    It's really sad that Disney World would let all these historical and iconic shops, props, and buildings to be hidden and forgotten. It's almost like Disney World intended to hide all your early childhood memories and dreams so that they would rot and fade away permanently.

      +noemistephanie93 Eisner was really good at cutting things to shreds, cut stuff and pocket the short term savings. The animation tour was depressing, watching people working for 5. an hour and no benefits in a glass cage wasn't magical.
      From the outset making Orlando the new Hollywood was a miserable failure, Orlando had none of the amenities readily available in the Los Angeles area, it was culture shock for wealthy people to have to endure the colloquialism of Central Florida.
      I don't really get nostalgic about the parks, maybe I lived in Orlando for too long and know too many backstories. If anything I think this is a good time for the parks, they are going for major overhauls when the last 30 yrs have been slow decay for short term profits at the expense of their audience and their employees.

    • @rc100692
      @rc100692 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Disney has always made changes to their parks. This is Disney's lowest attended park in the U.S., and that's because little has changed. It was built to be a working film studio, but because of lack of interest and high production costs, they stopped using it as actual studios. Most people want a environment that is themed after locations from movies and TV shows, not go to the former studios and see where movies and TV shows were filmed over 20 years ago.

      +Randy ...which is why Universal is so popular.
      And I don't understand why people are sad. They'll still have the memories and the mementos from when they last came, and when all the construction is done, it'll be even better than before. Change is sometimes a good thing.

    • @kingofrapture
      @kingofrapture 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Spencer Valdez But when you change something so unique and interesting just for the sake of marketing to appeal to the unintelligent new generation that could care less about what goes on around them and rather have their eyes glued to their iphones, it makes us older generation people pretty fucking sad. Screw being both educated and entertained, we want the shiny things dancing in front of us! Fuck that noise.

    • @Gee-xb7rt
      @Gee-xb7rt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Spencer Valdez Dinsey is stepping up their game because they are losing to Universal. Disney's business model has been let things decay, which is evident in stuff like this. My dad worked on the original Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, when they changed to Downtown Disney they just threw up some cheap fronts on the old buildings, spend as little as possible to keep the useful innocents spending. People should be outraged that they are spending premium to see stuff thats closed and not even moved, they just stick a wall or curtain in front of it. I all too fondly remember visiting Disney in the 10 yrs that 20000 Leagues sat there abandoned right in the middle of the park.

    • @Gee-xb7rt
      @Gee-xb7rt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Great video Adam. My wife and I were actually on the Disney College program (before we were even dating) beginning in January 1989 so we got to do the Cast preview of The Disney - MGM Studios and Pleasure Island. She is still with the company and has worked at the Studios for over 20 years (at a different park now). This brings back some great memories. Thanks.

    • @Wheeloffortunefan999
      @Wheeloffortunefan999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sincerely hope that you don't mind me asking, (did you actually work at the studios when they opened? if sohow long did you work there for? (there is actually a reason why I am asking which is, I am a sucker for ANY kind of useless trivia especially entertainment related, and I know that they used to have REAL celebrities come in and do guest appearances for quite a few years which is how the handprints in the courtyard of the chinese theatre replica came to be, for those of you who do NOT know, although the chinese theater IS a replica, the handprints themselves are REAL. (I think it was 1 or 2 celebrities a week and they would actually walk around the park so guests could get their autograph and have their pictures taken with them, as well as do a handprint ceremony and star conversation where guests could ask questions of the celebrity.) and the other reason is, do you remember when J.d. roth's handprint ceremony was?

    Wow, that is pretty rough. I always assumed that that stuff was all still there. My parents took me to Disney World and I loved MGM, they were filming Dick Tracy there at the time. The tram ride was the BEST! We got to go through the Alien set, and get kidnapped by cowboys, and who could forget the canyon? They also had an Indiana Jones stunt show that was fun, but the cream for me was getting to walk through Endor, to go on Star Tours, there was lots of Star Wars props hidden all over the place. Sad to know that this is all gone now. Hollywood? Who cares, now MGM Studios, THAT sounds like a fun place to be!

    I worked at WDW in '89 and they used to have Cast Days at MGM to beta test the operation. I remember the sound stage doors. They were little booths and you would go in and sit down wearing a head set. The lights would dim and there was a little sound skit. I remember one was like you were getting a hair cut. The sound was so precise it felt like you were actually at a barber shop and you could swear your hair was being cut. But it was one of those things that you could walk right by and would never know it was there.

    This video is a roller coaster ride of emotion for me. I am remembering things, wishing I remember things, saddened that this is all going, and angry at Disney for ruining everything. I went back in 2002 and it was awesome. For some reason I thought the playground was Bugs life, but now I understand. That giant playdoh can will always be in my memories. The back lot tour was amazing, Catastrophe canyon scared me. Say goodbye to MGM Studios and hello to Star wars and Toy story studios.

    What another great video Mr. The Woo! As a child of the late 80's early 90's myself, I will always refer to this park as MGM Studios. The theming alone made this park my absolute favorite to visit. Even though I was a huge fan of the addition of Star Wars Weekends, it's really sad to see the loss of so many great classic attractions in favor of profitable IP's. This was a much needed stroll down memory lane. It even brought back the memory of the time I was actually chosen to participate in the Backlot Tour special effects pre-show. This video hit me in all the feels and actually brought a few tears to the ole ocular cavities. Thanks Adam, I really needed this.

    I miss the backlot tour so much, such a fun ride. When I was younger I was actually picked to be one of the kids on the giant bumblebee to reshoot the flying bee scene from honey I shrunk the kids. That part of the tour was actually taken out a long time ago. When I was part of it, it was in 1993 I believe and then again in 1996, it was removed shortly after that. Also my mother was picked to be part of the ride "Earthquake". She was picked to be the screaming lady on the escalator lmao it was so funny to see her screaming bloody murder because she really wanted to get into it and make it good. Such great memories to have, I truly miss those days.

    I was never there (I did make it to Universal when I was about 12- early 90's), but I find it very sad and I hate it when things like this change. I guess they feel like they have to keep things fresh or no one would return for a second or third visit, etc. On the other hand though it appears (from this video anyway) that there is a lot of empty space and things just kind of...missing. Why not keep it all (or most) and expand or add when needed? Kids won't know about Roger Rabbit or Honey I Shrunk The Kids if they are not exposed to them. Why are they lesser characters than anything else with 1-2 films? Ok, maybe not everything RR should still be around, but the gift shop/food court wall thing is just dumb. Why remove something like that? I am sure there is plenty of room for shelves of shirts and shit. Great video and very interesting.

    Thank you so much for this warm-and-fuzzies inducing stroll down memory lane!! I feel privileged to have been a guest at Disney-MGM during its first week of operations (I vividly recall watching the opening night festivities on our hotel TV!) My favourite part was the backlot tour so it's a shame they no longer do it. My dad took some extensive video of all the attractions we went on so I will have to dig out that VHS (poor guy having to lug around a huge, rented video camera the whole week we were at Disney...) and relive some of those great times. One of these days I will convert that tape to digital... :-)

      No. It was Min and Bill's Dockside Diner. Min and Bill was an early MGM hit starring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery. Why that movie, of so many in the MGM canon, was chosen for such prominent placement at the Disney-MGM Studios has always been a mystery to me.

    We still call it MGM too. Unfortunately, I'm not as confident about the current imagineers and management to make something as special. My wife and I had fun watching your video. Just one correction, "Splash Mountain" was NOT inspired by the movie "Splash" and has nothing to do with that movie. "Splash Mountain" was inspired and is themed to the movie "Song of the South" and that's where all the characters come from. JUST FYI Nice Video! Thanks!!!! Pllllleeeeesssseeee keep up the good work!

      There's nothing wrong the the Imagineers. They have done an amazing with Shanghai Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea,. The problem is that Disney isn't as willing to invest as much money into the U.S. Parks because they keep having record attendance, so Disney doesn't see the need to make as big of an investment. Also Adam totally knows Splash Mountain isn't themed to Splash, it's one of his favorite rides.

    • @authenticmind

      *****
      The rambling of Michael Eisner isn't really that important, but what I said was the ride was NOT inspired by the movie Splash. It is not! It is inspired by the movie Song Of The South as I said it was. The Characters and the Theme are all from SONG OF THE SOUTH! The original name of the ride was "Zip a Dee River Run." Eisner's suggested name and association is well worth ignoring!

    • @authenticmind
      @authenticmind 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Well I wasn't saying the ride was named after anything, just that it was inspired by Song of the South. What did you think I said? I really have no respect for Eisner or anyone that things he did anything of importance.

      Yeah if they're trying to modernize the parks a bit I think they should use some of their other properties like marvel and their new animated features like wreck it Ralph and all the upcoming new films. Star Wars to me isn't really disney it's kind of creepy seeing the storm troopers March in the parades I don't know it's just weird but that's my opinion.😃😬😂

      +jeebs621 they can't really use marvel yet as Universal studios still has the rights to the theme park theming and rides, they probably will once that contract expires and then marvel in Universal Islands of Adventure will have to be rebranded.

      If I can recall he got banned for life because he filmed in restricted areas that is not open to the public, without permission from Disney. It is most likely when he snuck into Disney's River Country. Someone big wig from the company saw Adam's videos and hence he got banned. He can now go back to Disney World.

    This was a great video with memorable clips added in. The info was great. I grew up with that park since it opened and then worked there for many many years. It holds a special place in my heart and made me tear up when I saw the photos of them tearing down NY street. One thing I want to correct you on is in the Monster Soundstage post show area. They had little booths that you stood at to change your voice with Eddie and Roger, and also Flight of the Navigator. The booths were actually for going in and sitting down, you place a headset on and experience a series of events about going to your office and getting your hair cut. It was foley work at its prime. Made you feel like you were there. Purely audio, no visual. That was the only discrepancy I had. Nicely done!

    You see... this is why I shake my head. Why would they not want to make 100% sure that all of our memories (80's kid talk) were secured for the future generations to see? This is what grinds my gears about great theme parks like this one and Universal Studios... they forget about the grand history that made them to make room for whatever future generations' fad of the time is. I too remember "Catastrophy Canyon" and the tram tour throughout what was a full fledged studio at the time. Thank you for preserving as much of these memories on video as you could here, Adam. This also makes me sad... it is a loss to history. Hopefully they will have a way to store and revisit these memories of yesterday.
