  • Now I've been an EV driver for over a year, it's time to look at servicing EVs. What's involved? Can you do it yourself? How much does it cost, compared to a petrol or diesel?
    I've come to @TheHendyGroup to chat to their Director of Servicing about all things associated with servicing EVs and he's got some great advice too.
    I'm looking at all aspects of owning an EV. If you want to join me on #MyEVJourney, please subscribe and don't forget to click on the alert button for notifications.
    I'm also on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook too! Find out more here.. linktr.ee/philippaforrester

    Because EV's don't require as much servicing, I found that the main dealer i use was making things up to service. For instance, they recommended that the front brake pads and discs should be replaced. I refused and examined them myself and found that the discs were of good width, with no lips or corrosion and the pads had enough meat on them for years of future use and weren't cracked or worn unevenly. They were tring to scam me and are still in use over a year later. Ev brakes wear down much slower because of regenerative braking.

      That's a thing at all dealerships. They always upsell things to people that don't know any better. My VW dealer pulled the brake pad sales pity on me at 50k miles. Now at 80k still original pads. They lost my business that day.

    Big question. One: how long do the batteries last and Two: how much do the replacement batteries cost and Three: how do we dispose of the old batteries?
    Q One: 8 to 10 years.
    Q Two: $10,000 to $25,000 dollars.
    Q Three: There are currently no recycling plants to deal with used Lithium ion batteries, this simply means that they will most likely end up on land fill sites. The other possibility, they will be stored on vacant land areas out of sight out of mind for future concerns. Now that wasn't mentioned by the service manager. As a retired DC electrician, I can assure you that if you come in contact with 1,000 VDC, you will not survive......

    • @wolfgangpreier9160
      @wolfgangpreier9160 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      "One: how long do the batteries last" 1000 cycles if you stress them - always drive 250+
      - Thats 1000 times the battery capacity. e.g. 75kWh = 375km = 375.000km total range until they have lost 30%.
      If you use them regularly you can expect 1500-2000 cycles. Or about 600.000-700.000 km
      If you use them very gently you can expand their lifetime to 3000-5000 cycles. That may be up to 1.5 million kilometers.
      Nobody knows whether the batteries have a timeout. Nobody has found any up until now. You can not answer this question at all.
      "Two: how much do the replacement batteries cost" Much. Give me a manufacturer and i can found out
      " Three: how do we dispose of the old batteries? " Sorry if i am being sarcastic here.
      Sure. Just put them in the bin. What do you expect? Don't you throw away throusands every year?
      Of course batteries are recycled. They are a valuable ressource.
      " There are currently no recycling plants to deal with used Lithium ion batteries" Thats nonsense. Of course there are. In which land do you live? Europe? There are 3 plants. USA? There are 3 active and 15 more plants coming Online in the next years. I do not know about Asia.

    This is a very interesting topic and worth exploring further. Being a used car buyer making sure the service history is as per the manufacturers requirements is important to make sure the warranty is'nt void. EV's don't need servicing so much and on average use the brakes a 1/3 of the amount. The problem is some legacy automakers are asking for the cars to come and replacing things like coolant and brake fluid when they don't really need it. I recommend a health check on any car once a year though. Or on a 3 yr and older car a Hevra approved garage to do the MOT. 😉⚡🔋

There are a few "qualified" garages local to me, but not having used any of them before, how do I know I can trust them? I questioned the labour price seeing it is only one man doing the service - Their answer was - That's the price for a service! One has to have the servicing done on their EV, so to protect the 7 year guarantee of the EV battery! Buying an EV to help the ozone layer is costing those who have went down the same road as I and many others - Those who are not willing to buy an EV can run about in any combustion vehicle and either service it themselves, which is no big fete! Now I wished I was like those, as I know a bit about combustion cars! EV owners are being robbed with the servicing of their EV

  • @warwickbunn1250
    @warwickbunn1250 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That was fascinating and an area of EVs that I've not seen covered before. Well done. 😁
    The considerable expense that the garage needs to invest to service a vehicle that requires less time to work on or charge for parts must make the economic profile of the business very tricky. Less small garages will be prepared to risk that investment, so there will be fewer garages, and only the big dealers will survive, if at all. Then prices will rise. A secondhand vehicle is going to be prohibitively expensive to repair, resulting in a shorter life span with massive depreciation. So I don't see cheap electric vehicles that are cheap to run as the future.
    What then may happen is you don't own the vehicle, as is currently happening with sky-high prices for ice and EV cars already.
    A great inciteful film. Keep them coming.

    Then goes on to highlight due to the additional load, tyres need to be specified.
    I would imagine replacement schedules come in more frequently due to this fact, along with the 5 component parts for the disc brake assembly too.
    Tyres are very bad for the environment, both in manufacture and disposal, and so to own an EV for its green credentials is at best misguided, the charging profile also diminishes this aspiration too.
    It may well turn out that the only true function for an EV vehicle is within a 15 minute city/20 minute neighbourhood landscape, which are currently being rolled out.

    • @buzzyphantom
      @buzzyphantom ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I suggest you research further, brakes generally last longer as a lot of the braking is done by regeneration, using the motor to move potential energy of the vehicle back into the battery. ICE vehicles move that potential energy into heat and noise, lost out of the energy cycle forever. In 12 years of EV ownership I have never changed a set of pads in around 144,000 miles of EV driving. All vehicles wear out tyres EVs included, in my experience I see very similar tyre wear on my EV's than I did on my ICE vehicles. Power delivery is smoother and seamless so that accounts for some reduction in wear, and as you're not 'hitting' the brakes to slow down then wear is minimised here too.
      As for ICE it's a largely doomed technology, complex and difficult to maintain, modern ICE require complex tools to ensure that they are operating efficiently (35%) and they still go wrong and are expensive to fix. Not to mention that once you have used up a tank full of stored energy from millions of years ago, all that heat has just been moved into the environment, which is the last place it needs to be.
      Im not saying EV's are perfect as actually the best car is no car, but, until we can all have affordable, accessible and reliable public transport its considerably better than the ICE age.

    Special Tires/Tyres required for EV cars now, some of these snippets of unknown information are now being given out perhaps accidentally but it does illustrate that you are being hoodwinked by the sellers. These cars are manufactured so that only the dealerships can handle any work requirements and COST IS NEVER EVER MENTIONED because they know that will jeopardise a sale. The final laughable part was the giant insulated (to resist 1000 volts) hook that can drag the auto mechanic away from the vehicle in case of any “incident”

      I drive with regular tires. Why not? Hankook, Vredestein, Kleber, Pirelli (original). I have about 350.000km with all my EVs and had to go to the shop 6 times. 2 x for warranty repairs and 4 times for manufacturer mandated yearly maintenance. Those yearly maintenance were expensive and only needed by Skoda, Fiat and Peugeot.
      The "real" EVs do not need any maintenance whatsoever. And they are not sold via dealers. And they are chepaer than any fossil car of similar size.

      Yes mining is bad, but for most mining it’s not just one mineral they’re mining for in one place. There’s probably more cobalt/lithium in your house electronic items than in an ev.
      But the difference is after that the EV particle pollution levels drop to hardly anything, where ICE cars are still mining for oil throughout its life and polluting until it dies.

      @lordj805 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Hell-Hound1 Just chemistry, in a piston engine car, you only carry half the energy to make the car go, the other half comes from outside the vehicle, air; for the fuel to burn. In an EV, you carry 100% the energy for the vehicle to move. in an petrol car fire, mostly people have time to get out, and fire services can put it out in seconds or minutes with just water, In an EV fire; this occurs in seconds, is like a blast furnace, and nothing can put it out, as it has way more energy and chemically provides its own oxygen to burn.

    • @lordj805
      @lordj805 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As an aside, if you put your hand in a gallon of petrol, and strike a cigarette lighter the lighter wont light because its under a liquid; there will be a spark from the flint in the lighter, but no ignition or fire from the petrol. chemistry again, petrol is not flammable or explosive, petrol vapour is, that's how piston engines work, diesel is even safer, you can pour it on a barbecue, light it with a match, it will never go boom, hell you can put a match out in a bucket of diesel if you want. It's just chemistry, prove me wrong.

      @@colinpearce3249 You can not stop a battery fire with fire extinguishers. Not with a freon bath as IT systems use it. Not with Water or sprinklers. Not with foam. If its the start of a fire you may be able to quench and cool it with much distilled water.
      If you have a fire protection blanket from your fire department laying around you can protect the rest of your equipment and building. But if its a full blown battery fire you can only leave the premises and let it burn out.
