  • National famously never pays attention to official advice other than when they want to filibuster as to why they’re taking so long for a decision… then they blame the experts as they are waiting on their advice… which they’ll then ignore

My friend is a public servant and is stunned by this government's lack of hearing or sight when it comes to data that contradicts their position. Whether it is anything Māori, the ferries, public service cuts, roading, cuts on excise tax for tobacco, working from home, mining on conservation land, tax cuts etc. - nothing will get in the way of them paying back the interests that put them in power. Wellington is a desert because they keep putting people out of work and seem blithely unaware of the impact to the Wellington economy and more importantly the spirit of the people. We are in the middle of a coalition government led recession.

How long have this coalition of incompetence been ‘governing’ (well mismanaging) NZ? The ‘point’ was about exactly 1 minute before then.

@@Eschatonin6666 As in Britain I do not see any real opposition party exists. Does the Conservative government still exist. No in my opinion. Here Hipkins threw the election and didn't even look a boy scout or parliamentary page in his 10 month paper rule. I mean the last years of Arden saw the self destruction of the parties middle class support in the 2022 lockdown but in foreign affairs balanced centre policies with the co prosperity and security packed signed with.Japan which combined with the P8 purchase and other treaties amounted to a backdoor reentry into the security pact ANZUS 2 foreshadowed in the 1952 treaty. Hipkins never embraced it it or much else. The Arden govr however misguided and poorly led had 8 or 9 capable ministers.I would be struggling in the current National Cabinet to find any Minister truly loyal to the west and competent

I still don't understand why they don't understand the importance of these ferries to New Zealand, to the economy and to the continuance the current Coalition. Winston has much to gain by holding the line here.
Personally I feel this clapped out old Corolla of a Gov't is something we can't afford at this time and should be sent to the scrapyard in any case.

National got it wrong in cancelling the IRex ferries. The ferry is for most of its history since 1962 the only proftable part of the railways and a couple of. New ferries the only real asset which could in many ways finance rail thru profit, leveraging and even share issues in a 50/50 state private owned railway Now with the lufespan of the last rail ferry and other NZR ferry a car roll and roll ferry which was orginally a 23,000 to cruise linet ( strangely the same size as the IRex cancelled duo. And it had magnificent chandallers whenit first entererd kiwi service.
They used to say that uK RN Colony and Dido class cruisers in sone senses war emergency cruisers, had a strict 20 year lifespan in Atlantic and North Sea use, yes you could sell them to a Latin or Asian nations for a leisurly 35 year life with just the odd gun fight but in RN use all 11 Colonies 😮were struck by age 19 and the Didos 12/13 years , the Royalist and Diiadem were pretty problematic facing missile action at age 21/22 or 27 in the Diadems case Total blackout if the emission of an incoming Styx had bern detected. The deterioration in Royalust from age 19-20 thru age 21 (1964) and 22 (1965) shows just how strict thenlife limit on a ship and its parts and engines.

National and Act don't want the ferries rail enabled because the the railways become less efficient and then therefore unneccessary and can be shut down'

National also wants to send people back in to the office and that’s going to be very inefficient due to time wastage, road congestion, parking and the unnecessary use of fossil fuel.

Why is the O'Brien making it clear that these are consultants?

@@tonywood3660 Consultants were once known as "Civil Servants" ,past governments sold the "we will save you tax by cutting the civil service" bullshit and the tax payer fell for it as they always do. Then they find they need those skills and the people that have them start their own consultancy business and get well paid for their skills. Accountants make the numbers add up so the politicians don't look like dumb forks.
The real dumb forks are the "tax payers" that are too dumb to do the research and learn how this works , they just jump at the feel goods about "less tax" (they never actually see any of it).
I know so many engineers that worked for the Ministry of Works that made a killing after they were laid off.
It happens in the private sector too. I never made so much money as I do now working as a freelance service engineer. Three to four times what I earned as an employee for the very same companies.

Nicola Willis read Charles Dickens "Bleak House" for her English Literature degree and somehow thought she could become Finance Minister of New Zealand.... Well spoken but totally clueless, nothing more than waxing lyrical and flowery phrases.

One day NZ First and Act are going to have a huge public fallout. This government is flying too far right which hasn’t been received well by the general public in the past for National. We also know very well, Winston’s maiden speech back when he bought Jacinda to power regarding asset sales and privatisation. This government will absolutely endeavour to take Winston out in the next election.
