i never imagined i'd use the word perfect to describe a song .the voice and the emotion coming through from the heart is a perfect matchup to get the full impact of the lyrics .just phenomenal. the best i've heard her do. and the guitar just tops everything off. she's made it into a dirge/lament .it's tragic that a song has to be so magnificent about war, death and loss. in my view this will go down as GREAT. to be treasured and kept by mankind . i hope this is used to help mankind change his ways .

I totally agree, David - I felt the same when I heard this song the first time with her wonderful voice. Only the lack of sound of any guitars made me add several guitar tracks to this piece myself and I tried to do it in the style of Mark Knopfler. Of course it would have been best if he had played it in person. There is this rumour/story that of course Knopfler was asked (by Joan's producer Alan Abrahams) to play the guitar parts, but refused to do so because Joan had changed some parts of Knopfler's lyrics. Well, don't know if it's true, but it's reported here in the comments by Gregor Anders.
@@kendoplex my bad about not seeing that it was you who added the very well done guitar tracks - you certainly "did your job" . . . you had me fooled all the way : ) I recognized that it was a different rendition from the original but I sort of expected that due to what I thought was an entirely new recording session with Mark and Joan - again, she has such an angelic voice but with a full and powerful midrange - just unbelievable - there is NO mistaking her voice for ANYONE else that's for sure . Well done!

So it worked like intended and like I wrote in the desciption below the video: "Brothers in Arms" is a well known song by Dire Straits and I like it very much, espacially the kind of Mark Kopfler's sound and playing his Gibson Les Paul. But then I found this song in a version by Joan Baez and was impressed by her wonderful voice. This made me think of a version with added guitar sounds which the track was missing. So I added some Gibson Les Paul sounds ('58 Gibson Les Paul V.O.S.) as well as a Strat ('Eric Clapton "Blackie"') and an acoustic guitar for background. If the listener thinks the guitars belong to this track right from the beginning then I did the job, because the intention was to retain the character of this wonderful piece of music."

Joan Baez is a great hero of the people. She is not merely a wonderful songstress. I marched with her in an anti-war parade in Los Angeles that concluded with her singing songs to inspire us. I will always hold her in my heart.
