Building with the Earth

  • At Cottage Grove, Oregon, a group of remarkable people have come together to create buildings out of earth that teach us how to live more simply and closer to the earth.
    We are going to meet:
Michael G. Smith, who trained as a civil engineer, but turned, instead, to this more ecologically sane form of building
Ianto Evans, a Welsh landscape architect, who adapted traditional European earth building, or cob, so we could stop using our houses to hide from nature
and Linda Smiley, a therapist with a special interest in sculpting sacred spaces.
And we will visit two beautiful cob buildings created at a fraction of the cost of conventional housing and see people from all walks of life, with no prior experience, mixing cob and building with it. The Cob Cottage Company is now in Coquille, Oregon. Their website is www.cobcottage....

When I was a child (I'm 38 now) I was helping my grandparents to do all this and much more. Back then, I had no idea how important it is, the way they live. Now, everything is vanished, after my grandpa passed away last year. They lived simple, the entire life. My grandpa worked all the time, with horses.

When you have very few people that understand the natural architecture, it's beauty, but that it does involve some hard work. It becomes a one man show very quickly around here.

I love cob. I love building with it. My home is made of it. I wish more people around here would become interrested in it. Maybe they are just too lazy. I thought of maybe speaking at a community meeting about it after the fire across the lake last year destroyed 250 'stick-built' houses.
Anyway, I'm 56 and I guess if I have to do it all myself, I will.

Very very nice information within the context of the subject matter with examples of each of your own homes as proof. I also went away from corporate America, down sized to a tiny house off the grid. Found a new freedom and existence, while understanding that infinite consumption in a finite world isn't going to turn out well for a major part of civilization. Common sense really. Keep up the good work and awareness. I admire your dedication to this movement.

We're moving to Arizona in Cochise County and we're planning a cob house build but need building help as my husband is physically disabled but can help some. He has debilitating arthritis both shoulders and back. Is there help in that area for cob building? Earth bag and straw bales is what we want to do.

always curious about the excavating process - getting to the subsoil - are there trenches all around the property?

Trenches will break your ankles. Digging out a pond is better.

I was just at Cobville for a week+, and soil conditions vary from spot to spot. You can remove the several inches of topsoil to reach subsoil and dig that out in a larger area, and sometimes the clay soil is at the surface too due to rain washing away topsoil. Cobville has trenches around the property to help drain excess water, as it was very swampy when first established. Ianto dug all the trenches and put covers over them where people walk, and now they have awesome gardens surrounded by cob buildings and walls to keep the very tame deer away from the food.

me too; variations.. I live in Canada and having a shallow footing is unheard of.. the footing needs to be below 4 ft frost line..(requires a bit more stability than the USA.. i want to be able to create an earthen floor throughout the home, with a small 8x8x3ft high crawl space for utilities and waterline access to the 3 spots requiring water.. ie: kitchen, bathroom, and the laundry room thay has the access hole to crawlspace....
theres alot of videos online on foundations, slab, rubble pile, w/ crawlspace, w/basement.... hope ypu can find something to suit your need

Rain forest deforestation is more about agriculture than house building.
I don't know anyone here in TN that builds a house with anything other than pine grown here in the US.

All they need is bells ribbons and bits of stick to hit each other with...I think they'll have a hard time stopping people in certain parts of England from reproducing that bit of the video I won't be able to watch this without laughing now...anyway how would you go about stopping people from reproducing what is essentially one of the oldest ways of building?

When it all ends after "x" no of years and the generation which would be present at that time... To them.. this video will be a proof that their ancestors did think of saving the earth (failed ultimately).
They will understand that at least some people were there who gave a shit about mother Earth.

I noticed that none of you knows that you add horse shit for the short fibers. This is tradition. Dont be yucky about it. That is a very clean vegan animal.
