I’m pretty sure if you’re dropping $48k on pens then you don’t need to get any better acquainted with the gods of good fortune.

    In case anyone was wondering:
    創立百周年記念 - 100 year anniversary (literally: establishment, 100 round/whole years, commemoration/celebration)
謹製 - carefully produced/reverently made (literally: reverently/humbly manufactured) fun fact, this word is a homonym with both 金星 (Venus, the planet) and 金製 (made of gold)
七福神 - the seven gods of fortune (literally: 7, fortune/luck/wealth, gods) Also on the placard.
And I'm not entirely sure what that last part says, it's written in a very old style. All I can make out is what I think is 國.
On the box - 寶, which is the traditional form of 宝. Both of them mean the same thing: treasure.
    The seven gods of luck:
ebisu - 恵比寿 (literally: blessing/grace/wise, comparison, longevity) God of commerce, merchants and workingmen
daikoku-ten - 大黒天 (literally: great, black, deity) God of wealth commerce and trade
bishamon-ten - 毘沙門天 (literally: help, sand, gate, deity) A punisher of evildoers
benzai-ten - 弁才天 - God of warriors. 弁 has a lot of different meanings, I'm going to assume that in this sense, it's being used instead of 辯 so it would literally mean: debate/discuss, genius, deity.
fuku-roku-ju - 福禄寿 (literally: luck/good fortune, happiness, longevity) God of happiness, wealth and longevity.
ju-ro-jin - 寿老人 - God of longevity (literally: longevity, elder, person)
hotei-son - 布袋尊, usually just hotei - 布袋 - God of abundance and good health (literally: cloth/fabric, pouch/sack, reverence/veneration)

The last part is 国光会 「國光會(こっこうかい)」, the group of artists drawing Namiki pens.
This 会 looks very like a 舍 to me, haven't seen any variant of 会 like this except on Namiki.

This is a definitive testament about the craftsmanship and artistry of the Japanese culture. The Goulet Pen Company is very well deserving of this honor. Their values are strong. As an artist and a calligrapher I can not describe the work in words that convey my true feelings. Thank you Brian and John for giving us this presentation. Write On!!!

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

Truth is gloves aren't needed, the urushi lacquer is so durable our fingers aren't gonna hurt it. But we talked before the video and I knew I'd be handling all the pens so I wanted to wear the gloves, less to polish off before putting them all back in the box. Shiny black gloss lacquer looks amazing but shows every fingerprint! -Brian

This is like owning a fine piece of art. I can’t imagine earning the kind of money which would allow me to buy a set like this. But if I was a Millionaire type I’d certainly do it and probably use them for important documents or contracts. Lol.
Either way. These are beautiful works of craftsmanship and fine art. Thanks for sharing these. Congrats to Pilot on the centenary/Shūnen.

Doing art work on paper or canvas laying flat is one thing, to do it on a cylinder is a whole different ball game. Fantastic lid!!! Awesome display of craftsmanship.
Congrats to the Goulet Pen Company on getting set #2 that is an honor.

I like John's final comment. I actually think it would pay a great homage to the Goulet Pen Co. The Pilot video, in how they've entrusted the company to continue the fine-writing division of their company going and to be entrusted with it's "soul", would make an awesome commemorative and poetic home for the set within the Goulet Pen Co.

For what you get I dont think the price is that bad (not that I can afford it though). I just wish Pilot did something for the everyperson. Seems that a special edition Custom 74 with a stamped "100 years" would sell gangbusters.

    • @sofijeffrey9797

Question (maby for a new video?):
How does Paper (Rhodia) go "bad"?
I used a page from a RHODIA-block while being in europe it wrote perfectly... It wasn't absorbing ink and due to this had all the shading I wanted.
I flew to the US and stayed there for a month and still had the page in the block I took it from. After flying back to europe, the paper (the same page) suddenly bled like crazy... no shading and the ink was immediately visible from the page's back.
I thought it might have been the fact that I flew but all other pages work perfectly.
This single page also lay outside of the block probably for a few weeks, does paper go bad from that?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting, haven't heard of that happening! A couple theories, but it's possible the paper absorbed some moisture from the air and changed its properties. Also (and this is much more common), but as you write, your hand lays down some oils on the page so as you move down it interacts with the ink and causes issues. - Colin

I do want to get a couple of the hundredth anniversary pens coming out next year, but this set is the ultimate work of fountain pen art. Nothing has ever tempted me this much, but there aren't enough of them, anyway. I suspect a hundred people will want a set for each set available, and even with the money, I don't think buying a set will be at all easy. I also suspect the resale value will be much, much higher than the original cost, so If anyone can justify buying this set, do so quickly.

      @@strider_1651 you lost me.
I was saying, that in Chinese and thus also in On'yomi Chinese reading of the word 四 four in Japanese is pronounced "shi", and that's the same as 死 "shi" which means death/die, so they opt to pronounce "yon" instead from Japanese native reading. Another number which is probably less consciously known is 9 which they pronounce "kyuu" like modern Chinese dialects, since the more archaic pronunciation "ku" is also homophone with 苦 which means suffering. And I guess also 7 "shichi" which is homophone with 死地 which literally means death ground, of which they'd pronounce "nana" instead, but I don't think they stress much about 7 and 9. So instead of counting 1-10 in traditional Chinese reading "ichi ni san shi go roku shichi hachi ku jyu", they'd do "ichi ni san yon roku nana hachi kyu jyu".

If only these came with the PO nib... [/asinine comment].
My favorite is the raden one - or the "more affordable" Emperor (except I prefer the smaller size). Well, I have a handful of Pilots in the $150 (via Japan vendors) price zone, and I love them. Nakaya makes my favorite model, but Pilot makes my favorite nibs.
How many pen people here, if they could afford this set, would ink up all the pens (with the limited edition inks) and use them? I totally would. :-)

I audibly gasped when I saw the raden swirl. Definitely my favorite of the bunch too. I know the artists create these with every intention of them being written with. Some of the best writing pens I've ever used. - Colin

To the (lucky) person who will buy that set:
It will take you a hundred years-in time for Pilot’s 200th anniversary-to unwrap your package with the combined packaging of the pen set and Goulet’s packaging “with a slightly ridiculous amount of care.” :)

This might be unpopular, but I'll say it. I'm kind of disappointed that Pilot opted to release an absurdly expensive centenary memorabilia and gave no thought to something more practical and affordable by the general fountain pen enthusiasts.

We have to understand that this exclusive fountain pens and pen sets are commemorating the 100th year of Pilot JAPAN, not Pilot as a globalized company. So actually these pen sets were available mostly in the Japanese market. Thats why they are so limited. I t was a surprise to me that Goulet had the ability to get one of the 25 pen set.
But I get your sentiment. I also wished they came out with a more acquirable pen for the rest of the world.

    • @stormsigma

Well, didn't they mention that there'll be some singular pens also? Of course, the "cheaper" of the two is $1,600 but that's right in line with that these handmade works of art cost now, so it wasn't surprising. That's definitely much more in the reach for those who want a piece of this type of art.
