Across 3 Disney theme parks was a classic and beloved attraction which Walt Disney himself picked out. Over time however, the world grew and times had changed leaving the abandoned theme park relics as the only reminder of their existence. But now there is even a brighter future for the extinct Disney Skyway.

Something worth noting too: Doppelmayr, which constructed the Skyliner, acquired Von Roll and its technologies in 1996 - meaning that the Skyliner really is in many a spiritual sequel to the Skyway.

As a cableway company, Von Roll mostly built chairlifts at ski resorts. They did fairly well in North America where people still regard them fondly, but the company faltered in Europe and never built anything in Australia/NZ. With consolidation of the industry after the introduction of expensive new technology such as detachable grips on chairs and gondolas, they were unlikely to survive in an environment where there was intense competition over price and technology.

Interesting...I wonder if they’ll update Tomorrowland’s “PeopleMover” . It’s one of the few rides that doesn’t have a long wait time.

GMAMEC, the PeopleMover at the Magic Kingdom became more popular recently, and it has longer wait times, because it’s one of the few Disney rides without fast pass. It’s now currently closed for refurbishment, but it will come back as the PeopleMover.

It's amazing just how much history Disney has of cancelled and abandoned projects, and nearly bankrupt at one time, and with none of their parks opening, movies and shows on halt, delayed or simply cancelled, and many stores closed I feel there's going to be a wave of content coming from them within the next couple of years. The big parks will eventually recover as a whole, but I think individual attractions might suffer as they try to make up the lost revenue from months of not operating.

I will never forget my father and I meeting Mr. Disney on a weekend following the first fatal accident at Disneyland back in the 1960's. We drove down to Anaheim from our home in LA, and the park was almost completely vacant that early morning. The place was next to the Matterhorn fence, and while making the turn, I remember Mr. Disney standing in the spot the poor man died after unfastening his seat belt, days before, standing up and plummeting to his death. Walt was overwhelmed with tears at the time. My father, a dentist spent the better part of an hour consoling Mr. Disney on one side of a nearby bench, while I sat on his opposite side. I remember Mr. Disney saying to my father with tears in his eyes, "Norm, this isn't what I intended. I built this place for people to bring their families and be happy." My dad responded that it wasn't his fault, and talked it through for a while. We departed and Mr. Disney returned to his home. I remember him calling my dad to thank him for his kindness and compassion. At truly decent man, I believe Walt Disney would be dismayed at what the money-grubbers did to his company and what it ultimately became.
Lastly, my friend and I often walk the bayfront properties in OC's Newport Beach, where much of the Disney clan still reside. We ran into a Disney family member, all of whom have little or no contact with the company their uncle founded. Sad.

I was working in Fantasyland Merchandise the day the "Janitor" fell from the gondola. He attempted to use a tree below to "soften" the fall. He forgot the "objects in motion will remain in motion" rule. He let go directly over a tree, but he continued his forward motion and hit the pavement directly. It happened immediately after "rope drop" and almost all Fantasyland Merchandise Cast members we called to form a human wall around the stricken man. He was declared deceased in route to the hospital. I was fortunate(?) and was one of a few Cast members directed to remain in a store (one per each store).

In the early 60's Seattle hosted the world's fair. At the world fair they had a skyride that was just like the one at Disneyland. The skyride from that world's fair still exists. Seattle Center is where the old World's Fair was held. They used to have a big display in the Center House that explained the history of the area. The display also mentioned that the Pacific Science Center, Monorail and the Space Needle were all originally created for that World's Fair.
My Mom told me that Elvis Presley shot a movie at the Seattle World's Fair. I guess you can see the skyride in the background. I'll be honest I've never watched that movie myself. My Mom is a Elvis fan and shared it with me.

    Abandoned things and Disney: 🤝
I'm glad the concept was revived as the Disney Skyliner. The Skyliner is a convenient system. It adds one more transportation option for guests at the parks and resorts

  • @markjensen7091

I wouldn't be surprised if there is an additional reason as to why they were removed. Aside from the supports in the Matterhorn breaking apart and literally removing the whole external superstructure to repair the supports. The other issue is non compliance to the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA. The newer transport system at Disney World, follows those guidelines. Whereas the older ride was designed in an era without ADA guidelines. If you look at the rides, all of the stations are built on a hill or employ stairs to get to the attraction (using the height to lift guests up above the crowd faster), the gondolas are very small where weight could be an issue (Americans are fatter now), and very limited space for a wheel chair. In a sense and a time where Disney didn't have the financial position, it makes sense to abandon the ride instead refurbish them. However, the lack of the ride being in place puts a HUGE pressure on the railroad to move guests around the park. You either have to walk from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland or you have the ride the railroad around the entire park just to get to the previous station.

    • @txpipes61
      @txpipes61 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Everything you have said is quite true. The Skyway did not meet the ADA standards, and unfortunately could not be updated to meet those requirements. However, with the success of the new Disney Skyliner, I would not be surprised to see a new Disney Skyway make a comeback. Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, the successor to VonRoll Ropeways, has been quite successful in not only installing new systems across the country, but in updating classic VonRoll control and drive systems. The old VonRoll systems were quite labor intensive, requiring people for catching, loading, and dispatching the gondolas. The newer Doppelmayr systems are all automatic - the cars come in, the doors open, people get off, new riders get on, doors close, and car is dispatched - all while the car is slowly moving through the station. It is amazing at how quickly the new cars can be loaded and dispatched, as opposed to the old VonRoll cabins. I would love to see Disney bring back the Skyway to their parks, only in a modern, updated ride system. I love the VonRoll rides, but we have to allow for progress to really move us forward - no pun intended!

@Granpda Corey The American's with Disabilities Act was signed by a Republican in 1990 by George H W Bush, not Bill Clinton. His son George W Bush amended the law in 2008 to provide new and updated rules and laws. The ADA's most obvious thing they do is yes sideways/parking stalls, etc... BUT The law also covers other things as well. It governs employers by providing equal access to employment even though the person maybe disabled. It prevents employers from laying off or firing an employee due to a permanent life altering injury that may have been sustained at work (prior to the law if you got hurt on the job you got fired). The ADA laws also govern building codes and providing easy access for those with disabilities. In regards to Disney and the old gondolas the system most likely would not be allowed to function under the ADA codes. This is why you see a drastic difference between the old Sky Way ride and the new Gondola transportation system that Disney uses at Disney World.

@Granpda Corey Hate to tell you this Grandpa Corey, but the Americans with Disabilities Act covers far more than sidewalks and crosswalks. It would indeed cover the gondolas for the sky ride. Disney is required by law to make "reasonable accommodation" for their disabled guests. Exactly what that is would be determined. If you notice, the newer sky rides have gondolas with wide doors for boarding access, as well as accessible boarding platforms. The existing VonRoll 101 sky rides that are still in operation have been "grandfathered" as existing before the ADA went into effect. Working in Human Resources I am all too aware of the broad ranging implications of the ADA, which provides for equal access for everyone.

The Sky Ride at Cedar Point also has an abandoned section. There was a second Skyride that took guests from the midway back to Frontier Town. It was removed in 1985. One of the stations is still in use for restrooms near the Cedar Creek Mine Ride. The other station was torn down to make way for the Iron Dragon. I remember riding that section of the Skyride as a kid because it went through the woods.

I’m surprised Jake didn’t mention the Tomorrowland end of the Disneyland Skyway. They blocked off the enter/exit portals with simple painted wooden walls at first, then more permanently stuccoed walls as it made for a great storage room. Since it also housed the tunnel the train passed through and was attached to Carousel of Progress/America Sings/Innoventions, simply walling it up and turning it into a storage room made the most sense.

In the area where I grew up, there were several amusement parks (at least five that I remember) that had these type of skyway rides. They were always fun to ride, but everyone of them are gone now. A couple because the parks are no longer around, but the others were just removed from the sites. They all seemed to disappear at about the same time, which makes me wonder if the death of the Disney maintenance worker had some ripple effect throughout the industry. I miss those rides...just another part of my childhood that's now just a memory.

I rode the WDW Skyway in 90s. I think another issue adding to its demise was sporadic closures due to threat of lightning. We get almost daily potential for sudden thunderstorms in spring & summer in central FL - coinciding with WDW's high volume period. I imagine that limited ride capacity & disgruntled guests with shut downs (especially after waiting in a long line to ride) just added to the problems. Having ridden both, the Skyliner is a much superior, practical, & greatly longer ride.

Unrelated to the skyway, I've been to Disney land Paris back in 2008 and I just remember walking around the park trying out rides for 3 days straight and I was impressed at how well put together and how much little detail is put into a park of its size. But when I see videos like these and I see images of how much bigger the Florida resort is from a birds eye view I really struggle to comprehend the shear magnitude of Walt Disney World. Just knowing that it has that same level of detail put into it that Disney land Paris has, I just really can't fathom how overwhelming a place like that could be. So it's absolutely understandable why Disney world has such an enriched history of cancelled and abandoned rides or buildings. It's something so big that you wouldn't be able to do everything in a weekend, and for a lot of people, too costly to stay a full week. So they'll just do the main attractions, leaving out the smaller ones that still cost millions to develop and run, so they cut their losses and abandon them.

Jake, it's always a treat to find a new BSF: Abandoned video in the line-up. I didn't actually remember the Skyway rides until I saw this and now I can see how really interesting they were. I particularly liked the Alpine look of the Florida Skyway station. I've revisited several of your past videos, since I love abandoned explorations that're well done. There are so many "Semi-posterior Explorers"---if you catch my meaning---on TH-cam who can't seem to be bothered with researching their videos, sometimes even adding their own BS to the narrative, and even adding the word "Haunted!" or "Scary" to the description... Thanks. Stay safe, everyone.

The gondola ride has always been one of my favorite attractions. Despite living in Florida my whole life, I'd never been to Disney World until around 2013 when I was 19 years old, so I never rode the Disney sky ride. Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL however has a system dating to the same era which is still in operation, I'm not positive but considering the age of the equipment it too is likely a VonRol system. I have fond many fond memories of tossing coins off of it with my best friend Mike, and escaping the parents to make out with girlfriends.

I never knew Disneyland was actually the first park to have this type of attraction! The one I'm most familiar with is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Sky Glider. You get great views of the ocean from it, but the ride vehicle is built like a seat so your feet are hanging down and the lap bar isn't very impressive, giving you the feeling that you're about to fall at any minute, while the whole ride vehicle appears to be just loosely attached to the wire. Genuinely one of the scariest rides at the Boardwalk, I love it.

Let me start by saying that I always love the facts in your videos. The Skyway only suffered short term closures during the construction of the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn was inspired during the same trip and Walt Disney began to think about placing the Matterhorn in Fantasyland during 1956. It didn't enter full planning for Disneyland until 1957, but the primary reason Walt chose the Skyway was so that the main tower could be easily dismantled and the fide could be rerouted onto a temporary route during the Fantasyland/Tomorrowland expansion of 1957-1959. The Skyway was rerouted to go over the Autopian and pass to the north of the Matterhorn construction site until the rock work could be completed half way down the Matterhorn. I've seen Tony Baxter show film footage of this at the D23 Exposition.

There is a vintage Von Roll Sky Ride still in operation at Cedar Point in Ohio. It’s one of the park’s highest-capacity rides; people definitely use it for transporation.

This might be my favorite episode, given that full circle back to hope and innovation! Definitely something uplifting that brightened my day. 😊. Thank you for all of your videos! (And, as a complete 180, I hope that Closed for the Storm is able to release soon!)

In regards to the abandoned Fantasyland station at Disneyland in California: they actually used it during Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween party back in 2013! I don't know if they used it at all before or after, but it was definitely there the year I went. They ended up using it as a dragon's den, with glowing red eyes and billowing smoke coming out of the abandoned station. Of course, you weren't allowed to go up there, but I always thought it was neat that they ended up repurposing the structure in a unique way. I bet not a lot of people knew the history behind the structure the dragon laid inside!

Went on the new Skyliner in March 2020 and it was awesome! I didn’t know it was so new but that makes sense now that I think of how clean everything was haha
I stayed at Pop Century Resort and it was a really cool way to get to Hollywood Studios, and was so fast!!

The biggest issue with fixing the tower inside the Matterhorn was access: they'd have had to rip open the top of the mountain to get at the works to replace the fatigued parts, and then put the top back together.
Pity they didn't turn the Disneyworld stations into cafes or shops or whatever.
