    Rats, I was about to pull the trigger on that 100th anniversary set,but you'll only have it in medium nib...I guess I'll just have to settle for 2594 pilot metropolitans 😁

      I mean, it might sound silly, but there are hard-core collectors out there for whom $48,000 for the set would be like $480 for many of us.... But yeah, they won't buy it due to being limited to Medium only. And I can't blame them.

    • @missfl0werstar
      @missfl0werstar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really: I thought that was part of being a collector. The rarer the better, and these are "limited". :D Jokes aside, I don't think collector pens are inked very often. ;) I was excited to maybe see a special VP or something but oh well. I'm sorta broke anyway so I'll just keep writing with the amazing Pilot pens I already have. :)

      To each his own. I've just never understood collecting pens worth thousands upon thousands of dollars.... and never or very rarely inking them up, and NOT using them! That's like being able to afford a genuine Shelby Cobra, locating it.... and keeping her locked away in the garage for years or decades! Other car collectors would look at such a collector as if he were mentally insane! (And rightly so, quite frankly.) It's like marrying a Supermodel and never.... giving her a relaxing "shoulder rub." Women like a good rub every now & then.

    Brian - I don't get tired of your "rambling," ...it's why I watch. I've been watching Gq&a since episode sixty-something, skip past some of the answers, and listen mostly to your "rambling." I love pens to death, but the personal and business observations are very insightful

    Personally I really like to hear about the early days and early struggles that you guys faced. I'm 24 now and sometimes is easy to forget that nothing comes easily and that everyone faces problems but the important thing is to never give up and keep working hard to achieve our goals. You guys inspire me a lot in that sense! Keep it up!

Thanks for sharing ALL the things!

    I was really glad to see the starting over with $500 question. I saw someone ask that in a previous video and was very interested in the answer!
    I found the last question about starting over as an online retailer to be a great portrait of Goulet Pens. I found it really clarified and gave great examples of what the culture and direction of the company has been and continues to be. Thank you for all the amazing value you provide!

    Okay, I know I might be the only person on earth who does but I love both FPs and ballpoints. Mind you, I know the type of ballpoint I like and I know how to properly use one, and I have a collection of quality ballpoints I'm proud of and enjoy writing with. My handwriting looks very different but quite good with both and I like that I have an option. Please don't hate on ballpoints, they're not the enemies of FPs, just their misunderstood cousins.

    Awesome choices for rebuilding your pen collection! My two most used pens are a Lamy 2000 and TWSBI Eco. The Eco is in broad (my favorite width as it lets ink sheen). The 2000 is medium (thinnest width I’d use), and nice for quick notes and meetings where notetaking may be sporadic. I love how the hooded nib does not dry out.
    I’m surprised you did not pick your Pilot Custom 74.

    As a traditional painter, I have seen many injuries in the tendons for applying force to the fingers for a long time, I do not know how common is the syndrome of the carpal tunnel in writers, but I imagine that it can happen, using the movement of the whole arm is essential to take care of the tendons, take care of the position of the back is also very important, definitely do not use ball point pens, those things are only to torture students in schools

  • @vbence12

    I can totally back your comments on handwriting and using ballpoints. I always had terrible handwriting but since I started using fountain pens it has gotten better (still not too good but definite improvement). I have also noticed that when I write with a ballpoint I mainly use my fingers and push down really hard but when I use a fountain pen I tend to use larger wrist/shoulder based movements

    In addition to Brian's great explanation, what it is with ballpoint pens is that the point is a ball. It rolls in all directions. Writing with one is like walking on a soccer ball. That is why, in school, children (used to) learn to write with a pencil, and then went on to a fountain pen, and never used a ballpoint pen. The best writers should, on this logic, be able to use a ballpoint pen well. This is probably true. But they wouldn't want to. Except for Philip Pullman, who never uses anything else than a Montblanc ballpoint pen. For others, using a fountain pen will really improve your handwriting because you have much more control. And the line is more expressive because it is not so uniform as the line laid down by the rolling ball.

    • @NGMonocrom
      @NGMonocrom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another issue is that a few short decades ago, with the exception of the standard ballpoint offerings individually available from Parker, Waterman, and Cross.... ballpoint refills were terrible! Cross in particular would stain your fingers just like a fountain pen. Of course this was back when A.T. Cross pens were still made in America and worth buying. As far as rollerballs, Pelikan was literally the only brand who knew how to make good ones! This was before there was such a thing as Gel ink. Things are very different nowadays. Especially with Schmidt's Easy Flow ballpoint refill. And of course Pilot's G2 Gel pen. Those refills are great. Pens available at even cheap pharmacy stores. The pen bodies are crap, but thankfully the refills fit in a number of different rollerball pens. Things are just different than how they used to be.

    QOTW: Let‘s not forget “The Golden Cow” (Lamy Lady) … I do not name individual pens, but I do use nicknames referring to a certain model (“Zeppelin” for the Diplomat Aero) or colorway (e.g. “Bellhop” for the Pilot Custom/845 vermillion Urushi).

    Really!? I mean, really?! I was expecting something similar to the M90 but maybe created with titanium tempered by dragon fire and cooled in the snows on Mount Kilimanjaro; the limited number of these collected by monks as the glacier grudgingly released them as it slowly passed by the monastery. I’m sure the pen has a glow about it, similar to a halo with angelic chants radiating from this expensive yet quite possibly attainable treasure that is within the realm of possible for those who have fantasized about this potential for several years. Instead, it’s a set of several pens for $48,000!?!? Talk about anti-climatic. I’m seriously bummed....

  • @JenKeyes
    @JenKeyes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    QOTW: When I think about my pens their names relate to the color and then the brand or model. For example rather than a LAMY AL-Star Ocean Blue in my head it's the "blue Lamy". Now that I'm starting to get more pens that may break down as a system. But frankly I think their names in my head are a picture of them as much as words.

    I was taught to write with pencil for 6 months, and fountain pen from there on. My handwriting still looks worse with ballpoint. With me it's less grip and pressure, but more that no matter what is in my hand, I will try to go faster than I am able to write. A fountain pen will throw up several warning signs if you do this. A ballpoint pen will let you put your hand on the hot plate and deal with the consequences after.

    Ah Pilot, thanks for keeping decadence going strong. How about making a version of this set based on the Pilot Metropolitan, lol?
    The phrase "ancient Chinese secret" was used in '70s television commercials by Calgon.

    Lol "Ball point pen = sticks of nonsense" too funny! Should make the $500 question a Brian's 2.0 reboot package to purchase...really great choices. QOTW: I call my teal Metropolitan, Cannibal because it ate a piece of my Noodlers Ahab. I was cleaning pens and the little rubber piece on the Arab converter got stuck in the lid of the Metropolitan and it would not come out no matter what I tried. Still trying to find a replacement so I can use my Ahab again. 😡 Guess I'm a little bitter towards my Metro! Hope Italy will be a fun trip! 🇮🇹

  • @aceeccc
    @aceeccc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a lot of trouble with ballpoints because the ball has less friction than fountain pen. most of the time. I like pens with some feedback bc I'm used to pencils and ballpoints are actually a little hard for me to control because most of them are the opposite of that.

    • @aceeccc
      @aceeccc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's also easier to control the ball rolling on a ballpoint with tighter grip and pressing down harder....which leads to the phenomena that a lot of people starting to use fpens have to adjust back on the pressure etc

    Hey Brian,
    I have a question for you. I love my fountain pens with the hided nib. They are my favorite, but I noticed that dry ink pile up under the cap, and the flow is disturbed, even if I clean those regularly following your instructions. Now they skip, and I cannot use them anymore. I use a regular Oxford blue that I got from your shop. Can you explain how to clean those pen properly? Can the nib be revealed somehow for better cleaning?

    Not happy with Pilot's decision regarding their 100th Anniversary celebration decision. Quite frankly it comes awfully close to being the One Finger Salute to everyone outside of Japan who respects the company, enjoys collecting its products, enjoys using its products. Very disappointing but at least Pilot is consistent.
    So the smoke version of the Custom 823 is now officially available in America. Along with other Pilot models you couldn't get in the U.S., oh.... unless you went on eBay or Amazon and ordered directly from a respected seller in Japan. One who happily charged the lower Japanese price for Japan Only Pilot models. That's how I got my solid color Custom 74 with an EF nib. Sure, no warranty. But for many collectors that's a small issue.
    As for that $500 question, I'd go with my Steel Age Homo Sapiens from Visconti that I picked up on sale just after that variation was discontinued. Got it for $450. In America we don't mention tax when talking about pricing. So I won't mention that. Along with an Aston leather pen sleeve, and a bottle of Noodler's Black, I'm good! Moleskin notebook with that should put it right at $500. No one said it had to be full retail.
    *QOTW:*
    No. I don't name my pens.

    Hi GPC, I love the way those new Namiki Pens look, but the way Brian pronounces Chinkin is a little cringe-worthy to me. The correct pronounciation is closer to "cheen-keen" because the Japanese pronunciation of the letter I is the same way we say the letter E. Thanks, and sorry for the nitpicking.

  • @SuperMikestreet
    @SuperMikestreet 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So. First. I’m a newbie. I have a cartridge converter and the pen was a gift and customer made. When I fill the converter with ink it’ll write nice and wet for a while then dry out. I have to take the pen apart and push some of the ink through to get it writing again. Is this common with converters or is this a problem with either the pen or the converter?

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cap might not be a very tight seal allowing the nib to dry up. That said, it's not super uncommon to have to force more ink into the feed especially if it's a broader nib. - Colin

For years, Brian extolled the virtues of the Pilot Custom 74. It costs the same as the Lamy 2000 and it comes in blue instead of basic black. Has the real Brian been replaced by a doppelganger?
