My grandma and great aunt made funnel cake all the time for their church carnivals so the recipe was written down. I saw grandma make it a few times and the first thing I noticed was your batter was too thin. I looked at my grandmas recipe and she only used 3/4 of a cup of milk. She also wrote in bold print to make concentric circles starting from the center out.
Do you remember the recipe? If so, can you please share it here with us? There's nothing as delicious as an old-fashioned recipe from a Grandma who knew how to cook.
You’re right, Kevin. Inside to out…and a thicker batter. However, Paula did say it was too thin?? So, she’ll figure it out being the Southern Gal that she is😁😉👍
You didn’t need two eggs. One egg and less milk would have been perfect. The batter was too thin. Try just using one cup milk and one egg. The bag method would have worked that way and then you pinch it to stop it from coming out. With thicker batter it wouldn’t have run as fast either. A little more sugar in batter too. I’ve made these before and what I just explained works! 😊 ps. I don’t think the oil was right temp cause it shouldn’t hold that much grease inside either. However, you did a great job trying and again. Don’t give up, 3rd times a charm!! ❤️
I just this video, Michael is so cute. I enjoy seeing him in the kitchen with you so much. Yall make a cute couple. I was sitting here laughing out loud watching him getting more of the funnel cake to eat. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.
I’m so glad you’re on YT. I learned how to cook from watching you growing up. I’m now an executive sous chef and still refer to some of your recipes for added extra soul. Either you or my grandma who refuse to let me have her 1918 handwritten herb, medicine and cook book. Lol
Use a dollar store mayo, ketchup, bottles they work great for this batter. You drizzle the batter in a crisscross and don't let it run together so much.
Hi Paula, You can now purchase plastic FUNNEL CAKE CONTAINERS W/MIX inside in your Cake mix/Baking aisle. Saw it at Aldi as well. (They're $3-4 & we have a few of the plastic funnels.) Especially during the Spring/Summers months. My daughter makes delicious FUNNEL CAKES & has experimented with her batter for a long while. I don't even know all of her secrets lol Hugs, Anita S.
The first time I had a funnel cake, one of my close friends had learned to make them in her 9th grade Home-Economics class. After school, she made some for us and I fell in love with them that day. Several years later, funnel cakes (sometimes called Elephant Ears) began showing up in the food booths of our hometown’s fall festival. I would have to buy 2 of them because my father (who always “claimed” he didn’t eat sweets, would eat at least half or more of mine. 😂
I tried these a few months ago. It came out exactly the same Paula. Much harder than most would ever think. I'm not giving up either! I'll use all of the dern flour in this house if I have to 😆. I just have to add. What I love about you Paula, is your honesty, regardless of how it turns out! Hey, nobody's perfect 🥰.
Just in time! We are making funnel cakes for my birthday party tonight and I felt like the recipe was flat. Thank you Thank you Thank you for bringing flavor to my party.
I can't wait to try these, I love all my favorite folks in one room, Paula, Michael, Teresa, and Eddie, love you guys. Thanks for all your hard work making these cooking videos.
Hi my Paula, you are my favorite EVER!!!! I’m from Houston Tx too 💕 The best way I make it: 1 3/4 flour and 3/4 milk plus the 2 eggs and salt and sugar use 3/4 tsp’s of baking POWDER my sweet dolly, that fluffs them right up!!! Love love love you 😘 💕
@Charity S Good morning ☀️ I applaud the attempt but they looked a little crunchy imho. Really wish we would hear from our other friend. We’re going to have to let her know she can’t get so busy or go on vacation without at least checking in every couple days. Hope you are having a great day.
Hi @Charity S. 👋 Mine as well 😋!!! I always have to get two things…my funnel cake and, then later, my frozen banana🥴…sugar overload 🤣😆😂!!!! I pretend the frozen banana is a healthy choice😆🤣😂😉
Hi Paula, if you take a pinch of flour and put it in the oil, it it sinks to the bottom, the oil is not hot enough. If the oil sizzles when you put in the flour that means it is hot and ready. I had never heard of funnel cake or fried dough. Great video Paula.
I'm a purist. Just powdered sugar😋. You might try slowing down when you pour. They are long thin tubes and once criss-crossed over itself, you will get it and 😉
I never heard of elephant ears, now you have me curious to lnow what they look like & I'll have to check them out next. Thank you❣🙋♀️ Have a great weekend❣
Good Morning everyone 💐. Haha Mike said uh oh lol 😂. I love that man, he’s a Trip !! 🤣🤣 McDonald’s ?? Hahhahaha sound like my sons!! Thank you all (Paula and the entire crew for making my Saturday morning.) Xoxoxoxo😘😘
This is my recipe. Your right. Cut back on the milk. 3/4 cup milk whole 2 eggs large 2 Tbsp of white granulated sugar Vanilla 1 tsp Dry ingredients 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 tsp baking powder Mix dry and wet ingredients Oil has to be at 375 degrees Use your funnel you had only filling it 1/2 full. Start in center and work your way to about 6 inches in diameter ,to the out side and crisscross a few times to hold it together.
Hey everyone! Eddie asked if funnel cake and fried dough were the same. Up here in New York state it is not even close. Our fried dough is actually bread dough that's fried.
😀Paula, you and Michael are a "COMEDY TEAM"!!!! I think the Funnel Cake looked GOOD!!!! And by the looks of things, it went well as far as eating too!!!! And you know what they say on "The Andy Griffith Show" - "EATING SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS"!!!!
I don't care for Funnel Cakes, but I still enjoyed the video. Food doesn't always have to look perfect to taste good. I would like to see Miss Paula go back to the drawing board and do another Funnel Cake video.
Hi Paula, new subbie here. Love you on Fox and Friends!! I didn't know squat about funnel cakes until now! Looks like it's basically a large powdered sugar doughnut! Yes?
Hey Paula, have a suggestion for pouring the batter into hot oil. I was watching another channel, Hercules Candies, and when they make their cream filled candies, they have a large funnel, and put a wooden stick, like a wooden spoon handle, so that it fits over hole in funnel end...blocking any liquid from going out. Pour your batter in funnel with stick blocking hole. Hold funnel over oil, lift stick until amount you want is out, then stop flow with stick. Hope this helps.
Dairy Queen used to make a funnel cake sundae... it was the bomb. Now I can try this recipe and make it at home. Love Michael calling you out on recipes. Me and mine do the same❤❤❤
had me giggling , I've seen funnel cakes but actually never eaten one. one day will try looks good . thanks Ira !! thanks Paula, Theresa and Eddie. good to see ya to Micheal. take care all !!!
Looks delicious i do a bread dough and fried up for fried bread with honey butter and Huckleberries butter and use it for Indian toco's yummy might have to thin my batter to try this recipe thanks for sharing take care 💯💞💜💞
Pro Tip: Use 2 Tsp of baking powder and 1 1/2 cups of milk. mix and let it sit. The reaction of the baking powder will make the batter thicker. Definitely use the 2 eggs. Also, let it sit for at least 1/2 hour to hydrate the flour. If it gets too thick, add more milk as you need it. You should just be able to pour it out of a measuring cup spout.
I remember funnel cakes from our county fair and the batter was not that thin. Plus yours does not look right cooked, you should see the funnel strings.
I agree about being to thin but I think you need to beat by hand. It's a lot like pancake batter & only to beat by hand. I would eat it no matter what shape it was in🤪😛😝😃
Paula, you are the pro, but, the batter needs to be thicker to keep the shape of each line circle-go-round. I bought a package mix that came with a funnel pourer, like yours, but plastic, and the batter mixed up a lot thicker for a slower control of batter to shape when pouring, and it worked for me, first time making them! But, I like your recommending Peanut oil to cook in. Thanks, and I love watching your channel, because you are such a fine cook, and fun sense of humor! p.s.: And you love butter as much as me, lol!🧈”Life is better with butter”!lol!
I wish I was with y'all -- so much fun! I wonder if it would turn out ok with just using pancake batter? Funnel cakes and fried dough can't be beat. The real reason people go to carnivals is to eat the goodies that we don't make at home. Love to all and God bless.
Hey Paula Ive been watching your shows for years and I enjoy it very much. I tried making cake donuts from scratch but they didn't turn out right. I was wondering if you could do a video on home made cake donuts and how to fry them. Thanks
😂 LOL.. Micheal, you are so right 🤣 Kinda on the same subject Mrs. Paula, I have noticed in the last couple weeks, especially when start a recipe with flour in your bowl, you don’t always tell us how much flour you have🤷♀️ If you fail to mention an amount of something, it’s almost always the first ingredient you start with. I love you and Micheal to the moon and back. I just can’t imagine either one of you without the other. I adore YOUR RECIPES and send my BEST WISHES to a wonderful couple 🌷
Up Here fried dough is when you have bread dough you pinch some off spread it out like a pizza before toppings than place in the oil and fry it U add the same toppings for both
The PA. Dutch do a bit thicker and dont make it so solid, it is drizzled further apart the make it look like a pile of rope with holes all in it, but Im sure it tastes the same. Love ya girl
I think ur batter is too thin according to other recipes for funnel cakes! It does work out ,if it’s thicker , to put it in a plastic bag if u don’t have a funnel. ❤️

powdered sugar 4 sure!

Yes!! I'm surprised Paula didn't catch that. A really thin batter in oil doesn't make any sense.
Thanks Kelli, I'm going to try your suggestion!
Exactly, that looks like a mess!
I just this video, Michael is so cute. I enjoy seeing him in the kitchen with you so much. Yall make a cute couple. I was sitting here laughing out loud watching him getting more of the funnel cake to eat. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe.

Wow I hope some day you get that recipe I'm sure other people will be interested in it to, maybe a museum or something, good luck 👍🙏
I'm glad she is on YT as well. Nor sure what YT is pulling...this new format sucks. They just changed things...didn't ask anyone...idiots.

Fill up a plastic ketchup/mustard container with the batter. Squeeze the bottle to dispense. Works like a charm and gives grear control.

3/4 cup milk whole
2 eggs large
2 Tbsp of white granulated sugar

Hey everyone! Eddie asked if funnel cake and fried dough were the same. Up here in New York state it is not even close. Our fried dough is actually bread dough that's fried.

Could it help to start in the middle? Might it then build on itself? Just a thought. I've never made them.
Paula if you made a funnel cake mix I would certainly buy it & add it to my pantry of Paula Deen's items! My son loves a funnel cake!
If I remember right the batter was thicker
I use a cake mix of what ever flavor I want and just a little extra milk ...... They come out Pretty good !

Where I grew up, we did “fried dough” and you either had marinara or powdered sugar as your topping choices.
You can also use a spoon and just drizzle the batter over the oil.
