It's from one of the arena fights, maybe 100-man or 200-man battle. To unlock 200 man battle and get full rewards you need all letters of recommendation, see this for details: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/xbox360/945075-tales-of-vesperia/answers/15330-200-man-melee.
But be careful, if you equip barbatos' ring during a battle you can't take it off for that battle, which means you can use no items for that battle.
