If I make my proposed trip to Holland Nick spring to see the country and all its bulb glory and I passed through the town ofKampen I will keep an eye out for your sir name. When I was checking that information about the town I came upon a picture taken circa 1880 of a town official were striking resemblance to you. I am not pulling your leg here. I have grown many types of orchids including cattleya types for more years and then I will admit to. I have a fairly good library of books from beginner to advanced. With that said I have learned more from a handful of your videos quite quickly and then I have from any of the books I’ve ever read. One of the best teachers of course is trial and error but it certainly helps quite a bit when you have the knowledge. Never seems to get old when you’re able to flower or plant that you’ve grown for for five or six years especially the plants that are for a challenge. So thanks again and I hope you keep posting you’re an excellent teacher.

Your Kampen discussion made me wonder about my family’s origins over there. I’ve friends on Facebook with a relative who still lives over there, so I sent him a message asking if we’re from that town!

Thanks for another fabulous video. I think both my Cattleya amethystoglossas will be fine. I was quite lucky as it wasn't the best time to repot. The one in better condition sulked for a week before the new roots started to extend, the best part, the growing tips have more than doubled in length, it must be happy. The one with hardly any roots, has taken 3 weeks but the growing tips are finally extending. Not bad for a freebie. I would have probably killed them if not for you. Because of your videos I was able to figure out what they wanted. I make sure they have at least 4 hours of good light in the morning, a fast feed first thing in the morning and 18C minimum at night. I have started to treating most my bifoliates this way and they seem to like it. Thank you for sharing.
Was very thrilled to find out about you via Thomas Green’s My Green Pet’s TH-cam channel. I immediately went to your channel and started watching. I was very excited because you are in Austin and I am in Houston. I have just recently started growing orchids (graduated from grave digger to grower!) with mainly rescue phals. I purchased some Vandas at the beginning of the year and those live outside. I wanted to expand my collection. I received 6 more orchids the first of August, 3 of which were cattleyas (1 uni-foliate; 2 bi-foliates). Fortunately (or unfortunately) right as I received my orchids, I watched your video on NEVER repotting cattleyas unless there is a new growth… I have currently left them in their existing pots. The bi-foliates are potted in sphagnum moss; the uni-foliate is in some type of twig-ish medium. The good news one of the bi’s (C Yuan Dung Sweet ((C Monte Elegante x C Yen Redface)) and the uni (LC Org ades Grand White Swan ((LC Mildred Rives Orchidglad x LC Persepolis Splendor)) now have new growths coming out. I have not put them outside as of yet. I wanted them to get acclimated to my environment; they are in a South facing window that gets lots of light. I have terra cotta pots for all 3 if okay to repot. My questions are: (1) can I repot at this time of the year? (2) What is the preferred medium? (3) Ok to move outside? Thank you!
Hi Sara Jo, TH-cam is being weird because I could have sworn I'd answered this question. My apologies for the tardy response! 1) You can repot any time of year as long as there is new root growth! 2)I grow with large grade orchiata bark in clay pots 3) I think you can keep them outside until about mid-November. Bring them inside when nighttime temps are in consistently in the low 50's and try to have the roots dry for the cool nights.

I absolutely LOOOVE Miller's Tropicals! I have that same c. tigrina, but mine is not doing too well, and sort of well at the same time. I had to repot it shortly after I bought it because the media developed mold and it has been sulking for like 2 years. This year when I thought everything was going fine because it had put up a root system and had a new growth, all but 3 of the older bulbs dropped their leaves and dried off. The good thing is that a piece (or a smaller seedling?) fell off it when I was repotting it and I put that one in a wooden basket and is doing much better.
@@SVKLOrchids Oh yeah, expletives were shouted when I noticed all the leaves on the floor, but because the other piece is doing well I got over it quickly. And yes, I'm in Central Texas too. Going to Miller's open houses is my Disney World.

I have a loooong way to go with my tigrina / leopoldii 😅 my seedlings are smaller than the smallest growth on your orchid! I’ve tried to source a near blooming size, but until I find one I thought get some seedlings ‘just in case’ ... I grow with hope! Great video! 👍🏼 thank you
Thanks for another fun and informative contribution! The C. porphyroglossa, is it a large plant? Couldn't really tell from the video, but what caught my attention was that it doesn't have high light requirements and also the fact that it is intensely fragrant.
Karl Kawahara The C. porphyroglossa is not tall compared to other bifoliates I’ve grown, at least in this stage of life (first bloom). I’ve honestly never grown another one, so I’m not entirely sure if it’s maximum size! I suspect is not as large as amethystoglossa or tigrina. The intense fragrance caught me off guard, as well as the low light requirement advice from Cezar Wenzel!
Very interesting to learn about the difference between bi's and uni's! Had no idea the bi's were such a pain, lol! Do you know of any 'easier to grow' porphyroglossa hybrids?
My Green Pets Unfortunately I don’t! Porphyroglossa is not widely used in breeding! It’s an odd flower, so there isn’t a lot of incentive to use it as a parent.
Hi Stephen! Here I am at least a year after you posted this. II’ve learned my lesson and 2 of my bi-foliates have forgiven me, I think. Not so far as to flower but new roots and growth. Did you do an update on the last orchid?

I’m assuming by your awesome explanation that these are actually then uni- foliates that grew a second leaf. Can I ask you just to please clarify something to me? When you are repotting you’re bi-foliate, you’re changing all the medium right? You’re not just up potting? If they are not growing out of the pot, will you repot just to change your bark?
Do you have an example you could show of a bifoliate cattleya that looks like one a mere mortal could grow? Otherwise, I've purchased miniature bi-catts as they've bloomed and they have double leaves, but they're small! Under 6 inches. Hmmm. . .

(I thought I just sucked at Cattleyas) Not sure on your thoughts about semi-hydro as a method of growing, but would you consider these good candidates for such? I have only ever done Phalaenopsis in semi-hydro as a test, but the way you describe the needs of bifoliates, I would consider it for them, as they would have a reservoir to pull from and I don't have to fear missing out or being late on a watering.
Stefan Neher I’ve seen very successful Cattleya growers using this method. I had some success with walkeriana in s/h but messed it up when I repotted and didn’t tie the plant down so it wiggled in the pot and died. I think it could be successfully done with bifoliates. Just repot at the right time! This is especially important for s/h because all the old roots die.
Seeing the Zacrehodes (?spelling?) that grabbed the wood piece, I was wondering if you ever thought about putting any of your orchids into the oak trees and letting them grow 'wild'?
I have bought a schomburgkia tibicinis . It is potted in coconut husk and has outgrown the small pot. Do I need to wait for new root to repot it? Reply will be greatly appreciated
I wonder where the Walkeriana fits into this. I have an Alba. that spent the first 5 years of its life with a single leaf per pseudobulb and actually bloomed this way. It was crawling out of its pot so I decided to mount it with more light and more frequent watering but faster drying. Now it has decided to go bifoliate. Unfortunately for me it decided to postpone blooming this year but I assume it is now happier growing instead of blooming. Does sound typical or reasonable?
Just when I have been wondering about the differences between uni & bifoliate cattleyas. I’m a relatively new orchid grower and have 2 seedlings that went from one leaf to two last month. Maybe the second leaf is a sheath? I don’t know what the difference is yet.
The town of Kampen is about 40,000 people give or take 1000 and is located along theOverijeel river. It was a trading city and a member of the hanseatic league. If you can pronounce the river’s name you should win a prize perhaps a long wished for orchid. LOL Well that’s the geography lesson for the day.

A common fix for a large Catt that isn’t blooming is increase the light. If you use the sun, do it incrementally so you don’t burn it.

I prefer to not touch the roots, so I’ll drop the whole pot into a new pot of the media is still good.

Walkeriana with two leaves means its VERY happy! Hopefully it blooms this fall for you.

Paige could be a sheath! The leaf should be kind of sideways and the sheath should be straight up.
