    I did some brief googling, so take what I say with a grain of salt, as I am not especially familiar with Kamchatka. I think that desolate wasteland appearance you saw isn't actually a true desert. That is volcanic sand. Plants cant grow in the volcanic sand, so it looks like a desert, but it actually gets much more rainfall than deserts do. Kamchatka has a lot of volcanic activity and some legendary volcanoes.
    With that said, there are places in the world with wildly different climates in short distances. Come to Washington State some time. You can drive from temperate rainforest, to a close up view of glaciers, and then to a desert in a single day.
