Romero would have probably laughed and called it cool Carmack would probably just go "Mmmm" and then think about where he went wrong and how he can improve
I zone out on Toxin Refinery. We had the shotgun information in the google doc for practice commentary but Matty added a few pellets. Heck even my info was incorrect with a spread of 3-45 but i'm fixing it right now in my docs.
That math doesn't add up. Assuming RNG-based damage, If a shotgun sergeant fires 3 pellets and can do 9 to 45 damage, then each pellet does 3 to 15 damage. 7 (your pellets) x 3 (the minimum damage of a single pellet from a SS's gun) is not 35 (the minimum damage of your SG assuming all the pellets hit and do minimal damage). Instead, each pellet from your gun does 5 to 15 damage. If it's based on how many pellets hit, then the math doesn't add up at all, as 35x7 =/= 105 and 9x3 =/= 45. Shouldn't the true damage range of each weapon, then, be 5 to 105 (1 pellet hits at 5 dmg / all 7 pellets hit at 15 dmg) and 3 to 45 (1 pellet hits at 3 dmg / all 3 pellets hit at 15 dmg) (assuming less pellets hit if you're far enough away), respectively?
My bad I misunderstood your comment. You're right that it wouldn't make sense for the player and shotgun guy's pellets to be the same but fortunately they're not. Player shotguns shoot 7 of the 5-15 pellet while the shotgunners shoot 3 , 3-9 pellets. Funny how that works even though you use the same gun 😛 What is true is that the shotgun will never reach 35 or 105 (the DooM wiki places the minimum and maximum as 45 and 100 respectively) because of the RNG table. But again that wasn't your point so my bad for misreading.
Honestly, people always think of Doom as of 'that game with no story' but which modern game would have to balls to kill the protagonist at end of first act, so after you die you go to hell and fight demons there?
If it hadn't already been done, Yoko Taro probably would've tried it. Hideo Kojima did a variation on it, but MGSV was already halfway out of his hands by then.
You only go to hell in Inferno. The second chapter is on Deimos iirc, and doomguy discovers in the end of the level that deimos is floating above hell itself.
People've mentioned the last two saves being the Icon's intro speech, but I burst out laughing when I saw wow.wad on the list. Mordeth 2 is pretty funny too.
@28:15 The correct explanation is that Actors (the name for all objects in the engine, monsters, items, projectiles, switches, the player, etc.) are infinitely tall.
Not correct, you can walk over and under projectiles and items, actually everything has a z coordinate (except rocket splash damage I guess), that you can't have 2 actors on top of each other is more of a rule than an engine limitation as this was easily "fixed" in doom clones like heretic.
It still absolutely holds up, I recommend trying out the community made maps with a source port if you haven't. Still a large subset of players and mappers to this day churning out great content every week.
Recently played through Doom, beat episode 4 for the first time (I guess, I didn't remember any of the later levels), and went through Sigil 1 and 2 for the first time (on EASY). This entire speedrun is like 2x as long as some individual levels took me.
actually, when in childhood I played doom, I thought that Plutonia and evilution are actual doom and doom 2 )) When I realized that actual Doom has about of 9 levels I was so confused )
Was this vanilla doom? Chocolate? Edit: I found a reply in comments "Crispy Doom 5.1, Fork of Chocolate Doom". I thought it looked more like chocolate than vanilla.
Personally I always preferred the original Doom levels, to the sequels. The older ones anyway. I my opinon the map design and layouts got way too complex with too many tiny rooms and corridors as people got better with the map tools.
@@JesuszillaS Playing through Doom 2 now after playing Romero's Sigil maps for the first time and the lack of details by comparison is shocking. I hardly remember any of the levels despite playing the game every few years for decades.
It drives me crazy that he doesn't use F2 and F3 to access the Save Game and Load Game menus. He seems to know so much about the game but he doesn't know the shortcut keys, being a speedrunner and no less. :D Otherwise, well played!
I talked about it in another comment but I purposely use two save points in marathon runs. The second slot is my safety save that was necessary on the E4M6 cyberdemon map. If I relied only on the quick saves I might have gotten stuck.
The guy who mentioned there was no Z-axis was incorrect. There is depth in Doom. You can dodge underneath projectiles and hit your head on the ceiling.
He's using Crispy Doom. A source port that very similar to the original DOS version except it runs on modern PCs without needing DOSBOX, uncapped frame rate and twice the resolution.
Crispy Doom 5.1, Fork of Chocolate Doom. In my previous Doom runs on GDQ I used Competition doom another fork of Chocolate. Difference that Competition doom ran at 35 FPS.
Normally when you enter the area past that, the wall closes behind you, trapping you for a while. He manipulates the shotgun guy to stand where that wall is, so the wall won't close, so he can get back out quickly.
Z wanted to be speshul for some wack reason. We Muricans lobotomized it to fall in line. Unfortunately, it occasionally relapses from Canadian influence.
Old community rules and I prefer that the standard is kept to Ultra-violence. Enemy numbers change based on the chosen difficulty and believe me when I say "Im Too Young To Die" is empty and lacks interesting decision making and health management.
tbh I wished that other games would have a highest difficulty section as well. Duke 3D on easy, blood on easy, every game on easy. it bores me. I'm glad that at least doom is run at UV.
@@NrGDime Doesn't difficulty also affect splash damage on rockets which makes certain rocket jumps not possible on lower difficulties too? I seem to recall that being a factor
This is my first time playing Doom (the first one) and I still dont understand how you're a space marine yet you fight demons in hell. Wouldn't you the player a space marine be fighting aliens?
You want a hard challenge ? I have done Maps of Chaos Doom 2 with Brutal Doom 21 in Ultra violence and 0 death, after something like 10 days. THIS is a nightmare. Really.

Misinformation at 2:40, your shotgun fires 7 pellets and can deal 35 to 105 damage. The shotgun guys fire 3 pellets so they can deal 9 to 45 damage.
