  • The method I am using to bend poles for a hoop house. I am currently building 60 ft of hoop houses and I have found this works best for me.

    What to Expect on our Channel:
    Tiny Hilltop is the digital life-form of Nate and Evan's journey toward food self-sufficiency. Videos will include organic gardening, greenhouse gardening, and starting an orchard using permaculture concepts when possible. We hope that our videos can bring the peace and tranquility we feel when growing food amongst the trees. We would be honored if you chose to follow along on our journey!
    Tiny Hilltop Background:
    Nate has been dealing with chronic health issues for over a decade. The worst of it starting in 2011, taking me from 200lbs to 150lbs in a few months. He was mostly bedridden, requiring a wheelchair to leave the house for nearly three years. Liver and immune issues caused him to develop a sensitivity to chemicals. That started his journey towards living remotely, designing a non-toxic tiny house, growing his own food, and attempting to be as self sustainable as possible. Starting in 2020, Evan, will be doing most of the heavy lifting but Nate will still be involved with planning and production of videos.
    Thanks For Watching!

    Your tip about measuring both ends 9 inches and bending both directions makes for more uniform bends. Many thanks!

    I'm a bit late to this type of project. . . however, your video is an excellent guide as I too plan on making a "hoop house" 24 feet long and 10 feet wide to house my backyard built wooden boat. Thank you for an easy to follow instructive video! Happy new year 2022!

    Not sure I would have thought about turning it around. I probably add an extender and ruin the end of the pipe for the first couple. Thanks for the tip!

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extender still works. I just found this way to be a little easier for me.

    Seems like to me you could build your own bending jigs using plywood in any radius that you need. Just stack it with a channel in the middle to bend the pipe in.

    I am making a series of raised bed gardens for my wife. I have never done this before, and she says we have some terrible vegetable eating bugs here in Central Texas, so she wants row covers. I watched your video on bending pipe, but I'm using smaller 1/2" metal conduit, 10 foot lengths, and I bought a regular electricians' conduit bender. I was able to make 4' hoops by doing 9 bends of 20 degrees each (22.5 deg marked on the bender). One at dead center, and 4 more to each side, every 9 inches. I think I can use this to do any size hoops I want with this material, using 1/2" electrical conduit and a little bit of math, rather than buying a different hoop bender for every bed size.

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I am thinking of doing something similar for my raised beds but with plastic to make mini greenhouses out of 1/2 metal conduit. If I go that route I will build my own bender. Honestly, I thought the top rail would be a lot harder to bend.

    • @ScottSlooper
      @ScottSlooper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TinyHilltop If you're using an electricians bender just remember that the "Star" is not the exact center of the bend. By trial and error I found that the center of the bend is about 1" beyond the "Star" from the pipe inlet side of the bender. It sounds nitpicky on a 10' pipe, but when the bend uses up most of the pipe, having one straight end longer than the other by 1" does cause it to noticeably tilt relative to an even-sided one.

      Same here, you explain in a nice clear way, I’m getting ready to do a hoop house, first have to finish my 14 by 14 wall panel garage for the bobcat an$. Tools, Poly house are becoming very popular due to food costs going thru the roofs, gardens are nice but I see chickens
      soon, and some turkeys maybe, easy to raise and well protein trumps. Lettuce every time, I live in Michigan, but I wanted to do apples, pears, etc, then I woke up, long term investment,,,,,I’m getting real, my poly house is more for storage of equipment, What I grow I grow in the basement, ,lol. Peace. An$ thanks , the info has made more savvy,,,,

    Hi, what material is the pipe and what size and schedule?

  • @HealthSupercharger

    are you bending 1.375 inch top fence pipe or 1 inch conduit? I have see a video where they use 3/4 inch electrical conduit for 4 ft wide hoop. For small high tunnel 6.5 ft high and 8 ft wide would you say 1 inch conduit would be fine since they use the 1.375 for large high tunnels.

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was top rail. You could probably do something similar with conduit, though.

    How much pipe are you pushing through in between bends? Does it matter? I am having trouble keeping an even bend, but maybe I need to push less pipe through the end in between bends? help please!

    Looking good brother... what is your material cost so far and are you on track of what you estimate is?.. I hope your Lemon trees are doing well.

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure on the 20 footer. I am using a lot of materials I already had. The poles are 9 dollars a piece because I hit the bulk pricing discount. The 40 footer I will have a materials list for. That will be all new material.

    Why not just put a marker link on the deck from edge to 9 inches set the pole at that mark then just mark the pole. SHM. Why keep grabbing the measuring tape TWICE when you can just mark off with a line from the edge of the wood in 9 inches. Men are so funny!
