OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY I got my Clyde's planner last week. I need to go check my comment. These are really awesome & I'm new to cast iron, this eraser is amazing!
I have one huge cast iron skillet that my oldest son gave me. It’s very deep and huge. I have used salt and steel wool. I have removed a little bit but it’s in very bad shape. I have cooked with cast iron skillet’s for going on 50 years. 🤗👍
I honestly didn't think it would work. I'm pleasantly surprised. How do you get the gunky buildup off the bottom of the cast iron? My grandfather always put his in the fireplace ashes . I can't remember anything other than that. Thank you !! Sending Love from Georgia !! 🍑
I didn't think it would work that well , I love it. I have several cast iron skillets and this is definitely a much easier way to get the rust off . Thanks for the chance to win one 👍 I would love to know where to buy some. Love your videos
I've used steel wool with good success. Their magic eraser seems to do well also. When the wife and I got married 26 years ago both our families protested so we just kind of eloped. My mother was the only one who bought us anything as a gift. She bought us one 11 inch cast iron frying pan. Today that pan has had thousands of meals having been cooked in it and in the early years many things burnt in it,lol. We have a great selection of lodge cast iron, but nothing will ever replace that first one that was there in our lil apartment on day 1.
I’ve always used steel wool as well (or Brillo). If I happen to burn something on it, steel wool does the job; then I wash it with water & dish soap, dry it with a towel and then immediately cover it with oil again and wipe off excess with paper towel. When seasoned correctly, most times I don’t even need to wash the pan after cooking. I just wipe it clean with paper towel. It’s beautiful! Love my Lodge cast iron 11” fry pan.
@@Snell4889 I'm most intrigued by your marriage success story! Congratulations on 26 years .many times when all you have to start with is each other. You grow stronger. My hubby inherited a lot of cast iron cookware from his Grandma who inherited from her Mother. Much of it is in the same condition of that rusted skillet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for giving me confidence that I may/can bring these items back to their former glory.
Wish i would of had one of them years ago. I found a very old square skillet at our cabin shortly after we bought it. It was in a old shed and it was rusty rusty rusty. I wasnt sure what to do with it at first. When we were having a burn pile going i laid the rusty pan in the fire and low and behold it burnt most of the rust off it. I managed to scrub the rest off by hand. Then reseasoned it. That was well over 20 years ago...I love good cast iron pans and Lodge is probably my favorite. I love that the skillets have a second handle for those of us who are getting older and weaker. Great video Stacy.

My parents used those pans to cook both over an open fire and small camp stove, so they bring back great memories! I'm planning on ordering those rust erasers to try to get those pans back in working condition! Thank you for showing me how to save my memories!!
I've used brass wire wheels that fits in a drill. Takes about 10 minutes and it also cleans off the burnt on grease and such. Finish it in the oven like you did a few time till it looks like it should. When you use a wire wheel it's best done outside or in a work shop--gets kind of dusty. Love your channel!

Hi Doug and Stacy, I am a new subscriber on your homestead family. After watching your youtube. It reminded me when I was younger, How much I missed living on our farm. So now I am looking to find some land to maybe start my homestead. I am learning a lot from you both. and I am enjoying watching you both. God bless you both and I am looking forward of watching more from you both. You both rock.
I found an old rusted cast iron skillet in a shed outside. After seeing this I Immediately ordered this eraser. Can't wait to get it and clean up that skillet. I also want to clean my Lodge Dutch Oven that a friend let rust.
All I can say is wow oh wow I ordered 2 of them after watching this video a little over a week ago..you guys this is an amazing product I've removed rust on everything I could find..oh my I'm ordering more..
They came just as they did to stacy ready to go I haven't found anything it didn't remove rust from I have 6 sons with lots of tools ordered them some too..
Ha! I was wrong, it did work!!! Sure thought it was gonna be a waste! I used your oven method to make ghee and it is fool proof! Made 6 lbs of it for my milk allergy daughter! She was so excited! Thx so much!💖
Have to admit I was skeptical that it would work. On the other hand, Lodge has proven itself to be a good brand and I don't think they'd put out an inferior product. This gives me renewed hope for one of my pans!
Lodge in actuality my least favorite brand. I'm not saying it's bad, I have a couple of older Lodge pans that are great! I'm just more partial to Griswold, Wagner and BSR.
I have my great grandmothers cast iron Dutch oven. My husband has his grandmothers cast iron Dutch oven. Two of our favorite pieces. We use them all of the time.
Oh, I love my cast iron. Makes me cry when I see any rust. Would love to have one of these erasers. Love off grid with Doug & Stacy. Love your farm. So envious!
Thank you so very much! Out here in the west, rusty cast iron pots and pans are fairly common at garage sales. We are now going on a buying binge this spring!!
I figured it would work since it was made by Lodge. I have always just used a steel wool pad. It works great for me. I season with coconut oil. Hoping to make some ghee one day soon. Shalom. 🙏🏻
@@barbarainalabama460 I'm new to cast iron cooking & was thinking about seasoning w/ coconut oil. I've heard it has a high burn point. Is this true? I'm guessing it works well for u.

My wife uses cast iron and loves them. I burn everything I try to cook in them so not my cup of tea with cast iron. Looks great Mrs Stacey. Thanks for the tips!
I remember being told as a child to never wash the cast iron pots. I still use some cast iron skillets, and season them but I will put a cloth over them when I'm finished to keep any dust off of them. The new cast iron eraser was impressive! I will have to look for them. Sure wish I knew about them earlier, would have saved me a lot of time on lots and the wood stove. Thanks for sharing, and keep the great tips coming!!
That is good to know! Thanks for showing that Stacy! I've had rust sometimes when I use my cast iron on a campfire and it rains while I'm cooking. Nice to know. I did NOT think it was going to work. I've had to scrub with steel wool to get the rust off my cast iron! That didn't look like it was going to do anything. Wow!
We would take the cast iron skillets that had built up grease on them when we went camping. Put them into the campfire, next morning all clean. Then coat with oil till we got home to season them properly in the oven. You brought back an old memory. Thanks
Well I'm impressed. Also I think it would be even better if it was made in a round disk shape that could be attached to a drill. It would take less elbow grease and less time. But good job, it looks great.
Yesssss! RA here is some days the joints in the fingers and wrist and elbows just can’t handle a little elbow grease to get jobs done . That would be an invention I would buy!!!👍🏻
Lodge is a very trustworthy company in business manufacturing cast iron pans for over a century. When it comes to cast iron, they know what they are doing for their products.
I've heard about this method, never tried it. "Word on the street" is that it can smoke up your house if you try it with a really groady pan. True or false?? :)
@@comesahorseman It stinks a little even if there is nothing in the oven, I haven't noticed any extra stink with a cast iron pan...I mean I didn't put any with mud and algae in there, I did wash that off before I stuck it in the oven LOL
I went to the lodge cast iron sight, but couldn't find the erasers you used I find many things even on Amazon but not those erasers! Where can they be purchased?
That worked good.. I had my questions when you said what it was. I’ve always used vinegar and water. I love my cast iron. It is a very good nonstick surface if you use it and treat it right. Have a great day..!!
I have always used vinegar and water bath to soak off rust, then scrub with soap and water, rinse in the coldest water I have to prevent flash rust and into the oven to dry.
@@karenk7310, that's what I've always done too and if that didn't work I'd just strip it and re-season. I have stacks of cast iron that I need to strip and re-season. I went through some time that I was buying it from flea markets every chance I got. Now I have to do something with it.
Thanks for that Stacy. We've been talking about getting some cast iron cookware. We hate the normal non-stick because it always starts peeling off. And then we start worrying about the health effects
Stacy thank you so much for this demo! I have lots of cast iron to restore and this helped a lot. I will purchase this and season my pans as well. Thanks again!!!
LoveToRead3 you can also let the pan sit in vinegar water then sprinkle baking soda over it and scrub away. Then you can clean it off and do the seasoning process.
That eraser worked. I wish I'd poured boiled water over my pan before I started re-seasoning it. Took ages before my paper towel came clean (versus brown residue from pan). Thanks 😊
I've tried it all and lard is the absolute best! I have my first cast-iron waffle maker in the oven now! 👍 This one is the Log Cabin on. My Griswold is still in transit. . 😁
its not necessary that the pan be placed in an oven after using your preferred method of derusting put what ever thick greasy foodsafe product you want in the pan wipe out the excess and place on stove eye and heat untill smoking remove allow to cool and repeat you can do it once or you can do it more it doesnt matter at all
I had my doubts that it would work, but am super impressed. I think of all the vinegar scrubs I've done to my family heirlooms, to get them back in good shape.... wish I'd had one of these back then! Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Lodge does have some interesting ideas for restoring cast iron. My larger project is our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove. She sat in an unheated camp on our family farm for THIRTY years! I asked to have it taken down to the house barn, where I could attempt to restore her. I used coke, olive oil, fine steel wool and did well with the outside. We brought the stove out to the side lawn and started a hot fire. She smelled like an Italian restaurant :-) However the oven walls are still rusty. I think your pan rust eraser would be too small. Not sure about a drill with a wire disk. Any suggestions? She graces out kitchen and is currently blazing away on this cold morning. A blast from the past!
I love your videos reminds me of when we were first married and poor. Thank God it was the best time of our lives. If I could I would back to those days. Thanks for the memories and your excellent teaching experience you share with everyone we need more of these basic skills . God bless you both

I'm more surprised you made the pan look great with a cool smile, i'm used to people trying to play the one and only super hero turn idiot. Awesome Kitchen....
Thanks for letting us know about the eraser. Great way to remove that stubborn rust. A local flea market has several Lodge cast iron items I'd like for cheap but they are in the same shape as yours when you started. I'll get them and treat mine like that too. Do you think the kerosene lamp sitting above a working stove is a good idea? I don't know how hot that area gets but on the other hand should it get knocked over or something you could have a serious situation. I'd hate to see you lose that beautiful home or you guys get hurt.
Straight up, no, I really didn't think there was anything that could make this task so simple. I'm from old school where you put it in the fire and then have to sand it. This was Awesome! Great move Doug! Thanks Stacey for sharing this little jewel. Be Blessed!

Literally non stick? No, it doesn't work like that. It doesn't matter how smooth you get the bottom concerning non-stick properties. What makes it non-stick is the seasoning. Polymerization is what makes it nonstick. You're just being lazy and ruining your pans.

Where did you order them from?
I ordered them directly from lodge 5.oo each came ups..amazing
Bert Clayton yikes I would be afraid the strong chemicals would be absorbed by the iron.
Trouble with the new pans is. They do not smooth out the cooking surface. They need to be sanded smooth. Then seasoned. Then they are great!
Lodge in actuality my least favorite brand. I'm not saying it's bad, I have a couple of older Lodge pans that are great! I'm just more partial to Griswold, Wagner and BSR.

@@charlescoker7752 From Lil Giant Yes. I have to search garage sales because Lodge hassuch crummy texture.
Great! Next time I see one like that, on the cheap, because of the way it looks, I'm GETTING IT!
havent seen that product , but love the original magic erasers on walls, SS pots..ect I am jealous of your toasty warm home.
I figured it would work since it was made by Lodge. I have always just used a steel wool pad. It works great for me. I season with coconut oil. Hoping to make some ghee one day soon. Shalom. 🙏🏻
Hello Autimuse.
@@barbarainalabama460 I'm new to cast iron cooking & was thinking about seasoning w/ coconut oil. I've heard it has a high burn point. Is this true?
I'm guessing it works well for u.
I generally use grapeseed oil to season my cast iron.
I thought it wouldn’t work as well as it did. Went to Amazon and I ordered me one! Thank you for sharing!
I use cast iron and I would had lost money on that .. that was amazing. Got to get me one of them.ive got a couple of peices needs erase.. God speed.. ..love y'all's place it's beautiful..
My wife uses cast iron and loves them. I burn everything I try to cook in them so not my cup of tea with cast iron.
Looks great Mrs Stacey. Thanks for the tips!
I've been restoring cast iron pans for many years. I use vinegar. It takes longer but there's absolutely no scrubbing.
Add baking soda to your vinegar , it will speed up the process.
I use vinegar as well, works very well.
Spin me a yarn ...how I’m all ears !
I was kinda skeptical but the proof is in the pudding! Good job you sold me on that method. Thanks for a great video.
@@JustinTyme1966 vinegar is an acid baking soda is a base it would foam up and then neutralize the vinegar
I've always used corse salt & a potato to clean mine..steel wool for extra hard jobs. Love Lodge's new way!
That’s wonderful, as I need to do that with several old pans I bought at yard sales. Thank you, Willow
So wild how the ice rain leaves such perfect icicles- very pretty! Nice tip on cleaning the csat iron pans.
My husband buys and sells old vintage knives. He's been using rust erasers for years on knives he needs to clean up some before reselling.
I'd love to buy a knife like that. I'll try to search for him!
@@StoneKathryn his ebay user I'd is doodlefroodle that's where he sells the majority of knives. You can google doodlefroodle and find him.
Great idea for an invention!🤔Make some 💲
I put rusty cast iron in the self cleaning oven and set it on clean and in an hour it is done, just brush off the dust and season it.
I've heard about this method, never tried it. "Word on the street" is that it can smoke up your house if you try it with a really groady pan. True or false?? :)
@@comesahorseman not anymore than self cleaning the oven does. Turn on your overhead fan, and open a window...
@@comesahorseman It stinks a little even if there is nothing in the oven, I haven't noticed any extra stink with a cast iron pan...I mean I didn't put any with mud and algae in there, I did wash that off before I stuck it in the oven LOL
@@candidethirtythree4324: 😂. No, no, by "groady" I meant heavily rusted.
I went to the lodge cast iron sight, but couldn't find the erasers you used I find many things even on Amazon but not those erasers! Where can they be purchased?
Wow! I didn't think the little eraser would work that well. Thanks for sharing.
The rust eraser is something I didn't know about it did wonders
Omg! No way did I think that would work! Thanks Doug for buying that eraser. I have 2 pans that I thought was doomed for the trash pile. Not any more!
I have just fell in love with both of u. U are my favorite homesteaders by far. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Tracey!
I am totally blown away with the results of that cast iron eraser Stacy. Thank you so much for airing this video.
@@karenk7310 I always use really hot water to wash my cast iron and put it straight on to a hot burner and oil it
@@karenk7310, that's what I've always done too and if that didn't work I'd just strip it and re-season. I have stacks of cast iron that I need to strip and re-season. I went through some time that I was buying it from flea markets every chance I got. Now I have to do something with it.
I was listening as I did a chore. With my coffee ready I need to Watch it again! I have a rusted caste iron been puzzle on how not to harm it.
Thanks for that Stacy. We've been talking about getting some cast iron cookware. We hate the normal non-stick because it always starts peeling off. And then we start worrying about the health effects
Thats amazing. I honestly did not think it would work on that rusty pan. Wow I am sold.
Stacy thank you so much for this demo! I have lots of cast iron to restore and this helped a lot. I will purchase this and season my pans as well. Thanks again!!!
The rust eraser is a wonder! Leave it to Lodge to make caring for cast iron easier. I intend to stock up. Thanks for the video - seeing is believing.
I bought 5 pans last spring at antique stores & still haven't figured out how I was gonna clean them. Thanks so much for this!
LoveToRead3 you can also let the pan sit in vinegar water then sprinkle baking soda over it and scrub away. Then you can clean it off and do the seasoning process.
@@intentionallymade thank u!
That eraser worked. I wish I'd poured boiled water over my pan before I started re-seasoning it. Took ages before my paper towel came clean (versus brown residue from pan). Thanks 😊
I was always taught to use lard to season my pans. I reseason them all once a year.
I've tried it all and lard is the absolute best! I have my first cast-iron waffle maker in the oven now! 👍 This one is the Log Cabin on. My Griswold is still in transit. . 😁
Bacon grease... Mmmm
Good to know. I was given a big cast iron kettle for my wood stove and it's rusty inside. Will be awesome to have it all clean
Never thought, saw, heard, or read about putting the pot in upside down. Makes sense. Thank you!
its not necessary that the pan be placed in an oven
after using your preferred method of derusting put what ever thick greasy foodsafe product you want in the pan wipe out the excess and place on stove eye and heat untill smoking remove allow to cool and repeat you can do it once or you can do it more it doesnt matter at all
I had my doubts that it would work, but am super impressed. I think of all the vinegar scrubs I've done to my family heirlooms, to get them back in good shape.... wish I'd had one of these back then! Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
OHHHHHH SOOO BEAUITFULLLLLL IMMMMMMM HEREEEEEEE
I was skeptical that it would work without anything else… such a cool product! Thanks for sharing.
Drill with the wire thing is how I saw it done as a kid by old folks. For something so large I'd say that's be fastest.
I love your videos reminds me of when we were first married and poor. Thank God it was the best time of our lives. If I could I would back to those days. Thanks for the memories and your excellent teaching experience you share with everyone we need more of these basic skills . God bless you both

I had no idea if it would work. I'm impressed. I'm always buying rusted cast irons. A little elbow grease and you have a great frying pan
That’s pretty amazing 😉 I’ll be looking for the “magic eraser” for rust💖

I did not think it would work..But very glad it did,we need all the iron pans we can get. GOOD JOB.
I found 5 coatings makes it so very non-stick.
No wonder mine never got to the 'non stick' phase. I always only did it once, lol.
Love this I have 3 small ones in the shed we got at a garage sale, now I know what to use to clean them. Thank you for all the great informative videos.
I'm more surprised you made the pan look great with a cool smile, i'm used to people trying to play the one and only super hero turn idiot.
Awesome Kitchen....
I honestly didn't think it would work. Seen them for purchase before and passed on buying. Thanks for the demonstration. Great job.
My thought too
I've never put it in the oven to season. I never knew to do that. Excellent information. Thank you.
I rubbed on Crisco and it took off all the rust on all my cast iron. Then, I added rubbed on more Crisco and put it in the oven. No problem.
Straight up, no, I really didn't think there was anything that could make this task so simple. I'm from old school where you put it in the fire and then have to sand it. This was Awesome! Great move Doug! Thanks Stacey for sharing this little jewel. Be Blessed!
Hi Stacy and Doug, Enjoy your videos and informative tips! Stacy, I had never heard of this rust eraser as well. I have a collection of cast iron skillets and love them even tho they are heavy.😊 I have seen cast iron skillets in bad shape, like the one you had and worst, but did not buy at garage sales because I could not image how to clean it! Great tips, keep them coming! Found your channel via watching 'The Fit Farmer ' , when Mike and Lacie visited your beautiful homestead. Stay blessed and safe! 🦋 9/14/20🦋
Welcome Barb!
Honestly, I didn't think it was going to actually take all that rust off. Before you rinsed it, I thought, "That doesn't look rust free"...then you went and rinsed it...oiled it....baked it....it looks new! Way to go, folks. You're truly an inspiration.
I use baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice. Soak overnight then rinse and season. No rust. 🍳
I was sceptical but have been watching you guys awhile but stacy wow hun I'm totally impressed by this..my Male family members sneak off with my cast iron always bring back rusty and who knows what they cooked I them..I'm in awe and gonna get me rust eraser..
I just got off web with lodge got 2 ordered..omg I cant wait to try this out..cuz my fellas bless their hearts are brutal with my cast iron😜however this momma smart I hide my faves😘😂
LOL! Immediately after you started rubbing the pan, I grabbed my phone exclaiming Holy s***! What is that?
Wow! A product that actually works as advertised! Good job Stacy! Enjoy your restored pan.
I'm curious as to what the eraser is made of. If it's natural or not.
I was not totally sure it would work but it sure cleaned up the pan! I am glad you talked about seasoning and which oil to use! Thank you!

I can do the same thing in like ten to fifteen minutes, with my palm sander. And then it's smooth as glass, and literally non-stick.
Literally non stick? No, it doesn't work like that.
It doesn't matter how smooth you get the bottom concerning non-stick properties. What makes it non-stick is the seasoning. Polymerization is what makes it nonstick.
You're just being lazy and ruining your pans.
I believed it would work, because Lodge made it. Great job. Will buy my own "erasers" from Lodge, too. Thanks.
