I think Elena has texture and...character in her voice. I know her voice isn't what you would expect, but I think the depth her voice gives to the character is great. It makes me forget I am watching a musical and get into the story. And of course, Phillip Quast is perfect.
miss rogers talent is not capured on a recording, i saw her in london and she was outstanding, i bought the cast recording and was dissapointed, just wait till u se her on stage, i have never seen anyone with such stage pressance, shes outstanding!!!!!! viva elena xxx
Philip Quast has done a children's show in Australia. He dresses very casual. This is a man who knows how to wear a pair of jeans. On many occasion I'd be flicking and get stuck on playschool with Noni, or Bettina, and Ted and Jemima and Philip Quast's legs. Elena is simply divine. There's a new goddess on the block.
thank you so much for posting this clip. i was at the opening night, i can understad the comments made about miss roger, i am not here to tell people they are wrong. On stage she was perfection, i have never seen a person with so much presance on a stage, she was mesmorising as Eva. but i understand peoples comments when i bought the sound track i was dissapointed. but live on stage one word desribes Elena Roger. AMAZING!
i understand peoples dislike of this work, but reading many comments on here, am so happy to see that they enjoyed the music etc, many people would react in the same way in the uk if a musical was written about HRH the queen which painted her as a social climbing whore, it is good to see that so much more has been written and studied about eva peron since the 70's. However i fell she will never be fully understood. xxxxx love to you all, enjoy the production xx
I saw miss roger and she was incredible. One person who recordings doesn't capture how amazing she is x matt rawle should have gone to Broadway with her. Ricky Martin was dreadful Philip Quest was just a wonderful giant talent xx
I saw her on broadway last week and she seemed a little rough for this song then as well, but other then this song she sounded great and was a phenomenal actress. I mean they can't all belt like Patti.
I think Philip Quast is the only one who could do justice to the General. Peron was a tall, imposing figure with charisma and powerful voice. It's such a pity the lirics of the musical are soooo biased. Also, it's such a shame that I can't find a professional recording if this show.
Actually, Che was originally conceived as Che Guevara in the original concept album, and in the original productions in London and Broadway. In fact, the synopsis states: "There is no evidence whatsoever that Che Guevara ever met Eva Peron or became in any way involved with her, but the character Che in EVITA is based upon this legendary revolutionary." It was the movie that first used him as an everyman and not Che Guevara, and that's what this revival did, too.
Furthermore, Che did live at the same time as Evita. He was an Argentine himself and was 17 when Peron came to power and 24 when Eva died. He came from a privileged upbringing so his family were not favorable to Peronism. He had an epiphany when he went on his motorcycle trip throughout Latin America the year of Eva's death. Also, many Argentineans called Eva a whore and then some. Even today, the Argentineans are split. The whole of Argentina did not like her.
eh...shes a good singer, but i agree with others. I'm used to a more powerful voice behind the role. I've heard they want to use her for the broadway revival, though i hope they will reconsider. I'd much rather see someone like Karen Olivo or stephanie j block take on the role
That said, the staging in this revival is so uninspired. All they're doing for the most part is walking/running around the stage. In the original, the workers were waving placards and torches, and banners came down fro the rafters. It was electrifying.
Yikes! No wonder I have not been able to listen to the London Revival Cast Album in its entirety! This staging lacks total edge, impact, and point of view. It is pretty bad. And the Eva arrangements for this number, in this version, are horrible. Head voice is annoying and not powerful in the context of the character and the song, at this particular moment in the show. Aghrrr! To think that I have to sit through this on Broadway. I hope they improved it!
that doesn't matter that they didn't live in the same time or place or he didn't have any views about her in real life. read his lyrics, he's obviously hostile toward Evita. this is a musical based off evita's life, it's not completely accurate

Finally an acurate evita. I'd have absolutely loved to have seen this

I adore this musical. AND i adore Phillip Quast. Thanks sooo very much for sharing this.

what an absolutely incredible pairing funny thing though I cant help thinking back to les mis each time I see and hear quast wow

I saw her in London and she was absolutely magnificent.
Elena Roger is amazing, and she does sound better now. :) I saw her last week.

Matt Rawle! =D
That's how it's done!!! Patti was great, but she wasn't the only one born for the role.
I LOVE Patti to death, but idk Elena just has the Latin Fire lol
also is it just me or does matt rawle sound ridiculously like quast in this
do you have the full elena rodgers show up for trade????
everyone is getting all pissed about elena roger (who is great btw) but no one is acknowledging the real enemy: the staging
It really says something when Peron and Che outshine Eva vocally...
DAMN YOU QUAST! Why must you be good at everything? You should have attempted a Argentina like Elena
I saw her on broadway last week and she seemed a little rough for this song then as well, but other then this song she sounded great and was a phenomenal actress. I mean they can't all belt like Patti.
I was excited for this to be coming back to broadway, but now that i hear this.... :(
i love elena's accent!

Even after what, four years, I cannot get used to an Argentinian Eva.
Oh, irony.
@ComedianDivo1 i've heard other recordings and she sounds phenomenal. maybe its just this day. idk :/
I just love Patti LuPone to bits in this role! I'm not keen on Elaine Paige or Elena Roger to be honest..
lol what is with all the dislikes? it really isn't bad i mean at all

@MrMusicman25 I loved Gunton's R's!

Javert, dictator of Argentina
Yes Javert in the original production of Les Miserables.

@ComedianDivo1 she is fine she doesn't sing as well but she will win a tony
@MrMusicman25 Some people genetically cannot. Such as myself lol
This better not be how she sounds like now on BROADWAY.......
This woman just didn't have the power in upper range to make the role work. She's not really singing anymore after C
I am annoyed that Quast doesnt roll his R's. Bob Gunton mastered that!

I just don't love Rogers voice...
I watched this for Philip Quast, but my OMG Elena is awful.
This is a mess.
This is the worst performance ever.
Please stop.
you have to realize this is Che's view of Evita
that doesn't matter that they didn't live in the same time or place or he didn't have any views about her in real life. read his lyrics, he's obviously hostile toward Evita. this is a musical based off evita's life, it's not completely accurate
