Hindenburg looked when he was President of Germany like a King-Substitute, who was standing in for the Kaiser until he could be restored, or his son. A lot of people wanted just that. Sadly, Hindenburg was almost senile by 1933, and appointed Hitler as Chancellor.

It's a tradition out of modesty and was still done in WW2 for example by Gerd von Rundstedt.

After WW l the headgear of german policemen switched from Leatherhelmet with point to the Tschako you see in this clip, before 1914 only, Jäger, technical troops and elderly Reserve troops used this kind of helmet.
