I wish it was a Wii U gamepad. That thing had a DIRECT connection to the console with now pixelations, drops, and latency. This thing has all that so I refunded it lol

It actually is something I really want. Living essentially in two separate places for work and home through the week, attempting to play my ps5 on remote play over iPad wasn’t viable realistically for many of my games. However, this solves my problem. It’s a niche product, and I imagine, given the lifestyle in Japan where people are barely home, it makes more commercial sense there then it does in western countries where we live culturally different lives.
as a father of infants and a husband of a wife who loves reality tv - this is actually high up on my wishlist. They all watch alot of tv, so if i had this - i could casually play games on the sofa while they use the tv (watching rubbish i dont want to watch). not sure its worth the full price though so waiting to find a good value price

I have a Silver PSP 3000 with a custom firmware and it’s awesome. All I have to do is hook it to my computer and I can sideload as many games as will fit on my Memory Stick.
I'm a consider that somewhere on the box it says, in very tiny fine print (something no one ever reads), "requires a PS5 to use." However, you might be on to something, none gamer parents might think it's like a Switch Lite and think "well my kids want a PS5 but i can't afford to shell out over $500 at the moment, but this PS5 Portal is only $200, I'll get them that."

And there's already a remote play app for the PS4 and 5, it felt pretty much useless to release such a thing when you could pretty much replicate it with a regular controller connected to your phone, and your phone connected to the ps5
To be fair this is making the WiiU look good. You get the console and the gamepad with the WiiU. This is a completely separate item to buy in addition to its paired console.

It’s basically a “I want to play ps5 but I don’t want to get out of bed” or My girl wants to wants to hang out and watch her shows and I want to game” device. Honestly since getting it I use it more than just the ps5 alone. Also there are cheaper alternatives but none in this form factor with a dual sense.
You can literally just get on the remote play app from your phone and connect a ps4 or ps5 controller and play from anywhere as long as your PlayStation is on or in rest mode. Save your money!!
Yup! My department hasn’t had any work for the last two months but I still have to come in for some reason.. Been doing exactly what you said every day for the last couple weeks after I remembered that app existed. It works great for games that don’t require very fast reactions. Trying to parry an attack or something like that can be quite difficult.
modding that thing wont give you anything, its a streaming device, that doesnt need decent hardware, a simple 10 year old CPU could handle it, but for proper use of homebrew would be your phone a better option @@miguelon9682
I'm going to guess it was easier to get past regulatory approval by putting in the setting than explaining to governments how dumb it should be to need it for the device, though I guess some fool will pack a PS5 in their carry on with this and a try to find a way to power it at some point.

A PlayStation portal is 200 dollars. You are paying 200 dollars for a wii U gamepad. Save up 100 bucks more and you get a switch or a steam deck lcd. Or pay significantly less for a backbone and use xbox game pass on your phone
It’s like cable tv companies launching streaming apps at first. They required HOME wifi it could detect hotspots and public internet and wouldn’t work with them. Nah. Even hacked, this would be a waste of money. The hardware itself is a complete scam. $20 controller, $10 screen and $5 main board sold for $200. It's not powerful enough to do anything but streaming, so at most hacking it will give you streaming from PC, which you can already do with a phone.
This has very barebones specs and no onboard storage, you'll probably get someone running doom on it on the future but don't expect much more than that

Wii U gamepad had a direct connection the the console giving us a lagless experience. This thru g uses the internet… it was so bad I refunded in a day 😞
Wii U concept was just a big DS. One screen was TV while the other on gamepad. Instead, developers used both screens to show the same image for when the tv was being used.
The 'BackBone One' Controller Peripheral has been Out for a Few Months Now, and does Everything the PS5 Portable can alongside accessing other Game Streaming Services through its Connection to a Mobile Phone - buy That Instead. It's got Variants for the Playstation Store or XBox GamePass, and while Originally being Restricted to Apple iPhones recently got Variants Made to Suit Android Phones...
The portal *is* basically an android tablet. There was a leak where a factory worker showed it running android. So yeah you could hack it and boot up a regular android OS. Idk why you would want to do that though - it's basically a glorified aliexpress tablet in terms of specs. No emulator realistically would work well with it tbh.

Got it on launch day, you really do need lightning fast internet to even try to play it and also the input lag is just something I can’t get around, this will be collecting dust in my closet until they are a niche dead forgotten retro device that will sell double on eBay in 10 years

I got one, then bought a steamdeck oled. Chiaki4deck is better. PS portal is 1080p 60fps & 8" lcd screen, steamdeck is 800p 90fps & 7.4" oled screen. But the steamdeck has no lag. Never had the lcd steamdeck but ever since I got this oled I haven't touched the PS portal.
Could be something they expand on in the future maybe this is the early stages of a portable device but yeah it doesn’t serve much of a purpose for most currently.

It’s basically a “I want to play ps5 but I don’t want to get out of bed” or My girl wants to wants to hang out and watch her shows and I want to game” device.
Honestly since getting it I use it more than just the ps5 alone. Also there are cheaper alternatives but none in this form factor with a dual sense.
You can literally just get on the remote play app from your phone and connect a ps4 or ps5 controller and play from anywhere as long as your PlayStation is on or in rest mode. Save your money!!
Finally someone remembers that app exists
Plus you can get the backbone for 100$ if you fancy some extra mobility and not having a controller to lug around.
Yup! My department hasn’t had any work for the last two months but I still have to come in for some reason.. Been doing exactly what you said every day for the last couple weeks after I remembered that app existed. It works great for games that don’t require very fast reactions. Trying to parry an attack or something like that can be quite difficult.

Don't even need to pay for online services like you do with Playstation. With the portal you need to be connected to your own PS5 on the same WiFi network and can only play your PS games, no access to anything else at all.

Proper handheld systems would be the PSP and PSVita, which are nearly 2 decades old at this point (PSVita is around 12 years old).

You’d connect your Sony Vita to the PS4, and use it as a controller, replicating the whole dual screen setup. Very few games supported it, but yeah, it existed.

It’s like cable tv companies launching streaming apps at first. They required HOME wifi it could detect hotspots and public internet and wouldn’t work with them. The whole idea was if you’re in a house with many kids there won’t be sibling fights over the single tv in the house that was also when flat screens were new tech

Nah. Even hacked, this would be a waste of money. The hardware itself is a complete scam. $20 controller, $10 screen and $5 main board sold for $200.
It's not powerful enough to do anything but streaming, so at most hacking it will give you streaming from PC, which you can already do with a phone.
This has very barebones specs and no onboard storage, you'll probably get someone running doom on it on the future but don't expect much more than that

Wii U concept was just a big DS. One screen was TV while the other on gamepad. Instead, developers used both screens to show the same image for when the tv was being used.

It's got Variants for the Playstation Store or XBox GamePass, and while Originally being Restricted to Apple iPhones recently got Variants Made to Suit Android Phones...

The portal *is* basically an android tablet. There was a leak where a factory worker showed it running android.
So yeah you could hack it and boot up a regular android OS.
Idk why you would want to do that though - it's basically a glorified aliexpress tablet in terms of specs. No emulator realistically would work well with it tbh.

I got one, then bought a steamdeck oled. Chiaki4deck is better. PS portal is 1080p 60fps & 8" lcd screen, steamdeck is 800p 90fps & 7.4" oled screen. But the steamdeck has no lag. Never had the lcd steamdeck but ever since I got this oled I haven't touched the PS portal.
I'm still hoping they're just testing the waters for a new complete handheld
