What a perfect song. The lyrics and meaning remind me a bit of “On the Radio”: “This is how it works: you’re young until you’re not. You love until you don’t. You try until you can’t. You laugh until you cry. You cry until you laugh. And everyone must breathe until their dying breath,” is a very similar sentiment to, “You’re around ‘til you’re not around, and that’s all you need to know.” Girl tells it like it is with such poignancy. I absolutely love her music
Exactly the same. I'm 20 y/o too and with the current issues most of the time feel like I won't have time to grow old... that lyrics are eerily calming for me
I always feel like regina spektor makes music for musicians. what I mean by that is her music is appealing to musicians because of the constantly mesmerizing and amazing composition of the instrumentals and vocals.
Yeah, I agree, some of her songs have such complex, rich piano backgrounds that it sounds like the opening of a beautiful sonata or something. She loves to explore with new rhythms and unexpected twists. Her classical training definitely adds so much to her music.
I disagree. I'm not a musician, but her songs give me intense emotions that no other form of art can. Her music is good for the soul, and is for everyone.
"All the lies on your resume Have become the truth by now And the things that you never did Have become your youth, somehow You know everything by now" This is so beautifully put and true... You're probably the most underrated lyricist of you day Regina. I've loved every song on this new album so far.
I didn't quite "get" this song when it first came out. My mother died a few weeks after this album was released. As I was standing in line at the funeral home, with old friends and teachers giving me their sympathies, this song was stuck in my head and made so much sense.
As so few do fully enjoy their youth, the phrase is a threat. Sooner than later, many will look back wondering where all that time went and why it was so misspent. So, I say with a sardonic smile, "Enjoy your youth."
without a doubt my favourite song from the new album so far. the lyrics, the melody, the instrumentation, it's all just wonderful. regina, you are simply incredible.
You MUST! I saw her first after Begin To Hope came out in a hole in the wall in Nashville. Then again, after she got big, at The Ryman. She's incredible live. I told her she was going to be a huge, and she said, "I am?". :) I have my picture with her and everything!! This album is going to be another good one.
This song has made me realize that I would give anything at all to have Regina write music for a musical. I really honestly feel like her style would fit in musical theatre.
And all the days they were longer And the drinks they were stronger The words we sang wrong But the songs were remembered And time just passed About the best five lines ever written.
Lyrical genius. Regina, you're one of the most talented people on Earth. This song sounds so happy but the lyrics are actually so sad. I'm ecstatic to see you on October 15th. Please play this live! Love, your longtime fan.
Loved your old songs...still love you.. Will continue loving you..Samson is still the best track for me. Your voice melts in my heart faster than anything. You'll always be my queen !!
I love you so much and always have. There is no one out there that can begin to touch your unique talent. I always know your voice when I hear it. Keep them coming! We love you Regina!
I absolutely love this song. I think that the melody gives an impression of sincere nostalgia or of memories deeply felt and this mood that she conjures up is perfect for the words. I think that the lyrics are about the wisdom that comes with age. Regina is contrasting foolish youth with the wisdom of older people. I remembered you older and taller but you're younger and smaller so who's gonna call her and say that you're back again? - In this stanza, the narrator is describing a person (I’ll assume he is a man) who was giant in the narrator’s memory, However now that the narrator sees him again, the narrator has grown enough to see that this man is more human than the narrator remembers. I suspect that this man was a “bad boy” and the woman who loved him still loves him and still feels the pain that he caused.I absolutely love this song. I think that the melody gives an impression of sincere nostalgia or of memories deeply felt and this mood that she conjures up are perfect for the words. And all the lies, they were wiser And wise were the lies And the lies were on fire And the fires were put out just to be lit again - When the man was young, he told lots of lies, but the lies actually turned out to be good in the end. You're alone 'til you're not alone And that's all you need to know Every time you decide to stay Then the world will make you go And that's all you need to know - I think that this stanza describes how the man was lonely because he needed to move frequently. This may have been is job or it may have been that he had a restless personality. In either case, he chose to leave and this hurt the woman who loved him. All the debts, they got settled And the settlers got cattle But the cattle was rattled by the snakes That were guarding the garden gates - I had said before that this may be nonsense, but now I am changing my mind. I think that this is about all of the debts being fixed. The man created debts (sins) and now he has paid them back. And you retired just in time You were about to be fired For being so tired from hiring the ones Who will take your place - Here we see that the man has aged. He is no longer the young and brash bad boy. He is now the wise old man that the young people think of as old fashioned. All the lies on your resume Have become the truth by now And the things that you never did Have become your youth, somehow You know everything by now - This is the most important stanza. When the man was young, he lied and pretended to be things he wasn’t; he was young and foolish. However, he faked it till he made it. As he grew wiser, he grew large enough to actually be able to at last do the things that had been lies. Enjoy your youth, Sounds like a threat - This is the line about old people looking at young people and calling them foolish. I’ll bet that Regina hears all the time from people, “enjoy your youth”. The music industry is for young and beautiful people. Singers, and especially women, are at their height in their twenties. After thirty, singers, and especially women find that their fans start to disappear and their records no longer sell as well. I am sure that Regina values the wisdom of age, but she also gets angry at the old and bitter people who are jealous of her. A few singers has the talent to remain stars into their old age and perhaps Regina will be one of those. I remembered you older and taller But you're younger and smaller So who's gonna call her and say That you're here at last? - The narrator see the man as smaller than the narrator remembered. In one way this makes sense since the man is no longer a bad boy; he no longer is puffed up with lies and bragging. However, this is ironic because he has grown in wisdom and is in reality much more effective as a person. His resume is no longer filled with lies, but truth. However, the narrator is also old and wiser and the narrator now sees the fabulous bad boy as human. The line, “whose gonna call her and say that you’re here at last” is just beautiful. The man is now wise enough to truly love the woman that he hurt all of those years ago.
It's wonderful, but I think it's going to take another dozen listens to understand a lot of the meaning behind it. Good thing I don't have anything better to do today!

I always feel like regina spektor makes music for musicians. what I mean by that is her music is appealing to musicians because of the constantly mesmerizing and amazing composition of the instrumentals and vocals.
yes regina is a great singer-songwriter
I get it, the piano tone was totally Gershwin, even the strings.

All songs are great. No exceptions.
personal preference yo. I loved the others though, don't get me wrong!
small bill$ is hard to compete with.
Totally agree, the other ones doesn't sound like true regina' music, not bad either just... random
As so few do fully enjoy their youth, the phrase is a threat. Sooner than later, many will look back wondering where all that time went and why it was so misspent.
So, I say with a sardonic smile, "Enjoy your youth."
