guys voice but his ghost is rarely visible and doesn’t show up on camera so it would be an awkward edit. That’s why it’s totally chill that he’s not paid. He doesn’t eat and can sleep anywhere rent free. Total waste of his abilities imo, but I can’t fault an immortal being for lacking motivation. It would be hard to care about anything when you are condemned to eternal life. No end. No rest. No purpose. He’s pretty good at making little tier lists though.
Guys DO NOT join Riley and Graydons fight club. I went to the first meeting and they charged me $20 at the door and it was only the 2 of them and me taking turns punching each other. 1/10 don’t recommend. Was cool to see Dignans cage though. (The ones he keeps people in)
I think Zodiac is Fincher's best. An obsessive making a movie about obsession. But it's been years since i watched Fight Club. this makes me want to rewatch for sure
I'm glad that Diggy and Graydon finally got over their generational beef spanning the entirety of human civilization, I mean it's not fair that Diggy's ancestor twerked on Graydon's ancestor's grave but it was very much in the past and I'm glad that they're able to get along now.
The first time I ever saw Fight Club it was on TV, maybe G4 or something, and I turned the channel DURING the scene where it’s revealed that Tyler isn’t real. probably a reference to the film, how tyler splices single frames of p0rn into film reels so they flash for a split second. that’s my guess. (i commented this already but i think youtube took it down cause i didn’t censor it)
I've seen this movie so many times that just the mention of it gets the DVD menu screen music stuck in my head. You gotta read the book. It's just as good, and fleshes it out a little more.
Mustn’t forget that scene in the airport in the beginning where Tyler Durden just straight up steals some dude’s car in the background. It’s like the one scene where another character acknowledges his existence 😭
I think you guys should do one of these with film Cooper, apart that from the fact that he's really funny imo, he studied film and has made a couple projects, so I think it would be great :)
