The insrumental is the music that plays during Phase 1. The lyrics drop at the start of Phase 2 and it fucking slaps harder than an alcoholic stepfather 69 beers in.
What's more interesting is when your playing the story quest when you fight this boss the first time the first phase have a different theme called "the past of no return" that's also a banger and when you get to when the the second phase you get the instrumental of wildfire and the last phase then the actual song
That first big vocal drop is also timed perfectly with a huge impressive attack from the boss. It's a really amazing moment when you first encounter it in game
Hoyo uses a lot of clever musical tricks, in this instance they had A trap with no return loop for the first phase of the boss, then this song enters in the second phase as the boss is channeling a special attack, during the fight there's a special loop-cut version of this track. They also use a small cut of Wildfire instrumental version in a cutscene prior to this fight as the MC gets their new power They also use these tricks in Genshin Impact, where they have 2 tracks that line perfectly (Eg: A Shard from Past Glories and Seething Animosity), and they play together, but one of them is at 0 volume, when you enter/exit combat, the game fades the current out and the other one in, causing a musical change that does not disrupt the melody, it feels extremely dynamic and amazing to explore the Chasm and have this incredible musical experience in that game Other game that uses this technique is NieR Automata, but they do it through the entire game and absolutely brilliantly, every song in the game dynamically morph between vocals, no vocals, 8-bit, calmer version according to gameplay
We can say what we want about Hoyo, but their games have some AMAZING people working on them. Especially in the music department. Honkai has some absolute headbangers in it. Genshin, for all its faults, when it decides to go hard, it goes HARD and Star Rail... well, it's already going hard.
Not just play during the soundtrack, there is a very specific part of the song, which is come always when a very specific attack of the boss. And it's played under the rerun bossfights too. With the same attack. This bossfight is epicly well built. I dare to say, when I first played it, I first thinked: "That's all? That's not much" Then I realized, I just finished the first stage of the bossfight. And when that specific boss attack I already know, it's maybe the best bossfight I played a long time ago. I can't wait when you reach that bossfight in some playtrough video. 🤣
Did the Cocolia fight yesterday and when that big drop happened, the goosebumps were INSANE Thanks for this breakdown, I'm learning more about drumming from you (:
I was massively taken by surprise when this song started playing. This game made an amazing first impression and I'm looking forward to the future of this game.
Great video, I play piano myself and just could not comprehend how the drums and guitar work together. Love the way you broke it down for us mere mortals to understand. Keep up the good content. :)
This whole boss fight is quite a ride... from the lead-up into it, the first half of the fight, the scene in between, then second half of the boss fight, and the finale. Easily one of the BEST boss fights I have played in any game. The music (including this song) is used so expertly to elevate the fight to something absolutely emotional and memorable.
It’s always great to watch someone with proper knowledge to react and explain about things so people can see (in this case hear) song from different perspectives and what is great that it’s all for ‘free’, thank you for making this video. I’m looking forward to your future contents.
best part about the song? experiencing it the first time during that boss battle. It was EPIC. and then playing further to unlock it on the express as a background track =D
as someone who never learn music, i appreciate all the analysis and explanations on why the instrumentation sounds so good! thank you for the amazing content!
Found this channel in my youtube home today. I play Genshin since the first Venti banner (Q4 2020 I think) and started Star Rail, one of the things I love the most about Genshin is the music (my favorite rn is Die Mittsommernacht Fantasie), and Star Rail isn't really falling behind in that regard. I was already convinced of that by listening to "take the journey", althoug that one's short... But when I listened to this I was like "OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT" and I've been listening to that song at least once everyday. I love commentaries and reacts, expecially from people more knowledgeable than me about music, that's also emotionally invested when listening to these songs. Subbed.
Cocolia fight gave me chills. What's pretty crazy is this is just chapter 1... and I'm already sold. I can't imagine how they'll top the Jarillo expedition, but I already see some hints of the epicness in Xianzhou. We'll certainly find out soon!
You know, the breathiness of the vocal and the way the drums slowly echo during the very beginning is what told me this is going to be a banger. It just had the feel of someone calmly ascending the stairs towards their foe, on a mountain peak, surrounded by roaring skies and giant monoliths. And you can be damn sure their holding their best weapon in hand.
7:17 i think that came unexpectedly and the clap section was short because normally in the game the song synchs that climax with stuff in the boss fight. When you or boss lands a "big hit" The slower parts take up the parts of the fight leading up to the big attack moments
Hoyo loves to use the music to tell the story as much as the writing tells the story. The first time the song hits when your playing the game this is a once in a life moment that cant be repeated. When it happens and you were not expecting something like it in a boss fight you get that WOW moment.
Oh yeah I was surprised too, but this song plays during the boss fight xD At first its just instrumental, but at a certain point the vocals come in and completely slaps you across the face, believe you me xD
The first verse and chorus are played during a cutscene leading into the final section of the fight. The second verse is looped (no vocals) during the fight half of the fight. The bridge and second chorus are played when Cocolia drops her ultimate, and the song loops from the breakdown with another bridge and 3rd chorus until the end of the fight. It's just really well written.
It is an absolutely brilliant piece, and I would *love* to see a discussion *after* you play this part of the game. My favourite so far. It’s what I set my Train music to!
I usually play videogames with other sounds at background, I thought it was a sound of the stream and didn't realize it was the boss fight. Is an amazing OST
For me this game came out of no where and just put its claws in me. The whole production quality is unreal. You can tell this was a labor of love. Thanks for your artistic perspective!
When she first dropped that meteor thing and i heard the song take off I couldn’t believe it. A mobile game shouldn’t have such good presentation i swear
8:10 It does and it's timed in an INCREDIBLE way throughout the fight. Extremely minor spoilers below. The break point with only the clapping is the end of the first half of the boss fight, so it only loops that _first half_ of the song then plays that intense transition during a cutscene shift. After it drops and you get the more chaotic and energetic part of the song looping throughout the rest of the fight. It's _extremely_ clever and makes it feel incredibly smooth while playing regardless of when you finish each section of the fight. It's just another way Hoyoverse has shown us their mastery of sound design in their games (seriously, they drop the ball in everything else once in a while but the music is ALWAYS amazing without fail or exception).
Thanks for doing this video! I like seeing these analyses, but, I haven’t seen it from the perspective of a drummer before, so it was very informative. 10:25 about that guitar fill, So, most of the song is at a slower tempo, but, as soon as it goes into that acoustic guitar moment, the tempo increases. The guitar is only playing sixteenths, but accents the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, and 15th. So, it’d sound like 123 123 123 123 12 12 groupings due to the accents. The first four accented sixteenths happen in groups of 3, and since the change happens so suddenly, by the time the pattern comes around again, the tempo change and different grouping makes it sound like it’s in a different time signature, but, it’s still 4/4, throwing the listener for a loop until the drums solidify the rhythm. The guitar’s gritty tone and manner of playing the notes in such a way where the tone isn’t very clean makes the 13th and 15th sixteenth note of the pattern unclear, making the syncopations harder to distinguish. But, after hearing the track enough times, you’ll be able to pick it up. Absolutely love Wildfire, such an amazing track, thank you for making this vid
Really, this song reminds me of the 2010s. Something like this was used for the Highmoon Studio Transformers games. War For Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron.
Cocolia's fight is my absolute favorite in Star Rail. I re-do the fight in Echo's of War every week just to re-live the fight and this epic soundtrack.
this song gives me chills every time I listen to it. Literally went through all of my echo of war chances for the week just to hear it accompanying the fight. Honestly my favorite song rn, glad to see someone breaking it down.
This song is epic when matched against the boss fight - brought a level of intensity to the fight when the vocals kicked in that you do not get often. This was well executed.
It's even more impressive IN the game because you very quickly realize it is synced up with the action in the fight, which just elevates this whole thing even more.
It does indeed play during the boss fight and honestly I was pleasantly surprised to have acoustics in a boss fight instead of having it go super hard the whole time. Having it build up made it great.
It's the song that plays during the boss battle. I loved it the second it started playing. I was hoping I'd get the record. Which I did, and now it plays every time I'm on the train.

When I heard this song while on that stage, I kept checking my music player if I was playing music on background or accidentally open some ads, at first I didn't expect this song was from the game I'm playing
The song in the boss fight is not just in a loop it changes depending on what you do if you go heavy hitting all out with ultimate attacks the song then goes hard as well same when the boss goes into her ult. but it goes back to the regular form when you are doing normal attacks.
Hii, this video got randomly recommended to me but I really enojoyed it, keep up the content mate. I was blown away by the song while playing star rail, just a small petition to anyone who reads my comment: can you give me suggestions of songs that sound "similar" to this one? I don't usually listen to this type of music and I don't know where to begin when it comes to exploring that genre
The song itself is incredible, but the way the devs used it in the Cocolia fight is just legendary. And Wildfire took what was already an epic boss fight up several levels.
I don't play games much with surround sound headphones. I listen with my AKGs, and when I got to this track, it has no vocals. How they implement it. The music is such a big deal that it DROWNS OUT THE VA. And I'm an audio engineer. I mix this stuff. That would drive me nuts if it wasn't for the fact this track hits so hard, and so perfectly. This games been out 2 weeks. It can calm down. Take a seat. Let's not produce this tier of gold THAT fast. Jesus. XD
The voiced proper wildfire kicks in at the first attack of the second phase, it's great, like childe doing whale attack at the whalesong part of his third phase dbfncnvmv, just "you made a choice go fight against your fate" while bitch shaves off a third of your healthbar its amazing
do you think you'd do a vid reaction to wildfire during the boss fight as it escalates. that fight really had me in my seat. such good production. imo ofc.
Thanks for watching! I probably won't be uploading my gameplay of the boss fight as its own video, but I did stream it live here on my TH-cam channel if you want to go back and watch that VOD!
I am not sure if you have gotten to the boss fight yet, but Wildfire to me is what brings the whole story of Belobog together. From the different people of the world, both under and over, and all funneled into the Trailblazer to, for lack of a better term, open the sky once more. It is an amazing cap stone to a great fight, a great story, and great kick off to a game.
My head cannon is that this was a song Serval and her band used to play. And this song and soundtrack go so much harder than i thought a gatcha game would go. (Ive Never played the other miHoyo games)
Oh you bet they looped it by some arcane computer trickery so that this song fits perfectly and the Big moments of the song links perfectly with the big moments of the fight. Hoyomix are bloody insane music scientists.
This song was sooooo epic and just amazing. Like the whole boss fight was just Epic! Fun little moment for me is that I got Serval to deal the finishing blow to her. XD I tried to time my ults with the climax and high points of the song.
You hear this song in the cutscene then it carries out to the actual boss fight, and the climax triggers with an specific action from the boss, I also think it trigger with one action from us using a badass mechanic, but idk if thats the case or if it just happen to be a coincidence
Watch my reaction to the full boss fight right here! th-cam.com/users/livev-qlEXJ_dU4?feature=share

(Ive Never played the other miHoyo games)
coclia boss fight theme song always give me chills idk why
It feels very much like a "Boss fight" they really nailed it. That's where the chills come from.
Idk if I like it having vocals during the fight as it kinda drowns out cocolia
@@zoxfalcon2510 yup, it's fitting the protagonist getting a power up but honestly for her fight it feels off
i got goosebumps when my team went to the second phase i heard this im like this it guys lets take her down
I think "Wildfire" is the new "Rex Incognito"
My favourite song in game so far
I'm not used to listen to music too much but I love this song
Oh you bet they looped it by some arcane computer trickery so that this song fits perfectly and the Big moments of the song links perfectly with the big moments of the fight. Hoyomix are bloody insane music scientists.
This song was sooooo epic and just amazing. Like the whole boss fight was just Epic! Fun little moment for me is that I got Serval to deal the finishing blow to her. XD I tried to time my ults with the climax and high points of the song.
actually it's impressive as OST, when you are playing and feeing the vibe of the decisive battle, you gotta say"damn sick"
Love how this song messes with you.
- Okay, this is a nice slow little...
- WE MAID A CHOICE COME FIGHT AGAINST YOUR FATE!!!!
You hear this song in the cutscene then it carries out to the actual boss fight, and the climax triggers with an specific action from the boss, I also think it trigger with one action from us using a badass mechanic, but idk if thats the case or if it just happen to be a coincidence
If you're talking about using giant robot fist it's not actually synchronised with the song, you can synch it manually though or by coincidence, yes.
@@x_Psyduck_x well that was a sweet coincidence
Love your reaction!!
