Omg my Mom had this 45 record in the 70's. We would push all the living room furniture to the edges of the room and my brothers and sister and Mom would all get down and boogie. What a blast!! This song is everything. Love it!!!!!
Me too.i was always dancing to this song when they played it on the radio.an amazingly fantastic song.i heard it today, and right away I stared to dance and make my own dance moves.a classic for sure.when I lived in new York, forham Rd. In the bronx.lots of dancing, free style.always.💡😁⭐🤩👍
I remember back in 70's in Queens my mother used to give rent parties if any kids from that era in n.y.c ever remembers this was one of the main records being played on the stereo.
I am white and so enjoyed sharing this song from my youth with a prodigy appre tice of mine! i call him my "GRANDSON" if i ever had kids he would have been my choice for a son or grandson. i really enjoy sharing old comedy and music i knew growing up with him, the look of surprise and fascination is worth it ! plus i am teaching him more about our cultural "SHARED" history. GOD BLESS EVERYONE!
This came out about 1972, and it still rocks much better than so called music today!! Rest in piece brother, your music will continue into the 3000’s!!
Goodness glaciers the 4th millennium you're mentioning!??!?! Oh I hope this copy survives beyond the 2500s...Hopefully the human races keeps this alive for other species in outer space to enjoy.
Memories when the corner store that sold records existed. I did the same thing! Once I heard a song I really loved playing on the radio. I would run to the record store around the corner and purchase it
From the Summer of '73 on, this played at every block party and family reunion I attended! I may have been only 3 or 4 when I first heard Soul Makossa, but I remember stopping whatever I was doing and dancing every time it played...and it played A LOT back in the day. Even nearly 50 years(!) later, I still need to get up and dance. So happy Mr Dibango was able to receive royalties/writing credit from Rihanna and MJ.
Great point Geri. This is such an underrated and historic 1-hit wonder classic. It can be argued that this is very early influence from everything from Hip/Hop-Rap to House Dance Music, R&B/Funk and many other forms of modern pop music. I think MJ sampling this to Want to Be Starting Something about a decade after its first release gave its first set of exposure to then young music fans such as myself. And then more recently here in the 2000's Rihanna exposing this to Millennial era born music fans as well. Still great listening this 45-plus years after it's debut in 1973.
Hi Geri, I'm certainly with you on this one...grew up around Maryland & Washington DC back in the day, and the first time I heard this in '72 I was 5...and it was always played on the radio and I HAD to DANCE whenever I heard it...my Ma loved it too and went out and bought it...she also loved Issac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield (which some people thought was 'strange' for a white lady, as if really good music even has a 'color') so I heard their records growing up as well...you keep on DANCING!...and I will, too!
MJ was inspired by the beginning of this song to make “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.’” Then Rihanna used that for “Don’t Stop The Music.” How far this song has gone.
Back in my DAY when this song played EVERYONE tore the floor, street, whatever you were standing on was burnt from us dancing. Those were the days!!!!👍🏾👍🏾👌🏾👌🏾✊🏾✊🏾❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
The beat is insane!!!!HOT 🔥 CLASSIC....! This jam used to get every one up to dance, what friggin' memories...Fun times, Happy times... Hit NYC likes a category 10 storm... Amazing' remix Papacat, Love it so much that it gets inside me and makes me want to dance like crazy !! 🎵🎶💃💃 Thank you..! 👍
R .I.P. Manu.. loved this song since it came out ..matter of fact it was my only vinyl I saved..and recently went to a 70's party and styled it around my neck with a chain.and they even then played it at the party.
Coney island bump dance to this yes on every block. Playing and dancing even if you couldn't. You got up and grove to this every day. Ever night non stop bklyn. Rides. All dancing godbless this. Hit old school rocks.
1973 Seattle, WA The Golden Horseshoe, jukebox still 3plays on a quarter, while we loved the Philly Sounds this was a rootsy blast of freshness that called our primal spirits to the communal floor of dance. This was my first feel of true tribal on the dance floor and it was a complete and total release of the burdens of the work week or anything that fettered you, it was license to work it out, let it go and join the movement of bodies that surrounded you. It comes and goes out of dance floor consciousness, even as Michael Jackson quoted it in GOT TO BE STARTIN' SOMETHING and Rihanna quoted(how it was sung) MJ in her PLEASE DONT STOP THE MUSIC, though far and away the original still holds sway in itself to make it rain from humidity of body sweat in the room. Thank you DJDCV2!
I was 9 living in the Bronx at 460E182nd St. I thought this song came out in 1976 when I was 13 anyway it was a African dance song that was mostly played in dance competition
I remember it (the original) from '73 I had the '45 rpm single. Same year as the final Vietnam cease fire, the Watergate hearings, and "The Exorcist" at year's end...
I definitely can see this danced to once more in the 2020s, since this song is now 50 years old, it's amazing that even 50 years after it's release in 1972, it still gets you dancing and grooving' whether swaying side to side while sitting, or standing up and breakdancing, that bass guitar, electric guitar, cowbell, and even the drums is what makes this song even more special, not just the lyrics. If I ever do hear this played in some 70's party, whether in a club or on a cruise ship, I definitely would love to see how people dance to this one. If you like, pitch it up just enough to hear it in a different key than expected, say in VirtualDJ. You'd be surprised at how it sounds.
I think i'm your biggest fan LOL! you do these classics like back in the days of the disco era. any possibility you will be doing Genius of Love? :-) Keep on doing this brother, bang up job, Kudos!
Omg my Mom had this 45 record in the 70's. We would push all the living room furniture to the edges of the room and my brothers and sister and Mom would all get down and boogie. What a blast!! This song is everything. Love it!!!!!
I also bought this 45 in the 80's and unfortunately I left it in the car in the back window and..... warped! My happiest time turned in to a say day.
elsamere*Yeah I know about pushing the furniture up against the wall and getting down.

I ran to the neighborhood record store in 73 and bought the 45. One of the best jams ever!
Me too!
The Record Factory on the SW corner of 8th Ave and Irving. Couldn't hardly wait to get it home to spin it!
@@kidmack3556 Word! I feel you! Happy Kwanzaa!

I grew up in Hollis, Queens, this was the jam at the Parks in the Mid 70s. Thank you for bringing your piece of history to our world. RIP Brother..
This was the theme song for a dance show in Mississippi called Black Gold back in the late 70’s early 80’s.
This was the the riff I first learnt when I first picked up the Sax in 1979
MJ was inspired by the beginning of this song to make “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin.’” Then Rihanna used that for “Don’t Stop The Music.” How far this song has gone.
Power 99 FM, Philly, PA... They would play this during Rush Hour, and Saturday Night... Golden Boy, where are you???
