- How a Former Convict Taught me to Mine Gold Simply! | Learn to Prospect
Old Time miners will tell you that the best place to look and find gold is on the bedrock. However, that is not always the case. In this video I show you exactly where to find easy gold that most prospectors overlook. All while processing the gravels through my home made rocker box.

3:56 How does it happen? You're shaking a pan, or scanning the land. Or shovelling til you thought you would burst. You've sure got a thirst. A hard earned thirst needs a big cold Dare, and the best cold Dare is, uh Dare. You know how it happens... you're down on the creek, shovel doggers having a peek, or getting skunked til you thought you were cursed. You've sure got a thirst. A hard earned thirst needs a big cold Dare, and the best cold Dare is, uh Dare, a long cold Dare. It can come in a mine, you need some gold now or Fern will bow-wow. Matter of fact, I've got it now... Cheers for the vid Chris :)
Now that's some quality poetry
Having watched all your videos for years , I think the biggest upgrade you’ve made was sitting on a bucket and sitting in the shade.
Man! You mean I could have been sitting on a bucket all this time?
I think a neat project would be , mixing a rocker box rigged up to a foot powered water pump..so rocking and pumping water are one movement.
That does sound efficient
Great idea
Short google search and there are 50W solar panel+pump setups that can pump up to 800l an hour for 50 bucks.
Good idea … but., everything he has to carry out there with him. Normally in a backpack. When it comes to prospecting., it’s less is more. Once he finds the gold then you can bring more.
It would work great attached to an old school bellows with a pivot on one side. Rocks back and forth while pumping water to the top
So when Men At Work sang Down Under, the part with the guy smiling and handing a vegemite sandwhich. The guy was smiling because he handed someone a jank sandwich and was about to laugh at the unfortunate soul for eating it. Its all so clear now!
Yep
Nah - the guy he was giving to was an Aussie and knows his vegemite!
The true meaning is a bit deeper - a humours description of the Australian government entering into trade with the EU.
Me, from the US, thought he said a vegematic sandwich. Me thinking a vegematic is a chopping device similar to a meat grinder or salad shooter. BTW, what exactly is vegemite? Is it peanut butter? Nutella? Something worse?
In most countries, they feed the crud from the bottom of beer vats to cattle. Here, folks enjoy it on toast :)
Just a heads up, the Xp classifier fits straight on top of the bunnings bucket perfectly. Just fill the bucket with water and go hell for leather.
You blokes are quite MAD.....and I love it!!!
Bravo gents!!!
There's madness in the geniuses
Ive infected the comments too ya cant get rid of me mohahahaha
😅😅😅
Glad to hear you will be selling some type of rocker box inspired by this prototype! Looks like it's working really well for classified material.
You should build yourself a rotating compost sifter for the classification portion. Bucket with holes in it that spins. Have it on a 25 degree angle, feed into the top, rocks come out the bottom and dirt sieves through the bottom side. Can power it with a dewalt drill
That's actually a great idea
Good thinking about finishing deposits before uploading, so as to not allow the thieves to poach. We all know who i'm talking about haha 👌👍
Excellent presentation and a great day on the creek.
I love the way you think outside the box for different projects
When you pulled out that sandwich I know it was a Vegemite Sandwich been there done that from someone from the US of a Vegemite taste really different but it really looks like peanut butter that we have here in the states enjoy
You have black peanut butter ? Our peanut butter looks like your peanut butter, Our Vegemite looks like your used axle grease....!!!!
@@MickH60Mmmmm, used axle grease! Yummy!😅
That was a very satisfying episode. Can’t wait to see the upcoming episodes. It sounded like speed racer drive by a couple times too. Or a really big fly.
🤣 you brought your “meat scoops” love your sense of humor! Like always awesome job explaining the process and the reasons behind all of it. Brilliant. Another great video Chris, thank you for continuing to produce such great videos! 😉👊✌️
The meat scoops are attached so I rarely lose the.
I like the format of this video. Nice work!
I'm so happy for you, Chris. The gold you found had more larger pieces than most of the time. It was about time that you got to stroll into the middle to garner some good gold! Thank you for sharing your adventures! Blessings from Alabama ❤️
Way to go Chris.... everyone's leaving starts somewhere
Thank you I enjoyed that. Love the rocker box
Thank Chris! Cheers 🍻
Good video, Chris.
Congratulations bro, good job 👏
Excellent video, Chris. Loved seeing the rocker box in action. Managed to get a Jarvie riffle from Paul Jarvis here in Edmonton last summer for my 3d printed mini highbanker that my son made for me. Like you, I am a firm believer in classifying the dug material in buckets. Everyone to their own I guess, as a lot of folks think classifying is a complete waste of time. Best wishes to you and yours.
Hi guys thanks for the adventure. It's was awesome
Loving the rocker box
Bravo gents!!!
Fantastic job!
Jarvi riffle the invention of a Canadian named Paul Jarvis of Adventures in gold prospecting. The guy builds some beauty high bankers.
You've inspired me to build my own rocker box like that, cheers chris love the work.
Awesome! Good shiny in your pan.
Thank you! Cheers!
I think you are on to something, I love this modern Rocker Box concept. 👍🏻
You two guy are a hoot!!
Omfg when Gadzee was pointing at your tiny sluice, I lost it 😂
For a self made rocker box it certainly does the job of a bought one another lesson in the life of Chris O'Goldy lol new nickname lol. Good laugh with you 2 guys as usual have a great weekend guys.
Ooooooo soooo many options to make the box betterer!
Love the rocker!
Another awesome video full of information and buckets of fun. ❤
I really need to get back out again! 👍🏻⚒️🏴
LOL, its not a school lunch without the thick butter, Vegemite and potato chip sammy!.
The key to a good vegimite sandwich is marmite 😂😂😂
I enjoyed your video (first-timer). I loved the banter, so I have subscribed.
One idea I had was if you have a creek or stream with gold in it you could make a sluice or catch system to just leave in place and then check it once or twice a year. Idk what designs would work, but maybe you could use like that plate with holes that’s bent like ripples with miners moss underneath and set it in a metal or cement rectangle to prevent it from being washed away during floods.
The channel ask Jeff Williams says he checks the huge water pipes that go under roads as they have bends in it. It’s the pipes that lets a stream go from one side of the road to the other. I can’t of the name. He used a vacuum pack when it’s dry. So that’s one version of a permanent type sluice system I’ve seen.
You absolutely can, but it's illegal to do so in basically every state and territory on earth.
I watch a lot of your videos. I've been a prospector for 50 years. Compared to most of the prospecting videos out there yours are by far the most informative and fun to watch. Keep up the great content.
Wow, thanks!
Hello, from Oregon, USA! Thoroughly enjoy your videos. Thank you!
Nice concept, I can't wait until you perfect it. Good work, nice gold.
❤ it😊
Keep up the good work...
A foot operated 'treadle' could make it more accurate, especially with a flywheel [like an old world sewing machine] and a hand operated bilge, could really make it epic.
Outside of a bilge, being able to feed water in with a small container [even a shower bag would work] and make the job easier, more reliable, and faster.
You might want to try using a square or flat bottom shovel to better skim the top of the clay layer in a more even fashion. It might do a better job of getting the gold than the pointed curved shovel.
Love this Vid guys. Glad I came across your channel
Awesome! Thank you!
great video as usual, Bunnings have to sponsor you
I have bought buckets and picks etc. from them because of your videa's.
Keep them coming Chris.
What the Gadze edit was that Chris? Start watching at 11:45 and look as far back in the creek as you can. A pair of legs just materialize out of nowhere.
It's my sweatpants that got away many months ago, first sighting in many months
Have you thought of putting a foot pedal on the rocker box - a wedge hanging off the side just above the curved bit, you can then either use your foot to rock it while you scoop, or you can use the handle - also maybe add a bend to the handle so you can rock from either side.
Awesome show my friend.. Truly well done..
awesome, have a wonderful day!
Nice going Chris. Do like your rocker. Nice and light weight and seems to work really well. Keep up the great work 😁👍
Thanks 👍
Hey
Vo-Gus Prospecting , an idea: there are jabbie pumps with atached buckets, couldnt you take one of those and attach it to a sluice box? it has a one way valve so it lets dirt in and if you pump back it goes a seperate hose through the one way valve, im not sure if its allowed because you said dredges are not allowed, but this one would be a manual dredge basically
Good stuff!
very cool chris I might have to be makin one of those rockerboxes
Not bad at all looking forward to the new videos with tons of gold thanks for sharing see you on the next one👍🏼👊🏼 p.s. that’s galena (lead ore in your short video 😬
Bobby Duke would be proud of that walk
Good stuff
Got yourself a new subscriber you guys are great .
Amazing very good.
The coast of where i live, bedrock is 1000's of feet below ground, a bedrock is fairly deep here, a most creeks dont go that far here, mostly Sand and gravel here, some rockin places ,not alot of gold. And hardrock is excellent gold, if you can find it, so not much mining locally,
I see the bunnings bucket chair is a good high for the rocker box.
Good job Chris! Cobbles.
Thanks!
You're right about the butter (definately don't use margarine), but totally disagree about the vegemite. I put on copious quantiies, particualrly nice on toast. I started using the reduced salt variety, tastes just the same, probably because salty vs very salty tastes just the same.
Enjoy your vegemite. We have peanut, almond, cashew, and, wait for it, HEMP BUTTER! The nutritional powerhouse made from the only plant that can save the world! Golden days to you kind sir. Thanx for all the knowledge and wisdom.
As often as my wife and I watch y’all, I was surprised to find that we weren’t subscribed to your channel.
I like the rocker box idea, I wanna make one eventually. But I reckon there would be a way to hook up an old kick drum pedal next to it so you could rock hands free
Vo-Gus,
Will drop a text to Bunning ( tho must be honest and tell'em i shant be a customer as i'm up here in "the US of Canada"). They cain't ignore us all !
You dinna ask my advice, so i won't say drop a small pebble between the bottoms of the buckets when nesting them and they can't cling together, nor would i say turn the nut half way down on the Jobbyplate and cut off the top half of the screw / bolt and then screw off the nut ( cleaning / straightening the threads ) which cuts in half the screwing / unscrewing time ( time is Golden ).
What little i know of that land has me leary of crocs and even putting a foot in a bathtub or crick has me trembling... ☆
First guy ever seeing using rocker and what you describes is exactly correct far as I can tell, that right there is a great invention that could go along way with the right concepts
You said a lot of good things people should know.
Sometimes I'm smart
💙 Love you guys 💛
Thanks for the vegamite tip 😂
Quality video thanks guys!
You should build something out of an old fot operated sewingmachine to rock the box! A fot operated viggle setup haha
If you Have to use a quarter inch classifier, and I See that you Do, A good old Garrett quarter inch classifier will fit directly into your bucket, saving you one step in your process 👀‼️ Just saying 🤔🧐👍
I like the "old-tech" style of the rocker box.
A suggestion for product development
Take a look at ww1 trench pumps used by British forces in ypres. It used a rocking motion to pump water.
Now, put a water pump, probably a diaphragm pump and while you rock, you pump the water 💧
Love the vids❤
This is gold!!
I think you have to take Gadzee to a decent pay streak. He has been suffering lately from a lack of decent gold! Love both your channels, I watch you both every week. 👍🇦🇺❤
Man i wish I could just go to the creek and find gold. Another great video
had an idea that may work with your rocker box. attach some bungy ropes on one side so you can use your foot on the box if you get my drift. and that would free up both hands.. :) just and idea might work..
The sound was out and i said wow now i am imagening kris saying a little dirty gold lots of black sand...finally about 90...m
ah ha tis the gravel bar of legend ..... I see it vanishing before my eyes. Very cool use of a road sign,
There is a distinct lack of road signage in Wales and I am now considering the thought that there are an awful lot of rocker boxes with village names tourists can't pronounce on the bottom..(of course its also possible they've been swiped and cashed in for scrap)
great result btw,
Reedy creek must have been an insanely rich resource when it was first discovered (thinking of women glowing and men plundering whilst eating vegemite sandwiches, flowing beer and chundering)
Thanks for sharing the lesson. extremely useful stuff
#Bunnings buckets
myself, I'm a bit curious if you can calculate where the stream's flow was like 1,000-10,000 years ago, it should be untouched land if there haven't been any mines there. maybe you can find out via some Australian geological institute or similar. you fly over with a ground radar. GPR. it penetrates through loose material down to the bedrock if it is not too thick with loose material. then you can see the lowest point in a valley. there the first flow of material should have traveled with hopefully gold. a stream does not flow in the same place for thousands of years, it changes over time.
That would be the perfect system for my area. The creeks dry up in the summer. Just pools. Can't use mechanical equipment in our national forest. Hope it pans put and you make a few. Like to have one. 👍👍
Nice work👍
We just flooded again 🤣
Need a drink 🥃 to watch this video 🎶🤗
Love the Prison rocker. Looks like a sluice with a couple of half circles of wood underneath and a handle. I want One! But think I'll wait to see your improvements and the price you charge for yours. .y congratulations to the ex-prisoner.
Wider runners on the rocker box, with a foot pedal for rocking it and gravity feed a bucket of water (that last one is someone else's idea from the comments).
Was wondering if you would do a video or 2 using fluid beds if you already have them of course would love to see the pros and cons vs a river sluice or highbanker
"An infestation of Gadzees, like antibiotic resistant syphilis"😂😂 i lost focus for a bit😂😂
Haha i mix with butter until golden then spread yum im from UK so it's marmite for me ❤❤❤
You need to make a foot pedal for your rocker box it works pretty good and keep both hands free
Two hands is better than 1 I guess
I'd build one but couldn't handle Gadzee ridiculing me. great vid
Hahaha
Hi Chris, we have a gravel bar on an inside bend, also has a rapid beside it, test paniing on the top shows no gold, how far would you dig to try and find some gold? We are in NZ. love your vids, you and Gadzee are a comedy trio 🤣
Just curious: have you tried classifying into the bucket, agitate the bucket so that the gold goes to the bottom, pour off all material on top keeping the black sand, move to next spot, repeat. When you agitate the bucket, rig up a way to pump air in the bottom of the bucket so that it has very small bubbles. Seems like you could process a lot of material but would the gold have time to settle in the bottom of the bucket?
Would be interested to see how much gold you could pull out of your tailings after not rocking the rocker box. Second run with rocking.
I think you need to add Buddings buckets to your merch listings, please.
I was thinking of a frankin rocker box with a high banking like top section attached to the sluce like rockerbox
Idea: Engineer a way for the rocking back and forth to also pump in the water
That would work
