    A great hour not wasted. It was a real treat to see two of my favorite TH-camrs discussing the removal of the Golden Ray. I've been enjoying the videos since they began and really appreciate Capt. Sal doing the in-person interview with Capt. Andy.

    I’m in awe of both of you Sal. Thank you for creating this interview and allowing the masses to really see what’s going on in specific areas of our country involving maritime issues . I had no idea this occurred and how would I since it was not on mainstream news. How disappointing! Thanks again for being the agent of change Sal and introducing us to another individual who as you shared has a depth of knowledge in a specific subject matter . 👏🏽

    Excellent interview with Andy. I really enjoyed listening to you guys talking about the salvage. Sal you asked great questions. I feel like I got to know Andy more. It still amazes me how they ripped sections off a ship. I appreciate you both sharing shipping things. Andy sure has spent many hours out on the Minorcan Mullet. Great job to both of you!⚓

    It’s been a pleasure to get the blow-by-blow view of the salvage of MV Golden Ray by Captain Andy plus your own comments on the wreck, incident response and the finding / lack thereof by the NTSB.
    PS - What an intelligent conversation on this event.

    Andy's videos are really first class. He has done amazing work. I'm not one who believes in the idea that trying to right the vessel and floating it off would have been practical. The ship was a huge mess because all the cargo had shifted. No matter what, they eventually would have needed to cut it up somewhere, and it would have been a very long difficult tow. There was no saving the cargo. It could have tipped over again out at sea. Trying to pump is out would have been extremely difficult. because of all the debris inside. If anything they should have had a better plan to empty the fuel tanks of the ship. Cars that are being shipped have minimal gas inside. I'm not sure about the motor oil in all the engines.

    Marvelous, marvelous video! Captain Andy does a great interview. You did a great job leading the interview. Andy has always been the iconic Southern Gentleman in his discussions about the crews. Many times when I thought the situation deserved a serious dressing down for the decisions made by the leadership in this salvage, Captain Andy was always very polite and supportive of the people working. The crews were told to do it this way. Much of the mess was not their fault. Thanks.
    The idea of the city selling clean potable water to the ships for ballast is interesting. I would have thought that the fire hydrants on the port docks were nothing more than a pipe elbow to the port water. That is what many of the rural farm ponds are for fire fighting. Now I have to consider the cost to the water supply of tens of thousands of gallons of treated water being sold to the ships and lost to the people of Brunswick and dumped in the ocean. Interesting idea. What would the very long term costs be? More expensive infrastructure for pumping and cleaning water? Lowered water tables? Less water available to protect the area from a conflagration?

    A fabulous worthwhile hour. I was already into Captian Andy when the Ever Given blocked the Suez Canal. I had considerable interest as a retired naval architect and found about the daily gCaptain newsletter and that led me to Prof. Sal's "What the s***" channel.
    From an NA standpoint, vehicles have a cargo density close to ping pong balls and designers have serious challenges combating storms and potential flooding casualties with virtually no longitudinal or transverse subdivision on the vehicle decks. Following operational rules is CRITACLE and Sal's treatment of the grossly negligent first mate (escaping to Korea) was right on. I forecast endless litigation.

    Hey Sal & Andy !!! What happened to the ""GOLDEN RAY"" was a throwback to the old movie -Poseidon Adventure - !! Corporate $$$$$ VS Safe Passage of the ship !!! The price so far has gone well over $$ 2 Billion & still climbing with the Environmental cleanup not to mention that there are MANATEES in the river system there too !! Can well understand the frustration of Andy & the residents living in the area for the WRONG that was done to get the ""WRECK "" out of there !! CONGARTS to Andy for his time & Concerns on this matter !!

    Just a theory, but it sounds like the Sunday night quarterback got it right. As the MM noted, that port needs clean sea water on tap to balast the car carriers, not muddy river water. That probably applies to all car carrier ports.

  • @leechowning2712
    @leechowning2712 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't see this asked very often, but the ship had flushed ballast to be shallow enough to enter the harbor. Is it possible that the ship left harbor light on ballast to clear the same shallows?
    Also, you commented on cutting through all the fuel lines, the tanks and such. Why weren't those drained beforehand? I know we have used this before, and that the CG on the East Coast have experience with the system since they use it against ships sunk in WW2.

    • @wgowshipping
      @wgowshipping  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a video that breaks down the NTSB report. They ended up loading more cargo than they took off, but it caused them to be less stable since they did not load ballast in port. They would have to run it through their ballast treatment plant.
      They did attempt to drain all the fuel, but it is an impossible feat.

    Love both of your channels. Dumb question, how did they get the anchor cutting chain underneath the ship since it was laying on the ground?

    • @wgowshipping
      @wgowshipping  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They go under the vessel with probes and pull the chain through. The bottom is real soft silt.

    amazing having big cranes on two barges able to lift that amount of weight! Also one more step in my knowledge looking up what it meant to put the rudder amidships. So chains can cut things huh? (like pipes carrying oil on the ocean floor I reckon) Also hindsight may help in future salvage operations. Looks like hard turns in channels need attention in future as well, maybe tugs can be of more use in keeping ships safe in making hard turns in channels.

    Does the fragility of the roro construction affect the feasibility of unrolling the vessel, or the shalowness preclude installing a platform below the vessel? From the Costa Concordia diagram, the bottom seemed to have a more optimal gradient.

    I think besides the chemical & oil contamination the biggest impact to the local wildlife will be the effects of plastics degrading over time into microplastics.

  • @RollinShultz

    Knowing the powerful forces that can be brought to bear with air pressure, I would have wanted to try using a couple of the bladders China uses to transport water from the U.S. Great Lakes. They are huge and pressurizing them with air would create a lot of leverage. Anything BUT cutting them into pieces. I have run across many engineers who couldn't engineer their way out of a paper bag. This case sounds like a good example of poor so-called experts at the top of the decision making process.

    These two guys are "has beens" who are trying to become relevant through youtube. I first found them because of the Dali collision in Baltimore and now they are coming up in my youtube feed. In their Dali collision coverage their speculation was proven to be off target time and time again. They mistated facts over and over. Their coverage of the event was narrow focused and I found other coverage to be more complete.
    I didnt watch their coverage of this car carrier event but I suspect the same poor coverage.
