  • It’s time for the second part in looking at Channel 4’s Box Network - took a while to do due to the school holidays but here it is. This week we’re looking at the Magic, Smash Hits, Box Hits, 4 music and Kerrang brands including some of their radio station roots.
    Channel 4 announced in 2024 that they would be getting rid of the music network by the end of the year. I go through some ideas on how Channel 4 could slimline their music channels and a few of my daft ideas.
    This episode also contains some history about radio station brands, which include viking radio in Hull, Radio Aire in Leeds, Key 103/ piccadilly radio in Manchester, and The Pulse aka pennine radio in Bradford West yorkshire.

    Bauer and Global are definitely the Granada and Carlton of the radio world. One of theese days they'll merge and we'll have a choice of two stations...

    That tangent on quality and local TV/radio was OUTSTANDING. Would love to see that explored further.

      I could talk radio like this FOREVER :P I did speak to someone a bit ago who was thinking about doing something similar to Television affair but radio. I will see if it happens and if it doesn't I might just do some radio ones. I know there's a masive following for TV ads on here, but you never hear old radio adverts. I'd love to find a radio adverts archive somewhere some day

      Yeah I think it would inject some life into a format that arguably channel 4 have failed to innovate with!

    Mentioning The Box and Jack FM in the same video but not mentioning Jack 2 with the slogan Playing What You Want. Jack 2 was a station in DAB in Surrey and Hampshire that had an app where you could vote songs up and down the playlist and was free to do so, but you had to use an account to prevent spam. I used to listen to it all the time and used the app a few times which worked rather well.

    I wouldn't mind a channel based around Atlantic 252! Trouble is, who owns that brand? RTE? CLT? It was a collaboration between Ireland and Luxembourg!
    ALso, I have happy memories of the Lifestyle Satellite Jukebox! Maybe having the Box channels be a spiritual successor to that would be fantastic! Though I doubt we'd see a return of Twinkle...

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well I guess you could use the word Atlantic, and if you styled the feel to be like it or an evolution from it, it would be fine for it. But yeah I think it was eventually sold to RTE so if you wanted the logo and the whole 252 bit it would have to be them. A station of the stars where you request music videos. Atlantic was based on chart music though where I get the feeling that LSJB got their hands on whatever they could and had to build from there.

    Your comments on local radio are spot on. The beeb have cut so much local content and moved it to "regional" in a lot of cases, Bauer/Global have bought all the indies from the 80's and, if you're very lucky, you might get a local brekkie show with the rest of the content being the same personality driven slop that gets broadcast nationwide.
    It's so sad. They've accelerated the decline.

    Great stuff.
    I just got back from Krakow and whilst I was there saw CANAL+ ads and it reminded me of your channel. I’ve got the photos and everything. Couldn’t believe it.

    At 7:49 the song in the ident is you’ve lost your way by Idlewild, when they were a proto punk band. I loved idlewild and still do, never knew they were on a Kerrang ident, when this ident came out Idlewild were in their indie rock phase and ironically wouldn’t have been played on Kerrang by then…

    a bit of the magic you got wrong in the north east, the station was never radio tees as that was re-named TFM96.60 and TFM2, TFM2 became magic 1170am and was never based in middlesbrough it was thornaby near the rail station and 10mins walk from stockton high street, and now TFM has merged with metro FM in newcastle

      @@jonkasonic And most of it will be the same music as well haha. We do sometimes listen to Absolute Classic Rock as well, although that depresses me sometimes when they play early 2000's tracks as classic rock, makes me feel old

    I think the "4Kids" name has already been taken by the American company that dubbed Pokemon and other Anime into English. Channel 4 will have to think of another name for their kids block if that's what they want to make.

    Sorry to be a killjoy regarding your The Box revival idea but I just don’t think linear TV can compete on interactivity. If music channels have a future I see it in making programming *about music*, instead of replicating the radio formula with the addition of music videos. There’s a big market out there of podcasts and youtube channels talking about how music gets made and I think there’s a place for that on TV.

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey its all good and I see your point. To be honest In order for Radio to survive and evolve, that needs to change too. The thing bauer is doing is having celebs or established talent. They are trying to sell it for the personalities/big names. I think radio will need to bring you something you don't get from other places. Being a portable media helps but it does mean people are starting to think creatively about radio again, especially community stations that are more professional. Radio will probably go towards sounding like a live podcast with music to split it up.
      I think that it's easy to say linear doesn't need to exist because of on demand media, but I do think at some point people will get fed up of having to pick everything. I think on demand is great for if you miss something or if you want to binge a series. Whether ai will be able to replicate that by creating a video playlist but it's a matter of having to switch apps to make a linear playlist but I think that if it's sold correctly, people will buy it. Probably would cost less on the consumer too.
      Not having to switch apps, not having to pick, more time for scrolling for cat videos. I just feel like everyone's jumped on the ondemand band wagon and not practically thought about it. Remember nokias where everyone coukd change their case, ring tones, add a picture. How many of those people have a samsung now and use the same ring tones and alarms as the next person with the standard customisation. But again that's my opinion and people are always mega welcome to share theirs and join the conversation 👍

    Hey! I'm gonna be one of these annoying people who say "first".
    Been waiting for ages for this, and I'm sure this will wow me! I guess I wouldn't be too interested in the output of Smash Hits or Magic, as I'm a bit of a rockhead, as you already know. At least there's something for everyone! Those who like dance music, there's Kiss, then the pop fans would have 4Music, then the easy listening fans, Magic, and then the rockheads/metalheads would have Kerrang!
    If Global and Bauer inevitably merge, given the right regulations. The radio stations will pretty much be monopolised, on my DAB radio, it lists Gem as a station, obviously I can't get it because I don't live in Nottingham, I'm all the way in Wales. I'm sure that might end up being either a Greatest Hits station or Hits Radio thing. Much like Radio City, Signal 1, Key 103 and Free Radio. All of those I can pick up pretty decently from North Wales, more so Key and Radio City.
    (As of the time of writing this: Radio City has now had its name changed to "Hits Radio Liverpool" effectively putting an end to the Radio City brand after nearly 50 years).

      I have to pick? I don't have the space in my head for that sometimes. Getting people to do it is more organic. I guess it's like the media version of organic milk. Organic media :P
