Except that they took up the case for the reason that evidence that would of introduced reasonable doubt was purposely ommitted, for reason it was to prejudicial towards a guilty verdict.
Also, attempting to completely change your appearance, and being caught in your vehicle with a huge amount of cash, false identity documentation in an attempt to cross the international border to escape from a federal conviction for capital murder really confirms that you're truly guilty in my opinion.

He worked at St. Mary, Longbeach hospital as the Emergency Room surgeon, living in a condo, dating beautiful girls, sailing on a yacht and driving antique cars all the while his in-laws are helping the Army and FBI search for the "killers". He was eventually tried in a civilian court in 1979, convicted, and sentenced to three consecutive life terms for the murder of his spouse and two baby girls which he had blamed on hippy intruders. He was/is a selfish, smug character, just like Scott Peterson. But unlike Peterson, Mac was let out of jail for nineteen months due to a technicality, but the Supreme Court ruled to send him back in 1982 where he has been ever since. Absolutely. Who goes fishing nearly one hundred miles away on Xmas eve day without bringing home any fish? And then decides to wash clothes, eat pizza, shower, (to get rid of more evidence) all before calling one’s mother-in-law to tell them your wife is “missing”? No one but the culprit. Also Scott made that cell phone call with Laci’s corpse in his boat on the way to the bay. What a scumbag. Amber Frey probably took two showers a day for months after she found out what he did to Laci. I feel as bad for her as I do for poor Laci and for Sharon Rocha. Even now the Peterson Family is in denial because they have a notorious felon in their bloodline. Their remorse for Laci never seemed sincere.

He came forward with his "fishing" trip after a guy at the marina identified him. His original story with other people was he was golfing. There was also the fact that the dead bodies were found where he was fishing.
