Some part of inspiration for this was a friend of Regina, who is physicist, who said that physicists turn to philosophy when they reach an end (or a dead end). (Not verbatim). This I believe is found in the line "Each time a theory proves, the mystery just moves". Regina said this in an interview and I just wanted to share.
Philosophy was the first "Science", that ever existed, so to some degree it just makes sense that everything returns to it. Really beautiful song, by the way.
I was like what is this person saying it's just a cute you will learn, but then the music goes all dark and her voice goes yknow and I'm like :0, dang was it lovely tho
No joke. I was feeling it was like a loving mother wishing all her best for her child, but eventually we leave the protective aura of our mothers love and the world outside can have a tendency to beat the shit out of you.
It reminded me of Rachmaninov and other composers of his school/era. It’s not the exact music, obviously, but… well, just listen to it. Lol th-cam.com/video/YOx710drHnw/w-d-xo.html
This song sums up Regina's music so well. It's dreamy, sweet, curious and creative, but also so focused on the musing of time, love, fear and death. The orchestration is breathtaking, her voice so free... it's just so moving it brings me to tears
"My mind is full of melodies/They search for homes inside of me" harkens back to Fidelity for me. I love those lyrical threads and ideas that seem to tie together and recur throughout her career, it brings me joy and nostalgia as a longtime fan.
I think those lines are one of the few times Regina's actual personality goes into the piece, otherwise she never does it from her perspective it seems, it's always another character being released. Most of her songs have either a line that's just her as she realizes one or a vocal moment that's just her playing and expanding her freedom in song.
This is one of her best songs maybe. This one and loveology make me weep, they both describe life and being a human in a way I've never experienced through other art.
Woah, I saw her on Broadway almost exactly 3 years ago to the day (June 20, 2019) and she actually performed this song at the show! I know that it's not uncommon for artists to perform unreleased songs at their concerts, but I thought it was a great performance. I've thought about the song a couple times since then, it's cool to see it released.
Same here! (Not sure if I was there that day or a different day.) I remember her saying it was a new song she'd just written, and the performance was powerful and moving. I've been waiting since then to be able to hear it again, and so happy to finally have it on an album. Excited to see her again next month.
My mom listening from afar... sounds like a fairytale... and me... yes mom!!! that's almost the title of the song... love it... and she liked too!!!! Great song!!!!
Such a fabulous, ruminative, thoughtful and wonderfully long song. "The pages may have burned, but words can just return" hearkens back to Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita", a provocative philosophical romp that has a sci-fi edge to it. I love the orchestral elements and the tone shifts and changes. It's a mix of riding in an old Soyuz capsule, ending up in on the holodeck of the Enterprise for a jazz and tapdance number, and then somehow finding yourself standing on an oceanside pier asking someone where you are, and they say, "well, Yalta..." And you have to get money from Rimsky to get back to the Variety Theater...
Beautiful, the instrumental was captivating. She actually sounds a bit like Cat Stevens here -- like she's really living here with you in the moment, like she's just sitting and smiling that genuine smile of another fellow peer.
Listening to this in the car last night, I was getting tailgated on the highway by someone with their brights on (which always freaks me out). After they continued to tailgate me around an exit to a different highway and multiple lane changes, I shouted "Stop following me!" and in that exact moment the "You will learn" section kicked in, and I was like, "What the hell Regina? How did you know?"
@@ぼじん-o5r I have absolutely no idea. I assumed it wasn't intentional and they were just too impatient to leave space between our cars, but then the multiple lane changes really freaked me out. Like if you're that impatient just speed ahead of me please. Why do you even want to be behind me?
I fell out of touch with RS's music after Far, still listen to everything up to then an awful lot and love playing along to it. My grandad, who I introduced to her music (and has impeccable taste in music, no matter how 'modern'), told me she had a cracking tune out years ago that I never followed up on, and hearing this I know I've been remiss! Getting Joe Hisaishi vibes in parts, as well as that wonderful 'dangerous, evil' vibe that she occasionally springs on you (6:55). It reminded me of Galadriel's ring temptation scene in LOTR: "Instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!" Not gonna lie, I would quickly bend the knee if Regina (heh, funny coincidence in name) gained absolute power through some dark magic. Paycheck's coming through soon, I guess I'll be eating beans and rice for the month after spending the rest on albums to catch up on ;/
Real quick The orchestral drums bouncing and the dynamics the flutes and harps and those jazzy flapper breaks and THAT DISSONANT PART caught me so off guard 🤘🏽🤘🏽LOVED
You must’ve taken so much time and meticulous mastery to compose very experimental and remarkable ❤ your lyrics and voice are on are soothing my last braincell Very triumphant and sonically transcendental very fantastical Feels like you’re reading me a bedtime story
This is literally an awful song 😂. Almost embarrassing with how… discordant and awful it is. Typically I like her songs but this sounds like the ravings of a madwoman. Also sounds positively demonic at the conclusion wtf….

Oh how interesting! Thanks for sharing!
I heard the podcast, i agree :) this is the heart and soul of the album
what interview was that from?
Philosophy was the first "Science", that ever existed, so to some degree it just makes sense that everything returns to it. Really beautiful song, by the way.
Hmmmmm
Good orchestral arrangement and of course song is brilliant. Bravo Regi
this was so whimsical then it took a dark turn with 'you will learn' lol. i love it
I was like what is this person saying it's just a cute you will learn, but then the music goes all dark and her voice goes yknow and I'm like :0, dang was it lovely tho
Which makes the song the more appealing, pure genius
I guess it's a fairytale after all… lol

"Time moves slower round your feet" followed by a slow, little tap-dance interlude is genius.
Wait, THERE'S A TAP DANCE INTERLUDE??? I need to listne more closely haha
@@jiribb9300 Yeah, the tappy noises starting @ 3:42 are actually from a tap dancer!
@@cynopt Ooo thanks for the timestamp^^
This song in of itself feels like a fairytale all on its own. Also can I just say the orchestration on this album is absolutely outstanding.
Jaw dropped to the fucking ground. Absolute masterpiece.

And with every new album, every new song, Regina proves us, once again, that she can be one of the most amazing artists out there.
What a gift of a 9 minute song
Doesn't feel that long, does it?

Yeah, some similar lyrics in Consequence Of Sound
@@tortis6342 Consequence of Sound is my all time favorite! Though its certainly not as peaceful and melodic sounding ( ;

Each time a theory proves, the mystery just moves
Oh Regina, how you've grown! Pupation is complete.
I think this is the darkest Regina has ever gone sonically with her music and I absolutely love it. This album was more than worth the wait
The best song of Regina's entire career!!!! A masterpice!!!!!
A truly underrated artist. This album and all the songs need soo many more views!

This reminds me of The Visit from Regina's previous album, Remember Us to Life 💜
Well, up until it became dark and threatening
This song elevates the entire album.

I think this is my favourite song in Regina's new album. I cannot get that tap dancing music part out of my head. So so good.
Okay, I figured out you're an angel- you got wings I bet!! Beautiful work mate, Australia wants you
This goes places. It’s beautiful. I crave an instrumental version because it tells a story all its own without the vocals.
Not sure I've mentioned lately how much I love you and your music.
9 minute masterpiece
"i know there's no such thing as mine" 🥺
you're one person I always wanted to meet I guess I'll just have to dream. God bless your heart Regina and keep you safe..
I know there's no such thing as turning back 💔
Saw the show last eve in milwaukee this song’s performance improved from chicago became this show’s zenith. Presages her next worthy evolution🐋🐬
What an epic masterpiece. Sent chills through my spine - especially beginning at 5:25
I'm writing a book and I was waiting for this song. I can submit it now thank you regina spektor for your creative genius and all you do.
oooo I'm ready for the hard core folk revival.
Check out Jill Sobule. She's more than just her medium hits I Kissed a Girl and Supermodel.
Damn, what a song. Thank you Regina.
Dieses Lied ist ein großes Kunstwerk 🌹

This might be her best song
Just noticed your new album's out. Wonderful songs and production details. Made my day. :-) Thank you!
