Earthen Plaster Repair and Refinish | Part 1

  • One of the great things about natural buildings is that they are recyclable. The earthen plaster in Wisteria Lodge has been around for nearly 10 years and it's gotten a lot of wear and tear, so this season before a new tenant moved in I took some time to repair it and finish it with a natural clay alis paint. Earthen plaster is all organic and so malleable that you can chip it off, add some water, and it comes back to life for reuse in the same repair project. This little project transformed the house from kind of a junky looking quaint tiny house inside, to a beautiful, warm, and inspiring little space.

Here are the other parts: Not sure why TH-cam doesn't play them in order

Great video insight to the process, thank you for sharing. Im curious about your burnisher tool, what is it?
Using the cat tail fluff makes me wonder what useful earth plaster information we have lost since moving to modern materials. Im sure recipes were very regional using ingredients indigenous to that area (like cactus or dung, etc).

The burnisher I was using is EPDM, a plastic material people use for earthen roof waterproofing. It's also known as pond liner. You can use the lid from a yogurt container with the rim cut off, but that plastic tends to be thinner and less flexible. I like the EPDM because it it is more flexible and softer.
I'm sure that there is a large variation in materials used in earthen plaster depending on geography. I could have put manure in this plaster too, but I didn't. It would have helped make it less clay heavy and prone to cracking. The manure does have fine fiber in it. For the fiber you could use just about any dried plant material, but for the finish coat you want something finer usually.

About how long did it take for you to do this? And how long does the clay layer have to dry before putting on the plaster? And how long does that have to dry?

The undercoats should dry completely before putting another layer on top. How long it takes depends on the temperature, humidity, air movement and thickness of the layer. Higher temps and more air movement will dry it faster, more humidity and thicker plaster will slow drying. It might take a couple to a few days per layer.

Hi Dan, I'm planning to attend the permaculture class coming up soon. I hope you will be teaching a class so I can chat with you for a brief time. I hope you find Bango. I have soon questions om how to do the base on an old paster wall I have to refinish. Hoping all is well.

Hey that's great to hear Mary. I don't have plans to teach any of the class. I think Bill Wilson is teaching it still. I'd be happy to answer your questions about plaster. Banjo was actually around, but Virgil had just taken her spot.

I just know if I ask anyone to fix it, they are going to say they need to take all the plaster down and put up drywall and I just don't want to do that. I will take a picture of the hole and the sagging paint.

That's something TH-cam can control. I can't put Turkish subtitles on my videos. Sorry.
