Couldn't have been two more different styles, degrees of athleticism, etc. Georgetown DID get many calls in the second half, almost like the 2002 NBA Western Conference finals. Alonzo finally took control of the game down the stretch but without him, Princeton would've prevailed. They may have even gone further. Their offense was so different it would've been tough for anyone back then to contend with.
Loved John Thompson's approach to basketball. Deep bench. He had Sophomore and Junior players with more experience than most teams Seniors, and they were all ready to play.
I went to HS and grew up playing sports with Kit Mueller. He was not only also good at football - He may have been one of the nicest star athletes you could ever meet. Just a great dude all around. He became a hedge fund manager afterwards but despite the likely high income, I can guarantee he still the same down to earth guy he was in 1986 through 1989

Kudos to Carrill, but Carrill's comments about the second half's first 8 calls being fishy doesn't hold water. All legit calls. Had they not been called it would have of course played to his advantage being undersized and outmatched athletically. Just being the underdog doesn't mean you're going to get every call. Lead Ref Paparo never played favorites. All felt his overzealous tendencies equally. Though Princeton lost this game, I thing they beat Georgetown in a different way. The Hoyas remained flat against ND, NC State, and then eventually lost to Laettner's Duke squad. It was like avenging their previous loss to Syracuse in the BE Tourney was the bigger victory. I'm a lifetime Hoya fan and I felt like that team peaked too early that year. Too bad for 'Zo and the rest not ever reaching the Final Four.
This is what makes the NCAA tournament so special that the smaller school's can beat the big school's it's David and Goalith at it's finest and it's why every March we watch! Thanks Princeton!

Northern Iowa over Kansas From 2007-2009, every 1 seed made the Elite Eight, and with the exception of Davidson in '08, they faced either a 2 or 3 seed. Very few large upsets took place after the occasional 12 or 13 in the first round. The tournament was getting predictable. Then this happened. A top-ranked Kansas team that had only lost two games all year didn't even make it to the Sweet 16, sparking a tournament where nothing was predictable, and we had a ton of upsets, even though a 1 seed did win it all. The next year was even crazier.
BYU was actually a 3 seed that year but they made the Sweet 16. Richmond was in the Sweet 16 as well. Yeah the final was bad (even though I am a UConn fan) but there were so many other great games in the tournament.
I swear I knew Princeton would be a tough game and thought they were underseeded. When the pairing was announced I knew it.The reason was that they had defeated a good Seton Hall team the year before and played them tough that year. That registered with me. No other reason. Everyone loves a Cinderella win, but in fairness to Georgetown, it’s tough to be cast as a national villain when you’re just trying to get a win, the same as your opponent. Kentucky felt that unfair sting in the 1978 title game, when its veteran team pressured by its great legacy played a very young bubbly Duke team. Kentucky was not allowed to feel pleased to have won, and neither were the Hoyas in this game.
I went into Walsh's Tavern with my late Mom just before half of this game. Mom asked the score, I said "Georgetown's up 25-17," only to correct myself a minute later. But for a late turnover, Princeton would have won this game. For all intents and purposes, they did. Princeton +22 was a heck of a bet.
